I would call XIV an alternative rather than competition. A lot of people will point to XIV's sub numbers compared to the number of players in other MMORPGs, but I would point out that most other MMORPGs have switched to a "free to play" model while XIV still survives off of subscriptions.

In terms of sub numbers it is still nowehere near WoW (althought WoW doesn't publish it's sub numbers anymore?) but I think the fact that XIV hasn't gone free to play yet yields merit.

Yoshida or someone explained this a few times over the past few years. SE and Blizzard 100% fund their MMORPGs or a lot of it. Other MMOs get investors to pour money into their development and want returns ASAP. So, when subscription numbers for a new MMORPG, which a lot of the big ones started with, aren't in line with investors's projections, they demand the game go F2P. SE and Blizzard are able to see the long term benefits of keeping subscriptions and take the early hits of lower profits now, but longer lasting subscription base for the future.

At this point in XIV's development, the engine, assets, tools, etc are all mature and no doubt cheaper than they were when they were made 4-5 years ago. While I doubt they're cutting a lot of expenses, I do believe that the cost of making XIV content today is cheaper than it was in 2012/13.

Rotations and priorities are very similar if you ask me. But if you call something a rotation you are essentially committing an order of button presses to memory, whereas priority is knowing what is the best thing to use in a given situation and why. In a rotation, what you press might be the best thing to use in a given sitation, but you're not thinking about it in those terms because you've committed it to memroy.

End-game is more like Diablo than it is WoW/XIV. You run Trials (raids)/Hard-mode dungeons for drops hoping for good attributes/synergies for certain specs.

I can't decide if I want to fantasia back to highlander, I was one for all of ARR, had a second fantasia when I bought HW, and fantasia'd to a cat.

If I have Stormblood Early Access marked on my Mog Station Account, that means I have Stormblood, right? Fell Cleave is an enormous jump over WAR's regular damage, and the class is basically entirely about setting up big Berserk windows where you maximize your number of Cleaves.

PLD's Holy Spirit isn't even as big a damage spike as PLD's regular combos under FoF because it's missing 10% of a damage buff, the slashing debuff, and most of your auto-attacks - it's as much a TP replenishing move for PLD as it is a damage move.

DRK's Bloodspiller is a very slight increase over their other damage, and is basically a second Dark Arts that uses a different resource and can be stacked with a standard Dark Arts.

Their active mitigation skills are a lot more differentiated than that.

I think the PLD numbers are definitely coming way down.

My suspicion is that they started off their SB balance tuning by doing the same thing they've been doing for three years and bumping all of PLD's (already high) base potencies up by 10-20, and then at some point they realized that that was just never going to work. Buffing FoF uptime and adding Requiescat/Holy Spirit was probably the next step, and seems to have been a pretty big success at making PLD strong. My guess is that what happened after the event was they took that data and then brought their base Potencies down to more or less be in line with the other tanks, now that FoF/Req/HS sort of equalize them on a base level.

I lost interest in the game during Cataclysm. Resubbed during Panda to play with a friend and found myself unable to appreciate it anymore.

Then I played on Vanilla private servers for a while. which were a fun reminder of what I actually like about the game. But you can't play the same version of an old game forever, which is why I eventually gave XIV a try.

Which basically makes me a wowfugee but I also really like the fact that XIV is like a JRPG in addition to being an MMO.
