Easiest? That's hard, the early games aren't hard at all, but I have been playing Super Mario 3D World on WiiU and it's easy as fuck, is it the easiest? Nope but if I had to choose a current Mario(after 64), it would be this.

Hardest? To me that would be Sunshine

Pre-64 the easiest is Super Mario World
and the Hardest is The Lost Levels.

Theres literally only 3 shines where chucksters are obligatory, and only 2 of them have scenarios in which a chuckster can kill you. And even then, its easy to learn where a chuckster will throw you.

Lost Levels is almost certainly the hardest but it's literally just designed to be hard.

I consider Sunshine the hardest simply because the controls were so shit they made everything awkward as fuck to handle. It's why I consider Sunshine the worst in the series. The Mario series is renowned for how wonderful Mario controls yet in Sunshine he controls like absolute shit.
