He's the glorified Treasure of Japan's "Palace" (i.e. Mementos) that gained sentience. He's basically a man-made god born from people desires to have their lives controlled for them, essentially for being too complacent to do anything themselves.

It's ironic that after all the work Shido put into monopolizing the research for himself, it wasn't that useful in the end. After Shido's gone his lackeys even go on to talk about possibly using what they had learned from the research to brainwash the public but that doesn't lead to anything since Yaldy hijacks the plot.

In my opinion, I think Yaldabaoth would have been better if the game acknowledged that he was created by Shido's group using cognitive research to engineer media manipulation that would lead to the public's subconscious yearning to be controlled which would allow them to control the public, but that led to Yaldabaoth's birth (A being who they had no way to control it since they couldn't enter the metaverse).

The writing was seriously mediocre though. Some neat ideas, but everything was stretched way too thin, the characters were bland and every emotional moment fell flat.

There were even parts that weren't even bad writing, just incredibly stupid decisions on part of the writers. Like the trip to Hawaii, or the ending, where after they disappear from the world and defeat god, they don't celebrate or anything, but just decide to go home. What a way to take out all momentum.

This. Her smarts have more to do with her being more tactically-inclined from a fighting perspective than being street smart with social interactions. It's why when she loses it she's very confident in her own skills and impulsively picks a fight with people.
