Finally got around to playing this after only having and playing SA.
It's very offputting not being able to control the camera in cars, but I've gotten used to it after 10 missions and it's gotten fun again.

I just finished the story missions for the first time a few days ago (played VC at launch). It was great.

Now that I've moved on to do the same for SA, the missions are way more complex and special in nature but they're also too fucking long, even shooting feels worse to control although it is more fair.

i just went through all of them recently starting with 3 through to 4. i forgot how good these games were, having played gta 4 again it's much better than i remember.
