How fucking long has this game been in development? I remember reading an article about it in 2012 in some free gamestop magazine, it looked interesting and I kept checking for updates on Epic's site, and nothing ever seemed to change. Was it vaporware or does it actually take them over 5 fucking years to develop an open world game with TF2-esque graphics?

vaporware. They just now, with paragon's recent success and finishing up it's new engine upgrades, have had time to develop it properly. The groundwork has been there though, but it'll be interesting to see how it works out. Not gonna drop cash on it but maybe since i'm whitelisted on paragon they'll give me a key.

It's probably just because I am browsing on my phone right now, but I seriously thought that was a real-life photograph of a plastic figurine / toy. I had to google other screenshots of the game to be sure it wasn't. Pretty amazing graphics

I still have beta access to this game. It's pretty boring. Not even open world. You do missions one at a time and can spend pretty much as long as you want building your base and looking for loot without going for objectives. After the mission is over, the world is wiped and the base you worked so hard on is no more.

It's definitely a weird type of game. All of the best things in the game are temporary (bases get wiped after missions, weapons with diablo-style roll values break permanently) and there's not much that makes me want to come back to it.

The original idea would have been fun if it had been a persistent world that you had to defend constantly or something. Spending 20 minutes building and then 5 minutes fighting is no fun.

It's not even as in-depth as H1Z1 scavenging. You can craft guns and bring your guns with you between levels. Destroying houses and furniture to get one of the three basic materials (bricks, wood, metal) is kind of fun.
