If you can combine both it would work. Metroid fans today don't like trying to find shit themselves plus the series can have a story like Fusion to work while having a world like Zero Mission (interconnected and not blocked off because of story). We would have Fusion's storytelling and Samus's personality and Zero Mission's exploration combined into one, while having a optional hint system for those having trouble figuring out where to go. It's a Metroid game made for both the hardcore and the casual gamer, a modernized experience.

the fusion's storytelling was only really there to setup the pseudo-horror narrative. same with the enclosed areas. Running around like a retarded chicken to escape the sa-X is what made Fusion great (that, and bosses.) Fusion got shat on because both of those of go against the exploration element. it's a lot harder to do the "trapped with a monster" angle when there's free roaming and you can just go anywhere. that's why ZM had to remove the suit to do "stealth" elements. and if the story isn't really impacting the narrative in a meaningful way you get Other M. hint system is fine, prime 3 had that as well. my instance of modernization is just making it more campy as opposed to OM/Fusion's "serious" story.

The thing is Sakamoto wants to expand on Samus's humanity. Fusion's way worked through inner monologues and conversations in the Navigation Rooms and her ship. Other M failed because it turned Metroid into a cinematic experience instead of integrating the story in the gameplay like Fusion did.

I don't think it's a proper platform for long term projects like games. Podcasts and individual artists sure but with things like video games there's nothing stopping them from endlessly delaying the development. Kickstarters at least for the most part have a deadline.
