Endless budget and no oversight. FFXII failed because the management was forcing them to change too much. When that created a backlash, they took a hands off approach to FFXIII. This created a similar mess, but all the execs cared about was sales. And the sales were good. So they continued the hands off approach for FF Type-0 and FFXIII Versus (aka FFXV). The development for the latter was reset three times and dragged on for 9 years. Hell, its still not technically a finished game.

The type of storytelling found in classic "golden age" FF doesn't really exist in popular media these days. Even if SE manage to somehow squeeze out a decent game for FFXVI(or whatever) it'll still be different. And they're too pussy to buck trends as XV demonstrates(though in their defense, this is pretty much every AAA studio these days).

Crystal Tools is a godawful engine that they wasted years of time and millions of dollars on.

They also announced Agito XIII and Versus XIII long, long before they'd ever be coming out, to the point that they both ended up being rebranded as something else entirely. (Type-0 and XV)

Crystal Tools also ruined XIV to the point that they ended up needing to remove it and rebuild the game from the ground up for ARR.

The gameplay and graphics for these games might be fine in themselves, but I feel like the team forgot about what made Final Fantasy ever good.

Interesting and coherent plots, likable heroes with clear goals, side characters that develop alongside that hero, amazing worlds you want to explore, and all of that set to a memorable soundtrack. That is what Final Fantasy is. And thats what the newer games seem to lack. A basic reason to care about anything happening.

Like nowhere in the actual games is it stated that Bhunivelze killed his mother, Mwynn so he could be the one true god but then she became lord of the underworld (unseen realm). Bhunivelze then creaed Lindzei, Pulse and Etro to find the gate to the unseen realm so he could destroy Mwynn before some kind of macbeth prophecy of him getting killed, before fucking off until they accomplished their mission. He also got pissed at Etro for looking like his mom so he gave her no powers

There's so much actual lore in 13 that isn't actually stated in the games its ridiculous

There was actually some anon who compiled an image/pastebin/something about this because they were interested in what the fuck happened. Long story short: trying to make a multipurpose engine while making the games at the same time, leading to teams getting shuffled around to try and deal with all the work that began piling up and the engine not being able to accommodate everything they wanted it to.

LR and Type-0 are both some of the greatest FF titles. 13 and 15 are okay.

Final Fantasy 14. FF11 was their biggest money maker and they really needed FF14 to be a success to replace it so when it was a complete failure they had to put as much man power into fixing it as possible resulting in a lot of projects beibng cancelled, delayed or changed.
If you look into it there was quite a few Ivalice Alliance games that were cancelled around that time and it was around then that they really started churning out all those remakes and ports
