What's your favorite turn based RPG?

Mine is FFX with the attack order manipulation but I found healing magic a bit too overpowered. I really liked the elemental system with ice vs fire and water vs thunder being strong against each other.

Honestly it's one of the worst systems of this kind i've ever seen. It's like an entire combat system was built around a downgraded version of gunblade/renzokuken/gf boost mechanics from FF8.

No joke, I literally started this game yesterday (now at the part where Sin RAPES the shit out of the Crusaders), and honestly this game's turn based system is fun as fuck. And this is coming from someone who doesn't normally enjoy turn based combat.
>>
>>379612243
A lot of the joy comes from the speed of it. You can just mash attack before the character is fully switched out and the guy will respond immediately. It kinda feels like how a good shooter feels, just somehow really responsive.
>>
>>379612874
Ok, I finished I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, XII, and XV, and out of all of those, in terms of gameplay only, I found XII the most fun. Most of the others had mediocre to great stories, but were absolute chores to play.

Really enjoying X so far, and I agree with you -- it really does feel responsive and the fast-paced nature of it doesn't make it feel monotonous.

Is this normal?

I never played XII and am waiting for the remaster, getting kinda hype. The trailer they released the other day makes the story look really good.
>>

Shadow hearts only for the built in timing system adding extra depth. It has its flaws otherwise.

Don't get too excited
>>379613141
the characters actually respond faster as you level up their speed. Meaning late game they are lighting fast, not merely with attacking, but their literal running across the field and casting animations increase in speed.

I've played I, II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XII and in gameplay only I think XII is in the bottom three.
>>
>>379613141

that's odd because i get so bored playing XII that i become physically noxious while playing it, same thing happens when i tried playing the witched 2 and 3... doesn't happen with other games..
>>
>>379617258
That's because it's an unfinished offline MMO where the core mechanics are just dumbed down from XI.
Doesn't help that the story is horrifically boring due to pacing and Vaan is a terrible main character.
>>
>>379617258
>>379617323
Really? How about the older FF games? Because I thought those were boring as fuck. I like FFXII since you can outright avoid battles, speed it up, make a gambit system do everything for you.

But I also like FFX's since it is one of the most engaging combat systems in the entire series.
>>
>>379617858
>Rock paper scissors

X's battle system only really shines during a handful of bosses like Sinspawn Gui or the Seymour fights.

Dragon Quest VIII

Chrono Trigger and Suikoden II come a close second.

>>379610092

FFX has a better system than most FF games. But it's still pretty bare bones. The gameplay in FFX basically comes down to a game of rock paper scissors. Every enemy basically fits into three categories. Ground based, flying or armored. And each character in your party is made to deal with them. Tidus is great at killing ground enemies quickly, but misses a lot when trying to hit flying enemies. Wakka is made for killing flying enemies with his range attack, but sucks at dealing damage to armored enemies. Auron destroys armored enemies, but also sucks at hitting flying enemies. Etc. Etc.

This seems intuitive. But it's really not any more complex than a game like Dragon Quest II on the NES.
>>
>>379618124
Very engaging compared to the other FF games I've played.

Fair enough but my biggest issue with X is that 80% of random encounters come down to 'put square in square hole' which is really limited and to make matters worse by the time you start opening up everyone's path on the Sphere Grid and getting Friend Spheres and what not you've probably reached the point in the game where there is no reason to be using anyone other than Tidus, Wakka and Rikku.
X definitely has the best boss fights though, that's when the combat system is best put to use and the singular enemies you meet in random encounters in the overworld can be pretty good too like the Sand Worms in Biknael Desert.
>>
>>379618124
I gotta agree with him, how are teh other entries in teh series any better? If anything they are worse.
>>
>>379618441

>Final Fantasy IV
>cast slow, haste, shell and blink on every boss after the Magus Sisters or you die: the game
>>
>>379617397
Yeah it played like an mmo.
I had played WoW and didn't care for it, and then I played FF12 and found it way too familiar, with wandering mobs that could jump in, with autoattacking combat and the occasional spell(at least wow had more input there)
If I had the zodiac system I think I would've liked the gameplay better, since at least it wouldn't have the worst leveling system in the series.

