Let's have a thread dedicated to hidden or forgotten gems that you wish got more attention and discussions.

Pic related is Marathon 2 from Bungie, a pretty fucking fun classic FPS trilogy from the mid-90s featuring large space ships and alien environments. The first game is a bit dated and shows its age, but the second and third games really hold up well, in my opinion. Definitely should try playing it via the AlephOne source port if you're a fan of classic FPSs.

Grasshopper Action RPG.

Uses really basic sprites on one screen and more modern, painterly ones on the other. Full of great 4th wall breaking, weird and interesting areas, great music and a morrowind style level up system where the more you attack the more your attack levels up, the more you move the faster you get etc.

IIRC I think Habe had a flame thrower hidden away in some minor lava sector, and the only way you could get out was via rocket jumping. Honestly Marathon had so many secrets I never found, some of them I could see but never knew how to get and others I only found by pure chance. I'd definitely need a walkthrough to get all the secrets.
>The entire chapter "Durandal" was ass but there were a few levels I really liked in M1, like G4 Sunbathing and Eupfhoria.
G4 Sunbathing was a really cool map, but I got lost in it because I didn't know a wall-textured door had opened in the center of the stage while doing the switch hunt. I still like it though despite that. The entire Pfhor chapter is also fucking awesome, by far some of my favorite maps in M1.

I posted about Marathon the other day in a thread related to Xbox backwards compatibility titles. The Durandal remaster for XBLA was the one game that didn't show up on the list.

They somehow managed to make that game play ridiculously well with a controller, the gunplay and the visuals were really fucking good. I wish it made it to PC so I could play it, my 360's dead and the Aleph One ports are locked to 30fps and the mouse aim feels off.

Ah, yeah that sounds like a Marathon secret. But you get the flame thrower normally in No Artificial Colors which is 3 levels away so what's the point lmao.
>G4 Sunbathing was a really cool map, but I got lost in it because I didn't know a wall-textured door had opened in the center of the stage while doing the switch hunt
I didn't like G4 Sunbathing on my early playthroughs of Marathon but I really took the time to learn the map and be patient going through it on my most recent playthrough about a month ago and it's just so fucking cool. It's probably the map that feels the most like an actual place in the series, rather than a video game location. You have this one huge patrol of pfhor troopers on the top corner of the map and those random drive-by invisible S'pht Compliers fucking you in the ass out of nowhere. Just a top notch level in terms of both atmosphere and combat IMO. I wish there was another Vacuum level in M1. Supposedly "Neither High Nor Low" was supposed to be one because it has open windows but wasn't for whatever reason.

>>379609341
They showed up in Blaspheme Quarantine as well (a later level in M1) but yeah, that's only twice. I think Bungie realized they just weren't fun to fight. They're less of an enemy and more of a walking level hazard. I think it would've been cool to see a few here and there in the later games though.

>You have this one huge patrol of pfhor troopers on the top corner of the map and those random drive-by invisible S'pht Compliers fucking you in the ass out of nowhere.
Seriously, what the fuck was with those guys? Do certain levels in Marathon have randomly occurring enemy spawns? I could clear out an entire fucking sector and move on, only to backtrack later and find one lone Compiler of fighter wandering around. That shit really put me on edge, mixed with vacuum stages and the general dark atmosphere, it made the games stressful to play the first time around, they do a great job at that and I really commend them on being some of the only games to give me such a feeling of stress and dread. But yeah, G4SB was a really good map. I also really loved Pfhor Your Eyes Only for how the level was constructed, it's such a perfect level to show the player for the first time how literally alien and bizarre the Pfhor are.

Yeah I double checked that, and while it has the updated visuals from the XBLA remaster, it doesn't have 60fps support. I tried playing it a few years ago and it didn't really hold up to the remaster, unless I'm out of the loop and they managed to implement an unlocked framerate.

The last time I tried playing it (5-6 years ago?) I ended up just booting up Doom, even though the weapons are cooler in Marathon imo.

Yeah, but only on a few levels. The biggest offender of this was "Hang Brain" in Infinity as it had infinitely respawning major troopers The troopers in this level had edited physics files allowing them to have better sight, allowing them to gun you down across the map

Worse than chaingunners placed halfway across the map in Doom. I honestly don't remember Hang Brain's map layout well by name, doesn't help that the wiki hardly has any pages of Infinity's stages, only the first two games and a few of I's.
>Too bad in Durandal they switched out the gothic pfhor textures for colorful, happy pfhor textures with bright green and red.
In regards to the Pfhor chapter in M1, while the textures really did help add to the effect I think the abstract and strange level design of those maps is what made them stand out the most, but I do kinda agree that the bright colors can also subtract from that at times.

