I personally don't like sims, I like the arcadey fun of the Ace Combat games and the atmosphere the games have. The radio chatter is so good. In most games if the enemy is like "wow it's the squad of badasses we're fucked" I roll my eyes but in AC it gets me all amped up. Couple that with the amazing music and you just feel so fucking cool gunning down dozens of enemy planes like it's nothing.

nah b, deadass thought assault horizon was the best game.

dfm was a bit broken (way to scripted in many instances), but it was a path in the right direction. instead of mastering it, they chickened out and reverted back to destroying your targets from distances you can barely see them. lock. shoot. repeat. boring.

plus the addition of attack heli missions, which were really well done, was a great addition to the series.

No I mean their choice of the word remorsefully. It doesn't fit at all. She's having a cry at how bad the Oseans are but at the same time she's saying that they were remorseful in their killing of civilians.

it was a path in the right direction. the unique game mechanic in ac:ah was in the right direction, but they never mastered it. they should have doubled down and mastered it with ac7.

developing a GOOD game was pretty easy for the PS2. there's a reason why we got GTA games every 1-2 years on the PS2 while know it takes a good 4-6 years to get a new GTA game.

Ace Combat is doomed to fail unless if they go past their PS2 mechanics with current gen graphics.

QTEs and on-rails tailing do not evolve a series, much less chopper missions that devolve into mission-long turret sections. A japanese developer should not make a game to cater to western, modern FPS binging audiences, as such titles will never attract them in any sort of long-term sense whatsoever and they'd go back to their CoD eventually.

>>379672767
the on-rails sucked. but it was a path in the right direction. ace combat needs to be closer and personal, but they need to master the mechanic to make it so that you're still in control of the jet. ac:ah was the first ac where the machine gun was actually used, and useful.

and the attack helicopter missions were great. they didn't have none of that meme on-rails mechanic either. the bomber missions and ac-130 missions were also a breath of fresh air.

The gameplay of Ace Combat is not tied to the hardware the game is built on. I referenced PS1 because the series started there and all the features in the PS2 games are also available on PS1 ace combats, even missile cam/ tracking.
There's an Ace Combat on the GBA and 3DS to show how the hardware is not a factor for the series and it can either be really good or bad.

>I referenced PS1 because the series started there and all the features in the PS2 games are also available on PS1 ace combats

Exactly. Get a guy to play AC2 and AC6 and they'll be playing the exact same thing minus the better graphics.

none of the features I want are current gen... the features I want were mostly introduced with assault horizon.

literally the only issue with assault horizon was how on-rails the dogfight mode was. but the closer and detailed destruction present in assault horizon created a new level of immersion not present in any game.

the new ground attack feature in assault horizon actually made ground attack enjoyable instead of the dull and boring thing it was in any other AC game.

the helicopter missions were great and unique.

the bomber missions were great and unique.

the side gunner missions could be boring, but they were still solid (not overdone and it was only one mission not including the prequel mission)

Hawx was actually kind of boring. I don't even know why but both games were hard to play through. It was even worse than Assault Horizon. That's saying something.

On the other hand. I think the most boring Ace Combat was Joint Assault. For some reason the game feel wasn't as good as the numbered games or Ace Combat X, the predecessor.

Both Hawx series and Joint Assault both took place in the real world. Assault Horizon too.
This made it generic to me, with the inclusion of stereotypical russian bad guys with strange accents and names to complete it.
Maybe the reason these arcade flight sims are good is because of the unique worlds, and music, and they get boring when they move the setting to the real world.

For Assault Horizon, the only mission I truly felt was revolutionary for Ace Combat was the one where you get to pilot a strategic bomber for only bombing purposes. And that puts it above Hawx and Joint Assault for me. Joint Assault has a 747 though. But that was anything but a fun run.
>>
>>379674706

I can quote pretty much all the dialogue from that mission. The Yellows Squadron panicking on seeing a full Mobius Squadron, the commandos becoming more and more desperate as the mission goes on, their leader's unwavering faith that Mobius 1 will destroy the generators in time, it's all insanely memorable.

>literally keeping the exact same mechanics is one way to slowly kill off your fanbase and kill the series.
Which is honestly strange considering that the mechanics in AC: AH was what put people off the game, because it changed the way it played along with changing the setting.

Personally after playing the games countless time I gotta say they still hold up today because they don't have some weird control scheme, you just have your aeroplane, and you dodge missiles and shoot things, sometimes less is more and it's hard to fuck that up and it's simplicity adds to its longevity as a whole which is why it's pretty easy to pick up and just play.

As far as predicting how people will react to the game as if the mechanics are going to make or break it is a huge thing to say considering we know little about how it plays other than assuming it's just the same thing. maybe we get better wingmen controls and better wingmen AI. honestly, there could also be air strategy tied in with these commands. comparatively, you're asking to change how a movement scheme works because you're sick of walking, taking cover and killing dudes.

there's not much you can ultimately do in a game like this other than add in weird drifting like hawks, or some weird air jump feature without taking away agency from the player and we found that isn't a great way to do aircraft games with AH because even if you're just locking on to an enemy from a distance and killing them or you know where they spawn and they'd otherwise be a hard kill it's still you making conscious decisions bout taking them down.