I liked the story though.
I gave up on the game because the gameplay was so fucking lame, but I gave it another shot( I think it may have taken a few tries) and once I got into the story I could soldier on, but everything was just a boring grind with very little input pretty much.

I think this is pretty fair. I think the core mechanics of the battle system is pretty good, it's just a shame that the enemies don't let it really reach full potential. Would love to see it expanded on, especially the sphere grid but that's not how FF games are made I suppose
>>
>>379618817
>other Tidua, Wakka, and Rikku

SMTIV or Xenoblade Chronicles
>>
>>379619198
Well you don't even have Rikku yet and at the beginning everyone is required to be used more or less but Yuna has a higher magic stat than Lulu so you should have her learn all black magic skills you can and Tidus, Wakka and Rikku have the highest Agility stats which is what determines turn order so at the end with Hastega you can sometimes have them each get three turns before the enemy gets one.
I'm not trying to hate on X, it's actually one of my favorites in the series but like >>379619161 said they had a great combat system on paper but kind of squandered it by not taking advantage of it with most enemy encounters. The same goes with XIII where unless you're going for 5 stars or doing the optional hunts you don't need to put much thought into it which would be remedied by designing enemies to fully take advantage of the combat system.
>>
>>379619443

Hard to find such a thing with both elements

Some games have ammo like SMT, Xenogears, Wild Arms, SaGa Frontier or Metal Max but have no crafting, unless you count upgrade paths in games like Metal Max, which lead to different tank weapons depending on how you upgrade them, other games have proper crafting like Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song, Wild Arms XF or the Tactics Ogre PSP remake, but no real ammo to speak of, unless you count Weapon Durability in some SaGa games as ammo.

I'm going to have to second Grandia 2. It may be full of just about every anime cliche out there, but I really liked the battle system. Namely, how you could time critical hits to cancel your enemies' attacks, how you had to manage positioning to get the most out of your AoE spells, and how running up to your enemy to use a melee attack happened in real time.

>>
>>379620014
Those work pretty well. Thanks bro.
>>
>>379620636
>Is it as bad as everyone says it is?
No, it's got some of the best combat but the problem is that it takes way too long to fully unlock everything.

It takes the ATB system but cuts up inputs into bars that you allow for some cool stuff to do such as if you queue a full string of attacks and launch an enemy into the air you can cancel out of the current string to fully refresh the bar and then put in more inputs to keep the enemy launched for a longer period of time.
It's also one of the few JRPGs to get buffs and debuffs right as they are absolute crucial to efficient play as well which is nice and if you decide to do any of the post game hunts then it's fun to mess around with party configurations since while each character learns every role they each do it a bit differently meaning some are better for different situations than others.

The difference between someone who knows what they're doing and someone who doesn't is night and day in XIII though.

Overall though it's a pretty average game.

>>
>>379610515
Too bad it falls apart in the second half
>>
>>379621640
There's not really any grinding in XIII since your Crystarium potential is capped at each chapter, it's you either have a well optimized paradigm deck and can keep a constant cycle of buffs/debuffs while staying on the offense and managing the Stagger gauge.

I suppose you can grind for weapon upgrades once you reach Pulse but it's never necessary. I've never had to grind in any Final Fantasy game just to get through the main story.

baten kaitos was really fun. and it was different from most RPGs because it was really fast, and the attacks were "cards" that shuffled into your hand.

i can't stand most turned based RPGs because they end up being way too slow to do anything, as everything is like 3 menus deep. It feels like you're fighting the ui rather than an enemy.

More variety, more options, smoother.
Also generally speaking Grandia 3 is a challenging game whereas you can mash X to win literally everything in G2 except two boss fights.

