I bought FF7 on steam like a good goy but holy shit its unplayable. 15 fps in battles is hurting my eyes. I'm not even memeing.
Also HUGE BLACK BAR at the bottom of the screen. And unfiltered field sprites. I don't remember game being this bad on ps1. Even framerate, no way it ran at 15.

I think the best thing to do is to buff it (think how FFX handles the Brotherhood) after Cloud and Tifa journey through the Lifestream. It would still only have 2 Materia slots, but they could increase its AP growth rate and give it good damage and accuracy.

Literally pick any one of them except for II [which is not a good game for someone who's just getting into the franchise], III [V is basically a better version of III in almost every aspect], and VIII [same as II], they all play differently from each other and have unconnected stories except for the odd and rare direct sequel.

V, VI, VII, IX or X are perfectly good places to start. XV is the least Final Fantasy of all of them. XI and XIV are MMOs. My personal favorites are either V or IX, but literally every game has plenty of fans except maybe II and III

As for the side games, consider playing Final Fantasy Tactics at some point, it's an sRPG as opposed to a classic turn-based JRPG, but it's very good.