>I honestly don't remember Hang Brain's map layout well by name
I tried to take a screenshot but Jesus Christ this level is dark (and I'm playing on the "bright" setting too). It's a modified version of "Begging for Mercy Makes me Angry!" in Durandal, with upper levels added and the "puzzle" rooms removed. Anyway, troopers will continuously re spawn on the upper levels and it's pretty fucking annoying as they can easily kill you before you can reach the health station (there's only one in the level, and it's up there, ad it's only a x1 red station). So yeah, bullshit.

>In regards to the Pfhor chapter in M1, while the textures really did help add to the effect I think the abstract and strange level design of those maps is what made them stand out the most,
Yeah, they weren't just alien in looks, they were alien in feel too. Even the sounds were alien. It felt really menacing, you were the only (non-slave) human on this giant ship that was just completely foreign in nature. It really set the mood and I think Bungie could learn from their past, as Destiny felt very lacking in this regard.

>>379614047
A few things. (spoilers ahead)

There's a giant ass ship made out of the moon of Mars, Deimos, known as Marathon. It was raided by aliens called the Pfhor. The Pfhor were lured to the ship on purpose by an AI called Durandal. Durandal did this because he was going "rampant" (insane" and desired freedom, and wanted their ship. He eventually got it by freeing a slave race (By "him" freeing them, I mean you did, but you were under his bidding) that worked under the Pfhor, who helped thereafter gave him the ship. This race is called The S'pht, and are tiny mammals placed in floating exoskeletons. After Marathon 1, Durandal and the newly freed S'pht went to the old S'pht homeworld, taking you, the player, with them. There were two other AI's on Marathon. Leela, and Tycho. Tycho and Leela both were stolen by the Pfhor
>>
>>379608059

this was a really good game
>>
>>379614818
Oh, nah the first game might show its age here and there but it's still a really good game and worth playing, it's weaker by comparison to the others because it's the oldest title but not outright bad (kinda like how DKC1 is to DKC2/3). Give it a shot, the game had me hooked by the fourth stage and it'll make you appreciate the second game more.
>>
>>379614818
It's not a bad game, but it is the weakest and has aged poorly in comparison. The beginning is rather slow, but not bad. The middle levels are a pain and mostly filler bullshit, but the ending levels are greeeeaaaat. And really give you a sense of satisfaction. I would advise against skipping M1 if it's your first time going into Marathon, but it's up to you.

>It's a modified version of "Begging for Mercy Makes me Angry!" in Durandal, with upper levels added and the "puzzle" rooms removed
Huh, I don't think I ever realized that (probably because I played the games so far apart from each other). But yeah, I remember the map now.
>Yeah, they weren't just alien in looks, they were alien in feel too. Even the sounds were alien. It felt really menacing, you were the only (non-slave) human on this giant ship that was just completely foreign in nature.
I think the music selected for certain maps also really affected how they felt, like Pfhor Your Eyes Only having that really ambient, drawn out track that keeps you on your toes. It's part of why I dislike that they didn't have an OST in 2/I in favor of their dynamic sound effects, as nice as they were. Music can really change the mood of a level from "holy shit I'm going to run nonstop and murder everything" to "holy shit I'm fucking stressed out and I'm just walking down hallways".

the save point system is so great. Quicksaves ruin the game's difficulty.

Also most intense level in the games has to be in M2 when you get boarded by Pfhor. On Total Carnage it's just non stop grenade launcher spawn from the troopers. Always save my dual comabt shotgun ammo for that part.

>Jump a bit, rush back while firing
>Enemies behind me from a second closet
>Need to reload, surrounded by tons of enemies, dying, PANIC.jpg
>Pull out TOZT, back up to a wall, and fire in every god damn direction
I rarely used the TOZT because I didn't want to use up all the fuel, and just ended up with tons of fuel I never used until I reached some maps that handed out ammo like candy.