You can also skip idotic magic animations in 3 unlike 2.

>>379626215
It's IV but improved vastly and takes place during the neutral ending of IV. IV is only difficult at the beginning because the difficulty curve is fucked. Story is hit or miss for Final. If you're having trouble you could just turn down the difficulty for both anyway.

its the unsung hero of ps2 weebshit and probably one of my genre favorites.

it has a fairly mediocre story that goes full meh on second DVD but everything else is top notch, including the OST and some of the best visuals on the console. very recommended.

plus no random encounters, and locations actually have some nonlinearity and exploration unlike corridor level design of G2.

Breath of Fire 3.

I play it once every year for nostalgia purposes. I dunno what it is about the game, but for some reason it's stuck with me since the first day I played it. I've done literally everything in it, and tried different things every playthrough. I think it's a mix between artstyle, soundtrack and the setting/story.

JRPG on PS1 was usually turn based, and to be honest that's when the genre was at it's peak.
>>
>>379630158

That's a really dumb reason to stop playing a game. Also the true shield rune is better. It has a massive attack spell that's better than the Sword rune. And it has healing on top of that.

Besides, physical attacks are the best at dealing damage anyway.

And suddenly I realized how much FFX is like Avatar. And I feel bad.
>>
>>379630571
It's the cost of production back then compared to now, and obviously today voice acting is a huge blow, ends up cutting content.

PS1 and PS2 were both an amazing time to grow up in. You could literally go to a store and pick up any game to try it out and be amazed. The industry is saturated now, it's either Indie or AAA, there's barely anything inbetween.

I loved Tartarus, I actually thought it was much better than P4's hallways, and way better than mementos. It has a story significance and rushing up the floors is a good time. Especially when the reaper shows up. And there is no greater feeling than when you actually reach the top

>When Tidus finally learns the truth, he confronts Auron with anger
>Auron just shrugs and says he was afraid to tell him
>Auron then claims he needed Tidus to get close to Yuna to set things in motion, despite at the very beginning of the game being shocked that Tidus got to Besaid and constantly chastising Tidus to focus on his mission and not Yuna

No, it's pretty damn bad dude. The story has more holes than swiss cheese.

You're just making me think even more than you are focusing on the style over substance. "Auron was a badass loner!" doesn't make the story as a whole good. And his eventual development in the story kind of killed his badass image.

Please tell me you're not this dumb, I'd like to think X's story is pretty straight forward for a JRPG.
Auron didn't tell them that because he wanted them to see the corruption in Yevon for themselves and even if he did tell them that wouldn't stop them, he says as much himself.

>Tidus: Yuna, wait! Auron, you knew this was going to happen, didn’t you?
>Auron: Yes.
>Rikku: Why didn’t you tell us!?
>Auron: If I had told you the truth, would that really have stopped you from coming?
>Kimahri: Yuna.
>Yuna: I’m not going back.

He lets them see for themselves and then make their own decision, something he failed to do when he did the pilgrimage with Braska.

I'd like to say the same back to you.

Bringing a guy to a whole other world where he is an outsider and demanding he go on a mission without telling him what the mission is makes no god damn sense. Even if Auron didn't tell him about Yevon, he could have still told him dozens of things that would help him understand the world he's in. Or at least give him a fucking hint that his dad was the reason he was brought here. But even that was kept vague by a flat out lie Auron told Tidus.

The whole delaying of telling Tidus the truth (or really anything) was done just for the dramatic effect of one scene late in the game. It was not a well planned story plot point as you're implying. It was a badly developed plot twist, as every FF game tries to do this. It's no different from "You mean I'm from the moon!?" in Final Fantasy IV. Golbez realized who Cecil was 1/4 through the game. Yet kept trying to kill him and never told him. Then the big 'plot twist' happens and suddenly Golbez is completely open to talking about it. It's just plain bad writing.