Frankly claiming that people won't play it because it's the same thing is a silly statement because honestly, that's all a lot of ace combat fans have wanted for the past 10 years, just an arcade flight game set in their favorite not-earth of choice with great characters and neat boss fights.

bpck one.

plus packaging literal old games and selling them as new isn't the same thing as developing a brand new game with the quality of a ps2 era game.

people buy remastered or repackaged games knowing those games are actually old... most people buy them to relive the experience they had 10 years ago. people who buy them to play them for the first time know they are getting a game developed a decade ago, and there's nothing wrong with that. but no one would buy an actually new game if it had the quality of 10 years ago.

you'd be lying to yourself if you say you wouldn't be extremely annoyed if ac7 had ps2 era quality.

So, speculah on the themes of AC7:

'War is bad': Duh, it's Ace Combat. People are going to mope about senseless killing and in the end everybody got played by the Belkans again.

'One last hurrah': The human fighter pilots are going to defy the odds for one last time and defeat the next generation of supposedly invincible drone/AI operated fighters.

Skies Unknown is clearly a title with a double meaning. It probably references both space and the idea of planes without pilots meaning you'll never know the sky again. Plus the statement about the color of the sky can probably be an allusion to the blackness of space.

The Starfighter is an odd choice of planes though unless they're going to have the super plane of AC7 be Starfighter II redesigned to look like the usual super plane style.

I feel like this is a result of AH being released during a time that video games are a lot more visible in the public eye and also being marketed as a call of duty style game. ace combat is, after all, a Japanese series and I speculate the scope of knowledge on these games were pretty small when magazines were the way of knowing about games and not the internet.

Video games go through trends and assault horison is a game that exemplifies the notion of copying what's popular or cashing in on a trend.

There's no such thing as "quality of 10 years ago". old mario games are still some of the top platformers. Doom is still one of the best fps games. Baldurs gate 2 is still one of the best RPGs of all time. Even in terms of shitty games, the people that actually like, say halo games, will say halo 3 or ODST are the best games.

You can just file all those opinions to nostalgia m8. People are replaying those classics all the time. Some poeple who play doom for the first time these days weren't even born when Doom came out. That game is 24 years old (according to wikipedia). It's still fucking great.

Most western trailers look like shit. They have shit directors who don't know what they're doing. 30fps is a sort of compensation measure I'd assume.

Japanese games also tend to actually run at 60fps even on consoles which a lot of western games don't even try to achieve.

It was decent at best yes. But its not ace combat. Happy to know that the late Tom Clancy was a fan of Ace Combat seeing as he had two made under his name. It had some weird mission where if you didn't follow the exact flight path you had to do it again, just to advance a mission.

that's not exactly a great comparison there, I mean a thing you could pass off as a small change is the addition and then detraction of the [YES><NO] from ace combat 5 which I personally enjoyed to a great extent, that was a great little conversational mechanic that I was devastated to find didn't exist in zero, however it's not needed in zero, that's not the point though, the point is that that small mechanic made me feel like I had even a semblance of agency in the conversations which was a nice addition to the games heavy dialogue and while it might just be as small as a button press its impact is not meaningless and it's something that in a vacuum could easily be misconstrued as a meaningless mechanic that changes nothing.

>Core Gameplay Changes
Honestly, you need to define how the games should change or why it should, but I think you should play Ace Combat 3 for that. A lot of changes you might be expecting can be found in that game as they would not be viable in the other games of the series for reasons. You can change the outcomes of all the missions in that game and there are missions where you can crash both in the sky and on the ground.
There's missions there where you just race to the end of a map while evading moving buildings.

>ACX
Actually you are wrong. Ace Combat X is also unique and arguably superior to Ace Combat Zero in terms of mission changes.
Whenever you pick a mission, the enemy Ace Units move around the map like a chess board too.
Like the Alect squadron. Those guys were pretty challenging to fight because you can end up meeting them on a mountain map and they're all AA guns and SAMs.

None of the Ace Combats are the same.

What also was the focus of the reviews was the unnecessary COD aping and the plot. You can change the gameplay somewhat sure, but people buy Ace Combat for Ace Combat, you don't need to change the setting for no good reason.
>>
>>379677656
>well i think the ace combat series is doomed to lose attention until it is dead for good

Besides, despite your dislike of infinity, it did make plenty of money for them. So clearly, the "proven to work" approach works fine.

If project aces wants to create something completely new they can try a new series. It might work, it might not, but either way, what would be the point of continuing the ace combat series if its in-name only?

upclose combat against other jets. destruction and pursuit done up close. better immersion. aka known as DFM mode.

upclose ground attack path against ground targets. guidance and destruction done up close. better immersion.

the DFM mode was ruined by on-rails features which effected the game as a whole. if they refined the DFM mode to do away with the on-rails control of the aircraft and at times way too erratic camera movement, it could have been perfected. the emphasis being the game had upclose pursuit and destruction. i actually saw the targets instead of a red box saying they are locked on.

the ground attack mechanic was great as it is. not ruined by on-rails.

It's an arcade-style flight sim combat game with extreme over-the-top plots and the ability to make your player character mythical heroes thanks to video game logic (no one in FPS games react to you killing hundreds of people, but in Ace Combat you become a legend).

There are several games in the series for older console generations and they're all generally self contained outside plot elements that are only in it because the game developers love messing with their fans (Strangereal didn't have a name until the fans called it that).
