I'm curious about other views on this - regarding an issue I ran into while playing the Witcher 3.
All the usual shitposting threads aside (>combat etc etc) the game is superb, combat/story is great and weaves well with bombs/potions/signs.
But whenever I see screenshots/hear comments of how beautifully designed the cities/world is. I can't help but remember Novigrad/Beuclair/Skellige as blur.
Though I realized this towards the end of the game - I had to actually -force- myself to stop and look at the scenery, and the reason for this I think is the goddamn MINIMAP.
Every quest and every objective forces the player to focus their gaze onto the top right center of the screen. Tracking their singular marker to get to where they need to go.

Are there games that do this better? Perhaps having the path/hints shown in-world rather than the minimap itself?
Did anyone else experience this?
>>379660215
that's on purpose
if you actually try to focus on the game and develop a "mental map" you'll receive the gift of severe nausea and a headache, maybe some kind of motion sickness?
i only get it from the witcher 2 and 3, no other game.
Yes minimaps are cancer and should be removed
>>379660389
Did they mention the design aspect for preventing nausea? I'll admit the way the camera moves and the sheer size/level of detail for the game can cause a bit of a headache when compared to other games.
In smaller RPG's its easier to make landmarks in given areas - but when the world is so massive and detailed perhaps its more difficult.
>>379660215
100% agree, I didn't even really notice how pretty the game was until my second play through cause watched mini map too much.
>>379660298
Just have the quest giver explain what they want and force the player to listen. Quest markers on minimaps and shit actually have a psychological reinforcement effect making you think you're accomplishing something though
I had no problem with this at all, OP. Actually, I have no problem navigating Novigrad, Beauclair or Skellige by memory. It's not REmake mansion levels of map knowledge but it's serviceable
>>379660215
>use witcher sense
>game zooms in to fucking 10 FOV
>needed for like every quest ever
Also, the movement felt fucking funky, going backwards or so? NO chance geralt would struggle like a retard. Did they fix this? I played on release for a few days.
>>379660874
>did they fix this?
Yes, they added an alternate movement control option
>>379660874
They added in an alternate movement system that makes it a lot better
you can minimize or completely remove it
>>379660215
I didn't really have much of an issue enjoying the scenery, you've just got to not worry about the minimap that much and just focus on going in whatever general direction it's telling you too.
>>379660874
Luckily you can remove the Witcher Sense Fish-Eye effect which removes that headache.
But they should've chosen a better method of looking at them other than high-lighting them in red. Most players simply use the option that puts Icons on their minimap to save them the trouble (which is even MORE minimap following).
>>379660795
I found Novigrad was the most ''memorable'' of them all given how long you spend there (and you mostly stay around the Square/Fish Docks/Upper Area. Though the Bits/Dandelions Inn and such required some map usage.
I'm also speaking more about the detail of the game. I felt I had to stop constantly just to admire what was there because my gaze was never on the environment - just following the quest tracker,.
>>379660298
>>379660215
If you're playing on PC, I recommend getting the FHUD mod. I play the game with all HUD shit turned off and the health bar only turned on during combat. FHUD lets you have 3D quest markers when you use the Witcher Sense so you get a clean interface for most of the game. It lets me appreciate the game world a whole lot more.
I would have preferred having actual quest notes that can be followed instead of needing to rely on markers though.
>>379661076
In terms of a game-design perspective though. Would it be better to do that by default?
>>379660215
I guess thats a problem for some people. I really did not focus so much on the mini map.
I can see how that can be a thing though. Im just used to turning off such things when available or ignoring them otherwise.
>>379661257
Well fuck. Wish I had known of this mod (Added the texture/smoke/oil mods beforehand.) Already completed the game however.
>>379661381
Damned shame anon.
>>379660215
>All the usual shitposting threads aside (>combat etc etc) the game is superb, combat/story is great and weaves well with bombs/potions/signs.
>Let me umbrella all criticisms of this terrible game under "The usual shitposting"
The Witcher 3 is literally just an amalgamation of AAA design philosophies from the seventh and eighth generations of video games executed better than normal. But in the end all that this serves to do is prove that it was the core design of the AAA games of the last two gens that was fundamentally flawed and not their execution being bad.
And yeah, obviously minimaps and waypoints are used in place of actual navigable cities and world design while simultaneously ruining any chance of a real sense of exploration. Welcome to 2011 you gigantic mongoloid.
>>379661257
>3D quest markers when you use the Witcher Sense
I feel this would've been a better option to have by default. The player having a general sense of where to go merely by staring directly at the environment rather than tracking their gaze up to the minimap.
>>379660215
If a modern RPG doesn't do this the nu-male cucks that do reviews will crucify them for it
>>379661562
Looks like the autism arrived. Not that you're incorrect - but its not so much the point of this thread.
>>379661663
There are ways to say a thread is intended for leaving certain arguments at the door and discussing something different than usual without writing off one entire side of that argument.
>>379660215
Which do people prefer then?
>Finding Notes/Listening to NPC's
>Having a vague arrow on a 'compass' at the bottom ala Mass Effect
>Minimap guidance.
>?
>>379661584
>I feel this would've been a better option to have by default.
Agreed. In fact, I really liked how the first AC game had visual and audio cues that you can rely on instead of the minimap when playing. You can safely turn the minimap completely off and still be able to play the game well. Fable 2 did the same by replacing quest markers with that 'breadcrumbs' shit that they had.
Still, above all else, I hope RPGs come back to giving the player comprehensive notes on where to go and stop relying on quest markers and minimaps altogether.
>>379661461
I also have one of that scene.
>playing on 1440p 144Hz monitor
>constantly creaming pants
>can't stop
>>379662129
It's a beautiful segment of the game anon
>>379662169
I love the concept of a painted world.
The Oblivion quest where you have to rescue painter was one of my favorite.
>>379661932
Dialogue with hints or literal direction like "go east of here, turn right and the lake" etc
Points of interest that are easily identifiable in the game world and can be seen from a distance
Littered with small scale secrets and a few big scale secrets that maybe involve a game wide treasure hunt to get a handle on where they'll be
The more thats happening organically in the game the more I feel like I'm going on an adventure

HOL UP
We posting screenshots now?
>>379662794
It's a well-designed world anon. Share if you have any good ones - im just bumping for discussion.
>>379662372
I think organic is the keyword here. Enforcing the idea of a medieval-esque fantasy rather than relying on a piece of game-UI.
On an unrelated sidenote - was anyone pleased with the endings in Blood and Wine?
How is this game on PS4 Pro?
>>379662929

>Though I realized this towards the end of the game - I had to actually -force- myself to stop and look at the scenery, and the reason for this I think is the goddamn MINIMAP.
had this as well, ended up disabling the markers and it made a massive difference
Waypoints
Mini-maps
Fast travel
The rapists of open world design and the feeling of adventure.
>>379661257
I downloaded Friendly HUD a few hours in and I can't imagine going through the whole game without it. Solved the problem of staring at the minimap too much
>>379665187
>zero HUD screenshot
Marvelous, anon. You're alright.
>>379661932
Landmarks. Kinda like how NPCs in botw gave you directions.
>>379661990
>Still, above all else, I hope RPGs come back to giving the player comprehensive notes on where to go and stop relying on quest markers and minimaps altogether.
From what I hear of Breath of the Wild, it does a surprisingly good job of not holding your hand with stuff like this. With its success, I hope more developers follow suit.