No it isn't. Tidus directly asks multiple times what the final summoning is and all the party members just go quiet. When he DOES learn what the final summoning is, he goes ballistic and convinces Yuna not to go through with it. He also gets mad at Auron for not telling him and leads directly to the issues I referenced before.

Well over halfway through the game.

>and tells Tidus when they're in Dream Zanarkand Auron says 'We called it Sin' of course he knew.

There are two floors in Mitsuo's dungeons that have teleporters and the intersections that will turn you around but other than you just run down endless copy and pasted hallways with nothing to do, no puzzles to solve, nothing to keep track of and to make things worse P4 throws resource management out the window thanks to the fox.

Persona 4's dungeons are so bad but what's even worse is retards like you defend them.
>>
>>379634668

Auron didn't tell Tidus about the final summoning or his dad being Sin the first time he met him. Also, Auron could have and should have been there right after dragging Tidus to the future. Instead he just dumped him on a random island. If an Al Bhed ship hadn't been there, Tidus wouldn't have even gone anywhere. And that Al Bhed ship is another example of plot convenience, since if he didn't fall off that ship, it would have taken him right to the fucking place where the airship was and he could have avoided the entire pilgrimage and Yuna.

Do you see how many holes this game has? So many convenient things had to happen to lead to the ending Auron supposedly just let happen naturally. And yet also planned out ahead of time. This happens in almost all FF games so its not surprising. But it is bad writing.

Why would he during the chaos that ensued in Dream Zanarkand when Sin comes? He tells him that his father his Jecht the very next time they meet.
>on a random island.
Besaid is not a random island, Jecht purposefully put him there because that's where Yuna who is the new High Summoner is beginning her pilgrimage.
>since if he didn't fall off that ship, it would have taken him right to the fucking place where the airship was and he could have avoided the entire pilgrimage and Yuna.
Except Jecht purposefully guided him to Besaid. Jecht and Auron's entire plan was to end the cycle of Sin and the Final Summoning.

Dragon Quest VIII is my all time favorite, but that was mentioned already. For a runner up, I'll go with Mega Man X Command Mission. >Why would he during the chaos that ensued in Dream Zanarkand when Sin comes? He tells him that his father his Jecht the very next time they meet.
You're changing your story dude.

>Besaid is not a random island, Jecht purposefully put him there because that's where Yuna who is the new High Summoner is beginning her pilgrimage.
He didn't drop him at Besaid. He dropped him on a nameless island that you visit later in the game. Tidus gets saved by the Al Bhed and then taken on their ship. A ship that is conveniently sailing by Besaid on their way back to the Al Bhed homeland (which Besaid is nowhere near the course they would be going based on the world map you see later in the game). And Tidus is conveniently thrown off the boat within swimming distance of Besaid. Holy crap, surprised they didn't throw some midecholrians and mogs into there just to make it more ridiculous.

Oh I'm sorry, 'Sin planned it'. But if Sin (Jecht) planned it, it still doesn't explain why Auron put him on a random island and wasn't there to help guide him. And how Auron was suppose to magically have all this planned out.

By coming up with more examples, you just provide more evidence why the story is a series of plot convenience. Not a solid, well thought out plot. There's nothing wrong pointing this out. Most FF games have this problem. Like my example above with FFIV. In FFIV, Rydia magically gets thrown off the boat so she can be taken to the Eidion realm and learn to use magic better/grow up. Sound familiar? Almost like...Tidus falling off the Al Bhed boat so he can get to Besaid and meet with Yuna and face his destiny? This is a common plot device in Final Fantasy. But it's also bad writing.

Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song is my favorite. Regenerating battle points so you can spend them or save them within the battle and they don't carry over to the next battle is a great system. You are playing a RPG and you are gaining skills, you should be able to use those skills. Not only that but some amount of skills consume durability on your weapons as well so you may not always be too keen with going balls out on some skills. Anyways it isn't like you will be able to spam the 13 BP cost skills every turn, you always have to make sure you can use a healing spell just in case.

This isn't even mentioning everything else in the game.
