How is it overlooked? It's regarded as a classic among all JRPG fans. And EB is even better.

Absolutely fantastic game. Really unique story concept that sucks you in pretty much immediately, and the rumour system is such a cool mechanic. Easily my favourite Persona game

Eternal Punishment is a sequel actually. You can technically play it without playing Innocent Sin, but I'd definitely recommend playing Innocent Sin first.

No, BoFIV has a fucking fantastic story. It has flaws but story is not one of them. It's strengths are it's great battle system, amazing art, interesting story, and unique atmosphere as the world of BoFIV has a more Asian influence. The only real flaws I would give are it's too easy until the last stretch and near the end there is some pretty bullshit padding but it is so worth it. I played it only this year and I haven't loved a game as much in years. It is seriously one of my favorite games ever made. Upon beating it I was even debating playing it again. I was debating playing a fucking jrpg right after beating it, I loved it that much.

Fou Lu is by far the most developed but the main cast has their fair share of moments. If you don't think Cray had development then I think we may have played different games. Is it the deepest writing? No, I give you that, but to say none is I feel a little extreme.

It gets overlooked for being a Zeldaclone, which is sad because it approaches absolute perfection in that genre. The gameplay is simple and the dungeon's have just the right amount of difficulty. It also has loads of great memorable locations and characters. It out-Zeldas Zelda.

>>379669371
Best characters/world of any JRPG, definitely. The localisation took liberties but it was funny, especially at the time. The difficulty level is great for a JRPG and the sense of being on a real adventure is there, similar to Grandia. Great anime cutscenes which brnig the characters to life, characters that are so well-written that their relationships seem real. Amazing game.

Really? The build up is great but as a story I find it a bit lacking compared to say, II or IV. The idea of Myria was really cool as she isn't pure evil ans seems somewhat reasonable but it never really goes anywhere or makes you question if she might be right. It's a great game but III's story is pretty underwhelming.

>>
>>379674590
I wouldn't call it a 10/10, it had lots of problems, but it was easily one of the best JRPGs on the Wii.
Also gets an honorable mention for having one of the best looking overworlds of all time

>>379675604
The dub is completely atrocious and it doesn't let you switch. I guess you could see if there's an undub if you emulate it or have a hacked Wii
>>
>>379677061
I wouldn't call it tedious, just very challenging at some points. It's definitely worth playing, and don't use a guide. Also that UH

>>
>>379677061

The puzzles are definitely where the meat of the game is but I enjoyed them. You can always use a FAQ and just play it as a pretty good Zelda-like.
>>
>>379677061
When I was a kid the puzzles really pissed me off and I could never figure them out without a guide. As an adult they're a little easier but some will still activate your almonds for a bit (pushing the pillars around on ice comes to mind). Definitely a lot harder puzzle wise than Zelda.

>>
>>379677061
I wouldn't call it tedious. Maybe a few of the puzzles could be if you just can't figure them out and have to try and bruteforce shit, but generally speaking it really isn't.
It honestly isn't all that similar to Zelda though, aside from being a top down adventure game with a metroidvania esque item system. It's very story and character focused. The dungeons are much more puzzle based than any Zelda too, not to say it doesn't have any action or bad combat (it's actually really good and feels very satisfying) but that's more kept for the boss battles.

All the games Working Design brought over are 10/10, honestly.
You could tell they absolutely loved JRPGs and were dedicated as fuck, even stuff that's mostly redundant like the manuals had an absurd amount of effort and love put into them. You just don't really have companies like that anymore. XSEED is probably the closest I can think of and even they don't even remotely approach that level

I'm not an emulator bro so I'm really not an expert. I've seen good stuff about Abyss's emulation in threads and it's only a ps2 game so getting that shit in HD and even throwing jap language on top is doable if that's your thing.

Vesperia is 360 but really PS3 so I assume out of the question. I put Symphonia down a fair bit but it's clearly popular and on the Gamecube so it's also doable. Those are kind of the 3 "golden era" games of the series that all share the same general DNA.

If you wanna get crazy jump in Destiny Directors Cut

People generally say Abyss or Vesperia are the best 3D Tales games.
I'd really recommend Eternia though. The 2D games other than Phantasia get barely any love and it's easily the best out of the whole bunch in my opinion. It's on PSOne and got an enhanced port for the PSP, both very easy to emulate.