To be honest I was never a really big fan of the Marathon OST. It had some good tracks, like Aliens Again and Reprise, but some just felt really out of place, like Fat Man.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5-jOaG-Uz4
But I don't think they should have ditched the idea in M2 and M3, but just improved the OST. There are some fan OSTs you can download, but I've never used one.
>>
>>379617503
Yeah, that was hallway I was talking about. Such a fucking pain. I would try to use the Flame thrower, but then the S'pht would rape me because they're immune to fire. THEN if I was lucky enough to clear the room after using all my rockets, I had to deal with the enforcers below and there were like 10 of those fuckers. And by that point I already ran out of ammo for my AR and grenades so I had to go Leeroy Jenkins style. I have PTSD of that level.
>>
>>379617632
I honestly enjoy the whole OST, though I do admit that a few tracks took some time for me to like them, I remember the track for Ingue Ferroque really helped to give it that sense of run 'n gun action. I'm a major Doomfag and it was that stage that finally felt like I was in my comfort zone again, where I could run at full speeds with my guns constantly firing into hordes of enemies and using all the ammo I wanted because it was the final stage. I'll also look around and check out those fan OSTs, sounds interesting.
>>379618390
>I had to deal with the enforcers below and there were like 10 of those fuckers.
That's the part where there's a sudden drop-off at the end of the hallway and all the enemies are in a brightly lit room facing away from you, right? I remember jumping head first into that room and spamming rockets while falling, pretty memorable section even if annoying.

Urban Terror, a free multiplayer fps that started out as a Quake 3 mod then became it's own thing later on. The game is fairly fast paced and everything is available from the start.
I like to shill for this one everytime I have the chance, would recommend it to anyone who's sick of modern fps cancer and doesn't judge a game over it's graphics.

Brain Lord for SNES
Top down action game, the worldbuilding and the characters aren't it's strong point, but the dungeons were pretty good, the music was also nice from what I remember.

>>379602837
The game is ok, although it feels a little clunky and has noticiable fps drops at times, maybe it's because I'm playing the ps2 version (found it for 2 yurops). I was told to check out the multiplayer, but the bots are pretty shit, unfortunetly.

If you're not too interested in the story and just want to shoot stuff, maybe skip 1. But I highly recommend playing it first. Marathon trilogy is one of the greatest stories in vidya, and the first game arguably has the best story as well as setting the foundation for the sequels. More primitive graphics and level design than 2 & Infinity, but the gameplay itself is more or less identical.

Probably one of the greatest FPS games for that soundtrack and enemy design alone (not to mention challenging; the final Episode is a BITCH). To this day, I still can't believe how it was possible to make a soundtrack of that caliber in DOS.

Or you could introduce natural predators to kill them.
Or you could read the encyclopaedia and learn how to make it friendsly, earning you the piece of the tower of sour that prevents it form coming in anymore.
Or you could just BUY the tower of sour piece fromt he shop.

Unless you are thinking of professor pester who indeed could not be beaten off with a shovel. You either had to pay him off with money, or install decoy pinatas in the garden which he would go and "kill" over anything else.

Terminator: Future Shock
Ranks among the first fully 3D FPS games produced, predating the original Quake by several months and was the first to feature the smooth mouselook control scheme we're all used to today. It had large open levels with enterable interiors, plenty of variety in weapons and enemies, and even ground and air-based vehicles to control. The one thing it lacked was multiplayer, which is probably why it's not remembered much today.

It was also the first game produced by Todd Howard. Thanks to the modern-style controls it has aged quite well and is still somehow the best Terminator game to date. Runs nicely in DOSBox.

Durandal almost makes it seem like the player surpasses him in time, which I don't understand how that would be possible but it's a very chilling epitaph.

I also wonder if The Traveler in Destiny is a W'rkncacnter as we know from pathways Into the Darkness that a W'rkncacnter can affect reality when asleep and is known as "the sleeping god". And that the "light" and "dark" in Destiny are just different names for the same Chaos the sleeping god creates, but that's a theory with some deadends.

Brain dead. Why would you call us shills over our positive opinions for an obscure 14 year old game? That's just stupid, it's not like anyone gonna buy the game off Ebay because of us.

I like the fact it mixes things up in an FPS by making you pilot a spaceship rather than being on foot, allowing for more exploration and hectic action (especially when you get Maneuvering Jets which make you break the sound barrier). Plus you can play in 3rd person or 1st person, which is great, and who doesn't like explosives in FPSs?

I would've liked an expansion that mixed things up a bit and maybe add some more enemy ships or even tough Mancubus-tier infantry so as to break the """monotony""" of having 50+ suicide bombers in a typical skirmish, but it's unfortunate the game ended in the dark, even with the great quality of it.

Also: pic is a shot of the secret level in Episode 3.

It makes it slightly more retarded.

I remember a review of this with a negative tone complaining that one of the guns looked like it belonged in a tacky metal band as a guitar, and all I could think is "that sounds amazing, what is this faggot smoking?"

But I never saw it for sale anywhere and forgot about it.

This game was actually really clever for its time in the way it delivered exposition and the story it told.

