Chibi unironically fits the old FF battles of the tiny character sprites vs the huge and complex looking monster sprites. It was just the next step, now they just need to remake the old games using this style.

It looks like such a cute and funny game. It actually make me binge-watch all the cutscenes I could get my hands on on Youtube. They're great and have pretty good voice acting.

It's turn based like the older FF games. And you can catch monsters and "evolve" them etc to use in your party. It's actually a neat little system once you get your head around it. A great OST too.

It was FF Fanservice but had enough personality to stand on its own even if you don't really care for the franchise, just how it should be. I didn't really care for any of the cameos but still enjoyed it for its art direction and writing.

That gap between appearing seemingly innocent but having themes that would make parents look twice if they caught their kids playing it is an appeal in its own right.
It's similar to how a lot of anime and manga that looks all cutesy is actually quite dark, there's a pretty big demographic for that sort of thing.
WoFF in particular doesn't really make it's dark nature all that apparent and if you are just a little kid you probably wouldn't really pick up on it all that much, but at the same time if you are a teen or grown ass man you can appreciate those themes and the depth they add
