I hate what they did with Knuckles for the past few years, but i'll just be glad to play as him again, and we'll probably get a Metal Sonic boss fight to boot.

Blaze was a different kind of rival and one of the few good characters to come out of that era, Shadow was alright in a few things, but he got way too much attention there for a while.

Mecha Sonic was fucking great.
But so is Metal Sonic. They're both worthwhile Sonic robots that serve different functions.
Mecha Sonic was supposed to use Sonic's skillset against him. He has the spin attack, the spin dash, some speed in short bursts, but doesn't really excel at anything. Mecha Sonic in his next appearance is twice as good in nearly every way, taking Sonic's skillset and adding his own flare to them, on top of unique Sonic-esque abilities. He can even achieve a Super state.
Metal Sonic, on the other hand, wasn't designed to fight Sonic directly or mimic his abilities, he was designed to match (and is even able to momentarily surpass) Sonic's speed. Chaotix got him wrong, Heroes got him wrong, Boom probably got him wrong, I didn't play that one honestly.

Eggman managed to corner Sonic a couple times. Shadow is often portrayed to be evenly matched with him. Silver managed to beat Sonic once.

With Metal, it always just comes off as pathetic. Like in its first appearance, it got defeated by a door. And how whenever Sonic beats it, he always makes it look easy as fuck. And now Metal's so desperate for a win of any sort that it put together a huge plot just to challenge Sonic to a windboarding race. It's given up at trying to challenge him to a footrace or a fight and it decided to lower itself to something it might actually have a chance at winning at. It's just so sad and pathetic.

He'll, it's basically the core of its personality now, however little of that it has. The point of its existence is to beat Sonic, it never comes close to doing so, it keeps trying different things and still ends up failing, and now it's reduced to challenging him to board races.
