Ah, well IV is actually a good place to start since it's the beginning of the new story arch.

Basically what's going on is that the First Civilization created humans as a labour force, reproducing much faster and being physically stronger. A global catastrophe hit, making Earth just deadly enough for the FC to be killed off but for humanity to survive.

The humans who wanted to continue using the leftover technology from the FC ended up evolving into the Templar faction, while those that wanted humans to survive and thrive without FC tech became the Assassins.
