There might be no sub classes, but every class has two specializations and, honestly, almost every combination works. Unlike other EOs, this game doesn't really punish you for mistakes.
I don't know how they managed to make it so easy.
I completed it in Japanese without being able to read a single word on hard and it was easier than playing EO4 in English.

You know what happens when you get rid of subclassing in a game like this? You gotta pump stats and skills to every class individually making them better all around without having to spend points on your subclass, that also applies to your stats.
If you played 4, which I assume you did, you can see an example of this in the imperialist class, that class was almost perfect by itself as a damage dealer because of how much damage it could create without the need of actually making a build around gimmicks with a subclass, and how shitty the class was as a subclass itself.
A second problem with the game is the fact the game gives you a lot of freedom early on thanks to the fact you only need to invest 1 point out of the three they give you early on into the "Proficiency" skill, which boosts your characters way too much for the one point you need to sacrifice every 20 levels, making the early game more of a joke

Anyone tried Stranger of Sword City? Thinking of getting the updated version on the vita. How does it compare to EO2U's classic mode?

I want to finish one of them. I keep starting 1 and getting to the second stratum and just getting bored of all the grinding that's necessary. Do the later games fix that at all? I mean, I don't mind a bit of grinding but you have to spend hours just fighting the same mobs to get the gear from their drops.

I only played a little of SoSC. It feels too different to me. I was going through battles pretty easily and it just didn't feel as fun as EO. I really like the atmosphere and aesthetic of SoSC though. Party management also didn't feel as interesting.