Destiny has the POTENTIAL to be super cool, but Bungie just isn't putting their heart into the game. I think that's the difference between old Bungie and new Bungie. Old Bungie were players too, new Bungie is just developers looking to meet Activision's (rather low) standards. Even when Bungie was with MS they still put their heart into the game, and gave out free DLC and tried to make something fun. I did hear about a possible fourth Marathon game being in their contract though, but that was back in 2014. I don't know if hope is still alive but I'm really really hoping we get it this E3. If Bungie makes a new Marathon then I'd forgive them for them ripping me off with Destiny

Aside from the obvious 3D graphics and more advanced 3D level design, what would a fourth Marathon game be like or about?

Think Doom 4. It'd be similar to that, in some way. There would probably be more cinematics and less terminal text (sadly) in order to appeal to a modern audience, and the game would probably either
A. Take place in a side story in the Marathon universe (maybe even after the Marathon universe, seeing as the Universe closes in Infinity)
B. We play in one of the many different (failed) time lines from the beginning. Think Marathon 1 but with new maps.
>>
>>379635540
Chameleon Twist 2 is vastly superior.
>>
>>379636103
>Marathon 4, also known as MARATHON (ie Doom'16 being DOOM)
>It's a soft reboot that takes place in a failed timeline, following the plot of M1 but with brand new, more advanced maps (though some will be callbacks to the originals)
>They could make MARATHON 2 under the same premise in the failed timeline
Honestly, I think that could actually work.
>>
Why is bungie so creative at naming things. They always have a weird cryptic style about them. "Begging for mercy makes me angry" just these cool names they give levels.
>>
>>379638196
A lot of the names have some kind of meaning (but not always). Like, "The Hard Stuff Rules" is because of how difficult the level was to make in forge. "Whatever you Please" because the guy who made this map got told by his boss to "name it whatever you please"

>Pfhor Your Eyes Only faithfully remade within the 3D engine
Hell, I'd like to see that done even as a fan project. That sounds pretty sweet.
>Include the double shotguns because they're rad as fuck
>Make some new enemy variants, like you said, and improve their attacks and AI (so you don't have five fighters B-lining it to the barrel of your gun)
>Instead of trying to hide the similarities to Halo (since most people would think Halo came first), embrace Marathon's legacy and that Halo came from it
Even better is if they found a way to make smooth transitions between levels instead of using the jump pads (they'd still have to be used in some cases though).
>>
>>379607695
I don't know why this game it's so overpraised, it's only a decent shooter.
>>
>>379640345
A lot of maps wouldn't work in a 3D reboot, they'd have to make the maps more realistic to appeal to a modern, mainstream audience. Meaning less maps like Habe Quiddam and more like The Rose or G4 Sunbathing. But a lot of the Pfhor levels could easily work with a little work.
>Even better is if they found a way to make smooth transitions between levels instead of using the jump pads (they'd still have to be used in some cases though).
Yeah jump pads would have to be used in some locations, but I think in an ideal world, they would try to embrace the concept of being in this enormous ship. You would unlock new levels and enter them just by discovering that part of the ship. Maybe make the game less linear with side missions too? Honestly there's a lot they could do, it's fun to speculate but I don't want to think about it too hard because then I'll bum myself out.

>Each sector is color coded with certain wall patterns (ie red stripes along walls) so it feels like you're in different sectors
>All the fancy futuristic decorative bullshit they can put around the levels and how much more expansive they could be (though probably still very corridor based)
Fuck, now I kinda want a Marathon 4, even if it risks being too samey with Halo's aesthetic or something.
>>
>>379606009
>Darkwatch might be the best single-player FPS of the 2000s
That is objectively incorrect. Darkwatch is really quite mediocre. I only made it about half way through before I stopped because it became too samey.

If we ever get a Marathon 4 I hope they explore the idea that, you know, Marathon is literally a fucking moon that was converted into a ship. Maybe we could have some caverns where you go into the "moon" parts of the ship.

It'd definitely be interesting to see that concept played out more, it's really hard to tell otherwise. Maybe a G4 Sunbathing inspired level could be much more lunar like in design, maybe taking place inside a large crater with a dome ceiling or something.

I always assumed the ship was just very rounded and distant when viewed through Pfhor map windows, it never occurred to me that it was meant to look like a moon. I think it would have helped to have it shown in full for a chapter screen.
>>
>>379647304
Yeah, they only mentioned it once but it is indeed one of Mars' moons. A lot of the ammo you find scattered around is because there was a terrorist faction of Martian separatists called MIDA who planned on taking over the ship, so they stockpiled ammo secretly on-board.

Gotta love Bungie for the lengths they take to explain minor in-game mechanics like that, or like with Halo's HUD system being rigged into the helmet itself. It's nice to have an explanation for even the little details though, shows that they care.