This was a great, but very flawed game, in that battle took too damn long. It's like watching an FF summon for one attack round. I literally played this game multi-tasking. DNA digivolving was pretty harsh on leveling later when it became a huge grind, which exacerbates the first issue. I'm pissed that the Digi-beetle tanks have yet to be revisited. Upgrading them and navigating the dungeon traps was fun. Still has the best opening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bMA1PgxFzg

Mana Khemia is Harry Potter the anime: the game and it's just a generic Gust game. If you like Ar Tonelica you might be able to stomach it, but the story doesn't really go anywhere and the characters are pretty bland. Music is good. Haven't played the second one.

The thing is WD brought over a lot of stuff that would have otherwise been left in Japan, why they're really remembered. Still though, they did some dumb shit in thier localizations. They always made the games more difficult and would work pop culture refrences in for the sake of it. Nearly none of the jokes in lunar for example are in the original, the dragon poop one is though. While they're admirable for bringing over niche stuff they are pretty bad at actually localizing stuff.

I enjoy wild arms on the micro level more than the macro. It's the little things about the game like the fact you can name spells and the opening being so good really elevate the game for me. Even though it's cheating I love the glitch to dupe items.

It's got some problems with translation but so does pretty much every ps1 jrpg and some of the optional bosses can be shit to get to. Overall it's my favorite "underrated" jrpg including Dragon Quest 6.

Lunar 1 has a super nostalgic feeling to it, more so than 2 does, it's a really down to earth, simple game about grand adventure, and some people prefer it because of that.

No. It's not bad, but it in no way a better Zelda than Zelda like >>379676749 is saying. The one thing it does better is that it has a handful of fairly elaborate logic puzzles that can be quite perplexing.

Aside from that, it does not offer the kinds of quests and exploration that Zelda to any where near the same extent and is largely a huge slog through piles of dungeons after dungeon. If you like that kind of thing you'll enjoy it, but if you like Zelda for everything else it does you'll find it a disappointment.
>>
>>379682097
It has better combat, better designed and more interesting dungeons, better bosses, better puzzles, actual characters with actual development, and an actual story. A lot of people would say it looks nicer than any 2D Zelda too.

The music and graphics are good, but they re-translated it and re-recorded the dialogue/music with new voices and lyrics.

They also kind of dumbed the game down by introducing these weird limit break attacks for every character, and I found it incredibly frustrating that it had consistently slow loading times, and music would stop/start over every time you enter a new room or building.
>>
>>379682445

What game are you comparing it to, because if you compare it to the LTTP-style games, which are the only ones that really makes sense at all, I don't see how Alundra loses out in terms of exploration and side quests.

>if you like Zelda for everything else
Like what? The jingles and puzzle solved sounds?

Alundra and for example LTTP have very different atmospheres, the basic gameplay mechanics aside they are almost entirely different games, liking one over the other is perfectly fine without trying to rationalize it because of that. But fundamentally I do think Alundra does everything except being a light hearted adventure game either on a similar level or better.

Honestly the Wild West setting was almost nonexistent in that, you had like a handful of towns that it was prominent in, but then very quickly you start only really moving around in fortified castles, magical ruins, and eldritch horror dimensions. I'll give you that. Only a few are any good, but Zelda bosses are typically atrocious so Alundra wins.

>actual characters with actual development, and an actual story

This is actually one of the biggest problems I had with the game. Due to what happens, the story events actively impinge upon your ability to interact with NPCs in any meaningful way outside of those major scripted events, for reasons that should be clear to you if you've completed it. I honestly found it difficult to continue to give a shit about them when I realized the direction the game was going in. On top of this, this also outright blocks you from being about to return to half of the game's dungeons.

If we look at what Alundra does with its NPCs can you honestly say it compare favorably to MM or even WW in its ambitions and what storytelling it accomplishes?

I mean, I know I'm going to get sperged at by nostalgia for this, but not really. Maybe like 10 out of the 3 dozen or so are top tier games, ignoring the ridiculous "10/10" meme.

I loved WD as much as anyone back in the day, but too much nostalgia isn't good for you. Mine settled down when I swallowed the hard pill that their localizations weren't actually good, it's just that they were less awful than most of the competition at the time. And they were competing against English localizations done by Jap teams, or even machine translations. They're a relic of a bygone era.

As bad as most of the localizations of the time are I would never say WD's localizations are good or better than the competition, the only acceptable work they did was the Arc the Lad trilogy and even that is spotty as fuck, but sure as hell better than all the garbage they did to other games.

That's a valid stance too, Anon. The games with proper fan retranslations are vastly more enjoyable when played that way. I don't like the changes WD made either. To be fair, the game does rather explicitly expect you to turn off random encounters for those parts, to minimize the "doing" of content you've already done before at that point.

