It's not an RPG.

But that isn't an excuse either for the piss poor writing. Witcher 3 isn't an RPG despite labelling itself as such, and it's given us Hearts of Stone, and I cannot for the life of me remember a damn thing about Inquisition.

Which is a shame, because Origins had a lot of interesting potential with it's writing and setting, and the overall world of Thedas also has loads of interesting potential. Hell, Kirkwall had potential OUT THE ASS as a smaller, confined story involving a shitty city, tension between a hardened but experienced and well learned Templar leader and the chafing Mage-leader just trying to secure a spot of safety, The Qunari and their no-nonsense ways and rigid code, and Hawke stuck in the middle with a ragtag group of weirdos shooting the shit. Yet instead we got the mess that was DA2.

DA2 had more memorable quests compared to Inquisition, both main story and sidequests alike. Dragon Age 2, the shitfest it was, still had the Qunari arc which was pretty good, but Inquisition is nothing but a slog. That's the best word to describe it. It was only played to finish off and put a cap in the DA universe, and is unpolished as all hell.

I can make peace with a generic dungeon design when I heard about how the game was basically forced out the door by EA.

The crafting system was great, so you didn't have to grind for materials for potions. There were different abilities. You got to put points into your stats. There was some decent party banter.

Compared to inquisition which just felt empty and soulless. Wandering Kirkwall at least had a sense of "Home" to it, and you grew familiar with it. The maps in inquisition just feel like you're dropped into an MMO server with nobody else in it, and even though there's some nice designed areas the combat feels so much worse somehow. Just running around exploring the maps was interesting at first, but only for the satisfaction I got from "discovering everything".

Playing it right now.

Cons: Writing is godawful. Story is stupid to the point that I long ago stopped giving a shit what happens. Animations are janky to the point of being a serious detriment. Characters all look like garbage, weapons look like garbage, armors look like garbage, enemies (mostly) look like garbage (all three fucking varieties of them). Maps are mostly huge empty spaces that serve no purpose other than to waste your time. Quests are abysmal; bottom-barrel MMO horseshit that is as pointless as it is unfun. There are fifty different categories of dumb shit to find and none of them are actually for anything useful. Combat is slow and far too simple, with little in the way of combat tactics or options -it's literally HOLD ATTACK KEY UNTIL ONE OF YOUR TWO ACTUALLY USEFUL ATTACKS COMES OFF COOLDOWN. I can't even just click on something to move to it for attacking/looting. I have to manually fucking do that shit, and it makes melee combat unbearable. Crafting is more of a pain in the ass than it is useful, and the frustration is compounded by the fact that nearly everything you can craft is better than what you can find or buy.

Pros: Adult dragons look cool. A lot of the environments actually do look cool. Empty, but cool. Some of the companions are actually good; Varric and Dorian are pretty well written, and the Cassandra romance is pretty adorable. Using mods to make Sera not look like a hideous man-troll makes her into a fairly interesting piece of shit character, proving once again that you can either be ugly or a cunt and still work, but you can't be an ugly cunt and not get death threats. The quests that are actually quests are sometimes pretty interesting, like the Envy demon trying to rape your mind and the detective shit at the Orlesian ball.

Final Verdict: 3/10. There just isn't enough good stuff here to outweigh the bad. Go play something better.

Characters, weapons and especially armor are great, but you know, you actually have to get further than 3 hours in to craft that.
Main quests are great. Side quests are only there to get your level up, they're shit, true, but you are not supposed to do every single one of them.
Combat is absolutely not simple, you are just playing on easy, with no trials on, and are too early in the game.
Enemies are varied later.
Crafting is one of the best parts in the game, I hated it first because the interface is terrible, but it's amazing once you get used to it.

Yeah neither do I, it's weird. I played a mage because I always played a mage and a lot of the effects just didn't really click with me. I don't get it but I always felt like I was doing no damage. Like, I'd hit a bear with fire damage and a tiny a decent bit of health would come off, but then a rogue or warrior would hit once with an unenchanted weapon and deal the same amount of damage.

I really like the Arcane Barrage spell, but the debuff never really seemed noticable, and when it hit it just felt "off". Maybe I should just turn off damage numbers or something if I ever re-install it. I just felt like building a "damage focused" mage didn't work, but the only spells available seemed damage based from memory.

The most fun I had playing inquisition was playing a Keeper in multiplayer and just keeping barrier up on everyone as much as I could, maybe because I actually felt useful or something. Damage just seems to "happen" when I hit things I think. Maybe it will improve when I get a better graphics card or something and the effects look a bit nicer. I'll probably go back to it at some point. But probably no time soon.

The really big damage mage spells are in the Fire tree.

You use Barrage to peel defense abit, then use Fire Man for insane damage (13X weapon damage at base), which is likely to crit if you're using the right buffs/equipment, and will also get bonus damage from your Barrier if you build for it.

Mage can absolutely out-DPS every other class, with the exception, maybe, of Rogue.

In 1P, anyway. In MP I have no idea. I didn't touch that.

I mean, the game pretty emphatically goes out of its way to establish that Bull is not your "typical" qunari. There's even evidence that his entire loyalty quest was just a thinly-veiled excuse to either reign him in or(more likely) cut him off once and for all(incidentally I also believe sparing the chargers is intended to be the "canon" option). Add to that the fact that he's a spy, has ambient dialogue that implies that he's more cunning than he lets on, and his whole fucked up background/psyche to begin with, and it's hard to tell WHAT his real deal even is.

Still, I don't really think he was a good or likable character. I actually agree with you for the most part about the "getting drunk and acting like a chad" shit and mostly left him alone because of that. I think the real problem with him is in the details and nuances, not the broad strokes. I also don't think that suddenly the entire Qunari race is ruined just because of him.

