All of this might have been cool if I have even the slightest shit about him when I played the game. My very first conversation, I mentioned spirits being dangerous and he threw a fit about it, so I told him to fuck off and never used him in my party. He also has an incredibly unappealing character design, which made me care about him even less. By the time the epilogue rolled around, the only reaction I could muster was, "Oh."

Well, personal tastes, I guess. I found him very enjoyable and if you actually spend time talking to him in a civilized way, without mocking him, he opens up more and becomes much kinder.

Anyway, the writer made sure Solas would be even more dangerous for an Inquisitor he never got along with: if you're friends with him/romanced him, you still have a chance to redeem him. If you never spent time talking with him, then he doesn't give a fuck about you or Thedas and you actually enraged a powerful god.

In one of the early drafts for the final scene in Trespasser, he was supposed to drag an Inquisitor he hated all the way towards the eluvian by their right hand, enter the mirror and shut it down just as the Inquisitor's hand passed through, to cut it off completely. They didn't d that, but he actually grabs the Inquisitor's hand differently if he hates them

Solas was like the best part of inquisition. The main villain travelling with you the entire time and tricking you into accepting his beliefs and even romancing you is good stuff. He seems like a moralfag at first but you see a different side of him when you piss him off.

They weren't in a position to be picky about who helps them with no other mages around and demons falling from the sky. Their primary suspect was the inquisitor so they had no reason to believe some random elf did it.

Adding the option to romance him was brilliant, villain romances never happen. He spends the whole route being a spooked horse about kissing before BTFOing the inquisitor in the middle of the game. I think the female elf route gives you an important side of his story even as murky as it is.

I doubt we've seen his true character yet. We've seen glimpses of him being violent or angry but he was a mellow under-the-radar kind of guy for the most part. He's going from that to Solas the motherfucking Dread Wolf in DA4 with a wolf hood and probably blood magic.