Not to mention, considering how different the fights you "repeat" are, it's quite a mental leap to call them simply repeating content at that point.

Red, Blue, or Emilia

Once you have (at least one of) those down and you're more comfortable with the game's systems, quirks and general weirdness, try for some of the less-straight-forward characters, such as Asellus, T260 and Riki.

Probably a good idea to save Lute for last, or at least for once you're very comfortable with the game and its systems. His scenario is pretty much intro -> the entire world opens up for you to do whatever you want -> final dungeon. It's very easy to fuck yourself over if you aren't familiar with the game.

Most of these aren't overlooked. Also, I'm noticing a vast majority of jrpgs listed here are PS1 and PS2. Didn't anyone here play rpgs from the 3rd and 4th gen? Or were most of you not even born at the time?
>>
>>379715974
PS1 and PS2 were the height of JRPGs. There simply weren't that many amazing ones before or after those eras, so it makes perfect sense they get the most posts.
>>
>>379715709
>How the fuck can you write anything compelling when the events within are allowed to take place in any order?
That's not really what non linearity entails.
How can you not anyway?
If anything non linearity allows more depth to writing since you can make actors behave differently according to the player's behaviour, that also helps shaping the story differently, giving you more reasons to experiment with the game while also allowing the player to see the consequences of his personal actions, making it far more involving that a linear game where you have no agency or freedom of choice.
Non linearity is always the better choice in both gameplay and narrative, problem is it takes much more effort to make it decent so many people don't even try, and most players won't rub two neurons together to make sense of it all.
>>
>>379716161

There were plenty of great rpgs back then. PS1 and PS2 rpgs are good, but being the height of rpgs is a matter of personal preference, most likely affected by age.

Because the events need to be written in such a way that they have no consequences on each other, since they can be tackled in any order.
>If anything non linearity allows more depth to writing since you can make actors behave differently according to the player's behaviour
This has nothing to do with linearity. You can have choices in a linear game, see literally any VN with choices.

I think you're mistaking "multiple paths" with "non-linear". A game can have multiple paths and still be entirely linear, again, VNs are an extreme yet apt example.

This, there are so many good jrpgs on that console alone. I
>>
>>379715974
>I'm noticing a vast majority of jrpgs listed here are PS1 and PS2.
PS1 and PS2 had a bigger abundance of RPGs than older consoles, especially PS1, since FFVII streamlined the genre, not to mention that the OP said to post RPGs that are both 10/10s and overlooked, so of course the consoles with more RPGs are going to have many more overlooked games to post than the consoles with less RPGs.
Though you're right about most of these not actually being overlooked.

Even looking at non enix/square games.
>earthbound
>metal max series
>SMT series
>breath of fire series
Yeah, FF clones for sure. And even then stuff like SaGa and live a live proved those companies were willing to experiment.
>>379717461
Weird. I use my psp as it can run ps1 natively. Some games have problems but basically every jrpg worth playing runs great on it. Maybe try that if you have one, its worth it.

>>379717947
And? None of those are 10/10 games

PS2 > SNES > PS3 > PS1 when it comes to JRPGs. Most of the PS1 ones aged terribly.

Well, I can agree with you on PS1 rpgs aging badly. I can't play them anymore.

>Because the events need to be written in such a way that they have no consequences on each other, since they can be tackled in any order.
That's not true at all, games like Zill O'll, Brigandine, Gunparade March or many SaGa games all have non linear events that change dinamically depending on how you progress through the game, Zill O'll is especially good at that, possibly the best game I've played when it comes to that, and it has a fuckhuge cast too.

Or you can do a game like Metal Max which allows you to tackle the game's content in almost any order you want and freely skip anything but a few key quests since they are all self contained but also part of the general narrative.

What you want is a strong main quest, and that's alright, but not everyone likes to be put on rails on a main quest they might or might not give a shit about, and when said quest is still the same no matter how many times you play through the game it becomes clearly inferior to a game which gives you the choice to get off the rails.
>A game can have multiple paths and still be entirely linear
A game with multiple paths is, by definition, non linear.

I'm probably one of the like 5 people on here that actually played Zill O'll and I can assure you it was atrocious. Well, I played Infinite, but same shit

What was atrocious except the graphics?

Never owned a GBA. Did it have any games other than Pokemon and Golden Sun? And if we're including portable consoles then Vita is the perfect JRPG machine with original DS being a close second.

I'm still mad that Sony rejected the idea of releasing the PSP remake of this and the sequel in the US.