As far as the stuff with Krem, the only glaring issue I see with that is that Bull acts so casual about it, but again that can be explained by his "uniqueness." I can see it being something that happens, but only in rare/extreme circumstances. The fact that Krem wasn't born into the Qun lends credibility to it, I think. The real travesty would be whatsherface from Trespasser and all her very obviously female lackeys. I guess people already stopped caring at that point, though.

Care and attention to it's own lore better than most RPGs and even recent fiction in outside media. Great for hardcore fans. Not very fun to play though.

Okay, I was just too lazy cause it's 4:30 in the morning. But I'll try to explain myself in detail.

The writing makes sense, looks bad at first sight because the story goes in the direction of "ancient evil must be stopped". But it's all just to make Solas that much more relatable and human for the eventual confrontation in DA4. The only main quest I had a problem with was the mage recruitment time travel. Such a huge thing and it only appears there and is dropped forever. Never include time travel in your work because it shits on the entire universe with its "what ifs". Another shit thing is how you assume leadership immediately.
In contrast we have Envy demon, Haven siege, Orlais palace, the Fade and Nightmare demon, Arbor Wilds and Temple of Mythal. By the way: quest "What Pride Had Wrought" points to Solas, as Solas means pride in elvhen. Also his companion quest is "All New, Faded for Her" - anagram of "Dread Wolf Fen'Harel". I love little things like this. Next, we have Blackwall, another liar with a nice companion quest. Cass, who I expected to be a self-insert of some butch dyke writer, and she turned out to be a favorite of mine.
Varric keeps being Varric.
Dorian stars as himself.
Vivienne is hated by many, I like how she can put anybody down with her banter.
Cullen is struggling with addiction, Leliana with her faith.
If you have Loghain or Alistair as warden, you can see how it has affected them, Loghain especially has great dialogue in the cave.
Calpernia and Samson's troubled backgrounds make them great secondary villains, good idea to add quests to gain insight into that.
I find they tried to make all the characters mentioned very flawed and relatable.
The ones I didn't mention do not count as positive points for the game btw.

Yeah, I think the spell that really turned me off was the electric cage spell or whatever. It's a far down the tree spell, that deals no damage on cast, deals relatively low damage to something that runs into the fence it sets up, and stuns, all with very little visible effects.

Part of it just feels "wrong" to me as far as character building goes too. You're basically either a Damage mage or a barrier mage, except barrier helps damage too, and there's only one good tree for damage. There's no sustained effects like DA:O with spell wisp and such that give you a magic damage boost at the cost of max mana, there's no weird stuff like walking bomb, mana clash, force cage, petrify etc.

Maybe after a good break from RPG's or after I get around to finishing Andromeda I'll be able to come back to it. Hopefully there'll be a mod that turns it into the DA2 crafting system, or that changes the loot system or something. Otherwise it might be a bit of a slog even if I find myself enjoying the combat.

The side quests are no excuse for the open world when you look at what we had in DA:O. They are a huge black mark.

Weapons and armor: it's not fair to have the best things from crafting, I hate that so many games do this. But I enjoy how it's implemented here, many materials allow for great variance in just what specific stats you need. And even the materials change how your items look. The shit part is of course having to find mats. And in my opinion the armor designs (especially medium armor) all look fantastic.

Combat takes getting used to especially coming from DA:O and DA2. Very controller-centric. Tactics are gutted. But the abilities themselves and the builds are much better pronounced in my opinion, there's no filler like before. And there are a lot of trials you can turn on to make it harder. And it's a slog at the start with not enough abilities, but I found for my specializations it gets really fun around the middle of the game with fade-touched on every slot. And we have some great potions and grenades that can be combined with abilties, like jar of bees + tears of the dead.

Enemy variety: new demons come with levels. Especially fuck those ice-spouting floaters. And you can have either tevinter mages or red templars as your main enemy depending on choice. The dragons are all satisfying fights. And Hakkon and Descent add some really interesting new enemies.

Could you give me a quick run down on how specializations and fade-touched items work? I got the little tutorial thing when I played the game but didn't feel like it really explained much. Except that it seemed like there was a random chance to get a fade-touched material, and I didn't get enough when I did find one to make anything. Aren't they just normal items but the material gives a bigger buff?

Here's the rundown
You have mats. Say cotton, iron, obsidian. Every time you loot them, you have a very, very small chance to get a fade-touched of that item. But since you are always looting, you will have many different of those. And they are put in the masterwork slot of every item when crafting. You can read what each fade-touched adds there. My favorite for example is Fade-Touched Plush Fustian Velvet – 10 % Chance to use Hidden Blades on a hit, 5 attacks (Tier 3). Since you can have armors and weapons on 4 characters, there's so many masterwork slots that you can affod to give one of these to each of your 4 characters. Specs are very hit and miss. But some of them change entirely how you play your rotation
Most fun IMO:

Here's the good parts:

1. Some of the companions are really good, though I could do without others who seem to be there......because

2. If you hate the combat you can just role Knight Enchanter and swing your magic sword at enemies forever for infinite barrier and cut through everyone like fucking God.

3. Act 1 is actually properly paced

Trespasser was amazing, everyone already said that, but can I sing The Descent's praises for a minute?

It's been a long, long time since Dragon Age made me genuinely curious and excited to explore its world. Things got weirder and weirder as you went down, you felt like the devs read Journey to the Center of the Earth that day and decided that would be cool to have in the game.
The end is infuriatingly lacking in explanations, precisely because that information is probably relevant to the next game and would be revealed then. But it was so cool and, along with what we find out in Trespasser, completely tears up what we thought we knew.
