I started with Medieval 2, great game.

If you're a beginner, I'd recommend Shogun 2 then moving into either Rome or Medieval 2 if you are craving some more. I have heard good things about Atilla, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

From there on in, you'll wanna play whichever settings you are interested in. I recommend Darth mod for Empire.

Funny, because it's the most broken one in the series even now. Unlike Rome 2, it didn't get the patches it deserved.

That is pretty much me too, though I would make Rome number 1 and do Warhammer=Shogun2

Medieval 1 was the best. Rome was a downgrade then Medieval 2 was a slight upgrade from that with a few steps back. You can tell people didn't start with the first few games because they say things like >>379542259 and assume the earlier ones were like that as well when CA just has a history of incompetence.

Vanilla is ok, but it has some issues where you would almost never get to see a rival empire rising up because the AI starves themselves to death or never colonize anything. Also AI army recruitment is boring(they spam spearmen).

You have mods that fix or partially fix those things though.

We don't know for sure, Old friend is still a mystery but since it's not a Lord everyone seems to think it will be Krell for the VC as a legendary hero, the new race is generally assumed to be Norsca, but some people are holding out for Tilea/Estalia and I'm hoping against hope that it's Halflings because the game would benefit from shortstack waifus.

how the fuck do I learn to play this game? I love this kind of RTS/managing games but suck at them

The mods are better than the games. Europa Barbarorum would be my favorite but it crashes all the fucking time because it's on Rome 1's shitty engine. I guess Divide et Impera for Rome 2 is my favorite, it's kinda like EB for Rome 2.

The old Rome I is all about artillery. Get an army of strong spear infantry to kill cavalry and hold enemy infantry back. Use your artillery to bomb the ever loving shit out of their archers and back line. Works every time

Is Rome 2 any good? I bought it at launch way back when and never played it cause my computer wasnt able to handle it, but I upgraded a few months ago and never got around to trying it out

I'm split between Attila and Fall of the Samurai. Both are just so fucking good at what they do.

I wish Warhammer had been better though. The battles are top tier, but sieges and general campaign play was/is lacking (bearing in mind I stopped playing after Beastmen came out). Does anyone have a clue what the next historical game will be?