Well it had 6 Battle Network games
Some ports/remakes, like Tales of Phantasia or Shining Force...
There is Demikids (from Megami Tensei series)
Summon Knight Swordcraft Story
Mother 3
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Sword of Mana
Medabots
Harry Potter Prisoner of Azkaban
One of Shaman King games
Robopon

GBA has a surprizingly good amount of solid RPGs

Will not fight you, memories were had, became my all time fave RPG for a while and the best GBA imo.

>Agile combat
>Sick music
>Good story
>Excelent graphics, specially the summons
>Characters were alright
>Cute girls, Mia I love you so much
>Nice puzzles and good use of mechanics, felt Zelda-like in many ways

My only problem was probably the encounter rate when you wanted to solve some puzzles and Kraden talked too fucking much.
>>
>>379719385
And what's that supposed to prove?
You do know that your idea of nonlinearity doesn't actually exist outside of some rare game like Dwarf Fortress?
Every RPG uses a route system of sorts that ends with one or more possible ends, that doesn't make it linear, by your own weird idea no RPG is non linear.
>>
>>379720315
>You do know that your idea of nonlinearity doesn't actually exist outside of some rare game like Dwarf Fortress?
Yes, I do know that. That's why complaining about linearity in games, especially those designed to tell a story (which is inherently linear) is fucking stupid. That's why I'm arguing in the first place.

Look, you evidently don't understand nor care what I'm talking about, let's leave it at that.

Using your own distorted definitions to prove a ridiculous point is enough of a sign that discussion is pointless, you're arguing about nothing because you do not even acknowledge the existence of non linearity in videogames and how that applies to storytelling, I don't know, and at this point nor care about why you do this, but you're wrong and there's plenty of games out there to prove you wrong.

ps2 was a dark time for JRPGs
>>
>>379721070
>I don't know what linear means
>therefore your definitions are distorted
A sequence of events is linear. Non-linear is non-sequential. Introduction -> Conflict -> Resolution is linear, a sequence. Having multiple choices of what that conflict and resolution are doesn't change the fact that it's a sequence of events.
>>
>>379720891

I'm jelly as fuck, how is SaGa 2?

Never played it because the music wasn't like the one in the other SaGa games, the art direction and graphics look amazing, though.
>>
>>379721617
It's actually pretty divisive. While the battle system is typical SaGa (minus the tactical segments) It's free-roam system is replaced with a more focused, linear but branching plot over generations. It undeniably has great spritework.
>>
>>379721316
>Having multiple choices of what that conflict and resolution are doesn't change the fact that it's a sequence of events.
Yes it does, a basic narrative structure doesn't infringes non linearity, because I actually have options that lead to different outcomes.
Again, by your own idea no game ever is non linear, not even dwarf fortress, and that's absolutely laughable.
>>379721617
Not him but, Frontier 2 is cool, it's very different from other games in the series since it goes back to a linear format like the GB games, albeit giving you the order of playing through events out of chronological order, the gameplay is also slightly different from Frontier since there's no different races, it polishes Frontier's basic gameplay a lot though, adding things like cross combos, duel mode, channelling etc.
The music is also really good even though it's not Ito, you're seriously missing out on some of Hamauzu's very best.
>>
>>379722468
If you have nothing else to say other than repeating yourself, why even bother responding? I already told you I know that no (or hardly any) game is non-linear. And I even told you why, because stories are inherently linear, they need consequence.
>>
>overlooked titles
>enter the thread
>none of the are actually overlooked

ok
>>
>>379723094
There are actually some posts with overlooked games
It's just that those posts are... overlooked.
>>
Lunar is the very definition of "babby's first JRPG." If you've played even a handful of other JRPGs released in the past two decades, chances are most of them were better than Lunar. The awful Working Designs translation certainly doesn't help the game.
>>
>>379722863
>If you have nothing else to say other than repeating yourself, why even bother responding?
Because you have a really distorted ideas of narrative structures and gameplay, but I guess you don't really care about reasoning and just want to win an argument on the internet no matter what.
>because stories are inherently linear, they need consequence.
Again, that has nothing to do with non linearity in videogames, and I hope you someday realize this.

I remember this part stonewalled me when I was a kid and had it on rental from Blockbuster. Bought a copy later on (ironically from the same Blockbuster several years later) and got through it. What I liked most about BOF3 when compared to 4 was the environment. It was very unique and very... adventurous. The scenarios, the comedy, the mini-games, all of it was great. I also liked the fishing system more and the fairy village more.
