Assault was a solid shooter without being a 64 port/remaster, yet I generally only see negative reception on /v/. Why is that? Were the land missions that bad? I didn't think they were terrible, and they weren't that long either. And they even tried to mix it up a little so it wasn't repetitive, like having Fox get on the arwing mid-mission to fight off Starwolf.
I would welcome a Switch remaster of this.
And the multiplayer was badass.
>>379552995
In general third person shooters from 6th gen haven't aged super well, but for its time Assault was a good game and I still enjoy it. It's actually my personal favorite in the series, even though I'm supposed to say 64 is "the only good Star Fox game." It dared to imagine Star Fox as something bigger and better rather than treating 64 as the be-all-end-all of the franchise. Being able to control Fox outside of a ship made the player feel more connected to him, and the greater emphasis on story and expanding the Star Fox universe was a step in the right direction even if the writing was largely standard space opera cliches.
>>379553607
To add to this, I thought the aparoids were cool as shit. Assault was an example of franchise progression instead of rehashing. Even if ideas were reused, they were reinvented (Android's boss battle was the first fight in the game - his nephew operating a mech)
Also is that quote actually in the game?
>>379552995
Assualt was pretty barebones outside the multiplayer though. Especially after the robust (But still kind of shit) Adventures.
>>379554079
Adventures had some great music at least.
There were only like, what, 10 missions in assault?
>>379554079
>>379554197
Wasn't Adventures an entire different game reskinned with Starfox? I have to confess I've never played Adv, only saw my childhood buddy play it, but do you even pilot an arwing in the game?
>>379554049
>Also is that quote actually in the game?
yes
>>379554465
Yeah it was originally a Zelda clone called Dinosaur Planet but changed to starfox so it was more marketable.
>>379554079
>barebones
More barebones than Command or Zero?
>>379554465
>but do you even pilot an arwing in the game?
In little Gummi Ship esque interludes. There's only one Arwing boss thoughIt's the final boss
Wouldnt want a remaster, but would happily buy it on the vc.
>>379552995
some of them were a little repetitive, the game is also too short, you can end it like in 2 hours, I expected more content when it came out, or at least have different story routes like n64 have. But I think is a fun game after all, the multiplayer can be some real shit if your friends know how to play it
yes, pew pew is fun
Adventures 2 when?
Krystal in Smash when?
I have great memories of playing this game with my friends as a kid.
I'm willing to admit I have nostalgia goggles, but it's not a bad game. The Arwing levels are fucking awesome, even if the land bits were a bit awkward.
>>379552995
It needed more mission variety. Alternatively it would have been better if the on foot missions were linear shootan levels like how Kid Icarus Uprising did it.
Actually Uprising is just a better take at Assault.
>>379552995
Plot does not matter one bit in a rail shooter. They could copy paste the story from Starfox till the end of time, or even remove the story all together and it wouldn't matter.
>>379555471
The problem with KIU is that the rail shooter segments are mediocre, you get hand cramps like from Star Fox Command and what weapons you have is decided by Jap lottery bullshit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6543T0HI50
>>379552995
No branching paths
Too few on rails missions
Missions that weren't on rails were too samey with the having to jump back and forth between ground and sky depending on how full the sky was of enemies.
But it had the best multiplayer, without that I'm betting people would remember it even less.
>>379552995
It was disappointing shit. Bad SF game. Bad TPS. Maybe a nintenbro would like it if he's never played any other third person shooter.
Oh and the cool kids played battlefront multiplayer.
>>379552995
The main game was a cliche mess full of half-baked mechanics, which was a shame because there was a very good multiplayer mode hidden inside. Each map was a sandbox full of things you could use to murder each other and some of the unlocks were really cool.
Assault was a bunch of good ideas wadded up into a mediocre-at-best title.
>>379555384
Give it up, the blue semen demon's been retconned out.
The ground missions are the least of the game's problems, in fact I'd say the ground missions are better than the air missions.
Problem 1: Starfox 64 is a game known and beloved to this day for its incredibly memorable and charming characters. So what do we do with a sequel? Let's change the voice and general personality of literally every character except for Fox, Falco, Krystal, and Peppy.
My god what they did to poor Wolf and Leon, and Andrew too. You can't cash in on my nostalgia by doing it this wrong, fuck Texas Wolf.
Problem 2: The air levels suck. You never interact with the levels in the same way you do in Starfox 64, in Assault most of the time they're just scrolling backgrounds that look like they're not even scrolling at the same rate as the ship.
There's no alternate paths or bosses in any of them, they're incredibly short, and most of them are bland as hell. Beyond that the Arwing itself controls like it's running through molasses, it feels incredibly slow and floaty compared to how precise and fast 64's was.
Problem 3: There's like 10 fucking levels and the game is a straight linear story, no getting alternate paths through the game, no choosing one of three paths at the beginning, story doesn't change at all, etc.
Assault does have the most underrated multiplayer of just about any game I've ever played but the campaign was awful.
>>379552995
Has the best Star Wolf theme by a mile. Has an incredible regal feeling to it.

