Overwatch characters aren't unique. Blizzard simply takes tried and true character concepts and polishes them to a mirror sheen.

Blizzard's characters also fail to be interesting most of the time because they intentionally scrub them of anything that would drive off too many people.

You know what would make Overwatch more interesting? If characters had unavoidable character flaws that you could play around, confront in media and events.

Example: Instead of being a Gamer-culture spamming nothing, D.Va could have the ethno-nationalistic streak most Koreans have (look up the Korean creation myth for their country).

It's a lot more interesting to have a character who thinks she's better than the rest of the cast because she's a pure-bred Korean.

TF2 had its Meet the Team videos, which were for mostly interviews of the classes and they tied into the game; before Mann vs Machine at least the "story" is literally just these mercenaries are paid to kill each other. On top of this, they are all, without exception, some kind of selfish asshole. Their memorable characterizations from that point are all based around their ingame banter and playstyle.

Conversely Overwatch treats its game matches as "not canon lol". There's some kind of vague story going on and everyone has some intricate backstory, but you don't give a flying fuck because it doesn't tie into the game itself AT ALL. The ingame banter and dialogue as a consequence is extremely weak. S76 references the Deadlock Gang or Los Meurtos, you don't give a shit, nobody does. They're not in the game and they're not who you're fighting.

I was trying to explain why I think the characters in Overwatch feel like shit characters and used the way TF2 introduced its own characters as an example, but I'll try summing it up again so it's baby easy to understand.

TF2 introduces its characters as the asshole mercenaries you will be playing as in Meet the Team. From then on what makes their characters so memorable is playing as, with, and against them thanks largely to their FUCKING ENORMOUS amount of ingame banter.

Overwatch's characterization relies largely on comics, videos, etc. outside of the game in some overarching plotline nobody in their right mind gives a shit about. The very little dialogue and characterization ingame relies mostly on this, and as a consequence, they feel weak and boring as characters.

80 % of the characters are goody good goods that have done nothing wrong

I can see that, at least for some of them. Tracer's certainly easily likeable, hence why she's the posterchild. Lucio and Winston are pretty 1D too. There's room for development, but they haven't done it yet.

I'd argue that other characters have some pretty neat and interesting morals. There's a big gap in the lore with the "in-fighting" that happened within Overwatch, but I think the characters affected by that have a fair bit of depth. For example, with Gabriel you have him as the pretty casual "I don't care" guy we saw in the comic, but this was a cover for him operating under the radar in the actual uprising dialogue, where he clearly gave a shit. Post infighting he's suddenly consumed with a lot of rage, and there's speculation as to why that is - Why is he in that condition? Why does he want to seek out and kill other Overwatch operatives? Blizzard are certainly biding their time with that one since it's something they can capitalise on, but I'm certainly interested. Gabriel has one or two lines in his reaper form that makes me feel a bit sad for the guy, despite the fact that he's supposed to be a remorseless assassin.

That's one thing they really need to do. They need to show civilians being killed by Omnics. They need to SHOW us why Overwatch started a wetworks division.

There is maybe a few good story moments, or at least good important ones, but at the same time, they don't tell anything or move any plotline along, for instance, the McCree comic, why is he being hunted? We dunno, get no other reference to it or anything. Symmetra comic is also very bland and offers nothing to her character outside of being more of a boring cunt, Junkrat 'n Roadhog, while very neat, is also very detatched from everything. A lot of the supplemental material feels detatched and just there to tell random bits of some overarching story that we only have the past for, with absolutely nothing for the present plot line. It's very hard to feel invested in something like Sombra's cinematic when we don't get her motive, or most of talon's motives outside of being evil, or russia's motives outside of "They're workin with omnics!"
It just feels so sporadic and everywhere without anything to stand on for the characters so they feel so lifeless and bland and one note jokes.

All overwatch's characters are exposition to a story that isn't going anywhere. They all just have some cookie cutter backstory to explain their existence and that's it. They have a foundation, but Blizzard will never build on it. Without a story to characterize them, they'll just stay boring undeveloped plots of land of wasted potential. I like Reinhardt, but it upsets me that he'll never be more than a one-off "Overzealous Hero " Joke.