>>379556751
>and some of the unlocks were really cool.
Yeah the amount of settings you could tweak was what made the MP shine, like everyone having jetpacks.
>>379556591
exactly, the game was shit whitout multiplayer, i remeber playin hide and seek wth my pals and use the homing missil and 2vs2 fight ala fox withthe wolfen,
One of my favorite gamecube titles, I keep meaning to play through it again.
Also the multiplayer is god tier.
>>379557056
>beloved to this day for its incredibly memorable and charming characters.
thats bullshit and you know it. no one cares or remembers slippy's personality - the only thing you remember are the voice lines (gee ive been saved by fox & do a barrel roll) that were played repetitively. Not saying Assault's characterizations were any better, but you can't accuse it of losing the charm form N64 that was never there.
I'm convinced that Assault is way better than the latest shit that Nintendo has given us - Command, another N64 remaster on 3DS, and now Zero.
>>379554809
Andross wasn't even supposed to be in the game. The climax was supposed to be a battle with General Scales. Also, the game had a ton of cut content-- it was supposed to keep going after you rescue Krystal and her and Fox were supposed to get more character development. There's even a part where she teases Fox by saying "I'll help you, on one condition... if kiss me." (and obviously she wasn't being serious).
>>379556871
Star Fox Zero isn't canon.
>>379552995
All I can say is I wouldn't be half the degenerate I am today had I never crossed paths with this game
>>379558091
>The climax was supposed to be a battle with General Scales
That was such a disgusting blueballing moment.
>>379552995
Arwing stages that weren't "All range mode" were strictly linear and didn't have branching paths.
>>379554785
Assault is literally shorter than both
It's easily the best game in the series. It looks and plays GORGEOUS on Wii U in 16:9 with a GCN controller...
Assault was originally a multiplayer arcade game and it shows. The single player mode is SUPER short, you're on foot more than in vehicles, and the majority of missions have you shooting enemy spawners on the sides of walls.
They even tried to squeeze some extra play time by throwing in fucking Xevious.
>>379558448
>It's easily the best game in the series
In terms of multiplayer, sure. It's the second weakest when it comes to everything else.
>>379554785
Yes, Assault is literally only 10 levels.
>>379554079
it's because it was salvaged from an arcade game
>Those mp only levels like the desert
>>379557056
>Starfox 64 is a game known and beloved to this day for its incredibly memorable and charming characters
memes do not a character make anon, and 64 has bad voice acting, people just think it's quotable
And Wolf's best appearance is pretty much his Assault
>>379552995
Assault was great. Dinosaur Planet was enjoyable.
>>379554785
>Fortuna - on rails arwing
>Katina - foot with a landmaster that can't access the interiors
>Sargasso - mix of foot and all-range mode
>Fichina - landmaster section, foot, wing ride, all-range mode
>Asteroid Belt - on-rails arwing
>Sauria - mix of foot, all-range arwing, landmaster
>Corneria - on foot, wing ride boss
>Orbital Gate - all-range mode
>Aparoid Homeworld - mix of foot, all-range arwing, landmaster though most things are indoors
>Queen - all-range mode
that's it. no branching paths, no secret bosses.
Assault had a nice soundtrack. And the multiplayer was cool. But the campaign was super short and not all that enjoyable. It had a great Meteo and that's about it.
I also like how the characters don't look like midgets.
Too bad Nintendo thinks they should go look deformed. Though I'm glad Sakurai preferred to Wolf's Assault look.
best boy
this is the perfect Fox, personally
and Slippy too, I actually like Slippy in Assault
I don't need a remaster, but a sequel would be better. It had good ideas that can be improved on, just need to get the right developer because Platinum has proven they're not capable.
Though I must say the suits are a bit sentai-ish due to the colors. Then again Namco gonna Namco.
Zero was better.
I implore anyone who thinks Assault was good to replay it, right now.
Holy fuck, it is terrible. The controls are awful and just game design in general is absolute trash.

one thing I do like is how the characters feel older, that's something you don't see in most Nintendo franchises

>>379557059
It also had this smooth track that has no business being this good and doesn't even really fit the game, but was a nice surprise
https://youtu.be/841teEuW9Q0
Why can't Nintendo games have consistently good gameplay and/or plots?
>>379560935
what
only Peppy was the one with a heroic sacrifice that survived, and obviously Wolf, but the people who died in Aparoids are dead as well as like 90% of the dinosaurs

Prime was OK as far as Science-Fiction, but you can forget about characters.
May as well rewatch Prometheus at that point, or just play Prey (2017).
Iwata's greatest contribution was perfecting the marketing machine.
>>379561346
>monkies
>kies

>>379561268
Star Fox fucked itself into oblivion with Command, the only real choices Nintendo had were to either make prequels or retcon that shit out.
and I think that's about it with the character art
this doggo is cute too
>>379561361
>Comparing the Luminoth and Ing to Prometheus
>>379560760
I do think that was pretty fucked. The Aparoids in general were scary back in the day, they almost turn Tricky's planet into a wasteland and overrun Corneria right afterwards. It's not as if the fleet was losing the battle in the first mission by that much of a margin before Fox and his crew showed up, so they had numbers. They just plowed through into what may as well be the heart of the galaxy.
Then again, Corneria gets invaded in almost every game, so maybe it's not that big of a deal. Probably wouldn't want to live there.
>>379561471
they should just retcon that shit out
hell I remember in an interview they said if they were to follow a game after command and they'd use command's story, they'd pick something in the middle
>Krystal is the only female in the concept art
>and she was made some tea sucker from a dead developer
So why the fuck are Miyu, Faye, and Kat ignored?
>>379561709
honestly she feels obligatory, might as well replace her as a guy
>>379561780
>>379561709
because miyomoto hates anything having to do with starfox, and secretly wants the series to stay dead. Why else was Zero so...wrong, if it was not full on sabotage?
>>379561709
also technically Miyu and Faye don't exist
>>379562013
Because Iwata wanted a starfox game that used the gamepad
>>379562161
nah Iwata was just producer, this is all Miyamoto's handiwork
>>379556751
My friend and I spent the time unlocking the MP content, but we couldn't get any of our other friends at the time to really enjoy it.
Was just bad timing (2005) we just all graduated college, with everyone scrambling for jobs.
Realistically, who would handle the Starfox IP better, Retro or HAL?
>>379558625
To it's defense it has 3 difficulty levels and other stuff to do for replay value, granted not much.
The ability to get in and out of vehicles was really good in MP, even being able to get out, mid flight and shoot from the wing was real cool.
>>379562385
Neither. I don't want first-person, on-foot Star Fox and HAL has done very little shooter sections.

The slow reveal that Aparoids could take assimilate junk was pretty good. It's the one moment this game channels that weird freakyness/furry juxtaposition alot of the bosses of Star Fox 64 had.
>>379560760
This shit was too dark for a kids' game. The part where General Pepper and ROB suicide into the Aparoid base only to come back as robot zombies begging you to kill them was way more than I expected after 64 and Adventures.

>>379552995
Assasult was fun for me in the beginning, then I'd eventually reach a point where I was stuck and said fuck it. It was some on foot mission in a huge place.
I actually really like the concept but just wish it was executed better. I liked being on foot, it felt more like a full game rather than some on-rails arcade shit. I want them to give a game like this another try but with a good budget and development team.
