I like me some space.

RTS/Sim/RPG/Whatever.
Post about space games.

Anyone else try Starpoint Gemini Warlords? Its pretty simplistic but I find it kinda fun as a weird mount+blade/freelancer mix.
Controls are a tad wonky and ship scaling isn't the best but still enjoyable.

Everspace is breddy gud
>>
>>379523443
I had a look at that, is there much meat to the game?
Also how's the ship variety? Is it just fighters/corvette size? I got that impression from the style of combat

You have a choice of three ships, one unlocked from the start.
Interceptor: middle of the road between survivability and weaponry, can mount the most stuff, not amazing in any way but always serviceable
Scout: cloak&dagger, very little shields and hull, can use teleporters and cloaking devices, comes with a shock rifle so you generally want to charge it and snipe someone before cloaking and changing position to keep out of harm's way (shock rifle has 4000 range and is hitscan, the highest of any weapon)
Gunship: no shield, lot of armor (percentage damage reduction), very mean guns and a automatic turret, you generally want to learn to dodge since you don't have a normal shield and craft lots of consumables (especially damage reducing/enhancing ones) to really dish out the pain, it's other exclusive device is a front facing shield that when activated makes you completely invulnerable from the front, great for killing corvettes, plus you can activate it and the turret at the same time

Every time you die you can use your earned money to buy upgrades that persist between runs, any unspent money are lost once you commence a new run so try to maximize spending

>>
>>379524987
Think FTL mixed with Freespace.
You go from area to area, zone to zone killing stuff and then jumping on to the next.
There is also a story you progressively discover as you progress through the game.

GalCiv 3 is quite fun. I don't ever see anybody else around here mention it but it has a feel not at all unlike Master of Orion 2 from back in the day.

I'm playing Stellaris now but I'm still very early. I like Paradox's shit in general but of course they take years after release to get it complete.

This is kinda the issue.
There was a big drought of space games and then suddenly a ton started getting fired out like star drive, star ruler, gal civ 3.

But they're all kinda half baked.
Stellaris is the one I'm keeping my eye on as with paradox its got a fuckton of potential.
Everspace is also good too.

>Literally only problem with it is the fact if you upgrade an engine/weapon tier by one instead of doing them all at once you get your shit pushed in because the other ships move up to that tier.
>Developers abandon the game instead of fixing that and releasing DLC/Continuing the series.

I mean, I get that it was made by 2 guys and a 2d flight form isn't for everyone, but the game was britty good.

>>379530626
They've been trying to fix the game for years but they don't see what the real problem is.
I never got into the X series because of how vast it really is. It's lonely as hell and will burn you out if you aren't overwhelmingly excited about piloting a space ship from A to B then repeating it with combat and plot in between.
If you are the autistic kind of guy with joysticks and a comfy space-chair, I am more envious of you than any other person in the world because I really, really just want to fly around spess, but get bored really quick.
>>
Is the endless space 2 map sharing desync thing fixed yet?

If you enter multiplayer and engage in a map sharing treaty, it will desync like every other fucking turn.

Other than that, the game is really damn good. There are flaws, but compared to how satisfying each of the many and varied different systems are, it's not much.

Just worried that it won't get off the ground after its release with a major bug.
>>

>If you are the autistic kind of guy with joysticks and a comfy space-chair
Not really. I haven't played any single player space exploration games actually, apart from No Man's Sky. The thing is, I have a massive turn on for these kind of games but it seems there isn't any decent ones that worth the time.
Sometimes I just want to turn my phone off, put on my headphones and do basic, chore kinda things in games. I mean, I sometimes load StarCraft 2 or Warcraft 3 and play by myself, without any opponents, just building a base and watching units move one place to another. I just want a decent solo space game where I could do all these kinda pointless things, but in the void of the vacuum.
>>
>>379531548

1. What space game lets you get the feel of really being in control of a full blown, pic-related battlecruiser? Elite Dangerous scratches my fighter/freighter itch but its large ships don't entirely feel like they were worth the wait for me.

2. What's a really good space-themed RPG that isn't Mass Effect 1 or 2, or KOTOR 1 or 2?

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident was pretty nice. I enjoyed it more before the end of the first part of the game with the hard sci-fi ships.

Birth of a Federation is based on the MoO2 engine, set in the Star Trek Universe as well. Only real issue is it has memory leaks that were never fixed. Strange Adventures in Infinite Space was pretty cool too.

>>379527648
Issue with Stellaris is that combat just isn't good. If planets actually had a building for anti-space weaponry, it'd be much more interesting than "Destroy the enemy fleet, siege them out". That and add a value where smaller fleets with hulls fulfilling certain roles make them more effective than a gamey strategy of massing basic corvettes. It also feels like a simplified Distant Worlds to me too.

Pic related is one my more favorite ships though.

The most ambitious attempt at immersing the player in a galaxy that reacts to yet doesnt revolve around the player with incredible scale and depth...is also the most flawed. Butt fuck it I love putting on my nice headphones and doing some missions in X Rebirth. The fact that I can walk around my ship and space ports, even though it sucks at doing this, is immersive. I with ED had a proper arcade mode. Its so hard for me to find a space game that fit my tastes. Last one was Earth and Beyond.

I wish ED had a mode where the controls were simplified and a bunch of shit was automated/reduced. Fuel/heat management gets too much at times and just learning to land inside a space station is fucking science on its own. Its a great sim but I want something arcadey where I can just shoot space monsters, mine asteroids, collect loot to equip to my ship, and earn money to buy bigger more badass ships. All in third person camera so I can oogle my ship in the process.

Watching Elite screens on a space game makes me sad. There's a lot of wasted potential there and it's being killed slowly by the devs pandering to RNG and a cancerous community.

The only thing it hooks me to this game from time to time is the aliens arc, and you can miss all of it because it's all based on RNG.

at gamescom i believe it was 2012 or 11 and i asked him after a X Rebirth presentation: "Hey will i be able to pilot battleships?" His Answer was an annoyed: "How would you fly a big battleship with a joystick without hitting a station or something?!" I could not answer that question because it took me totally off-guard. I would never imagine playing this gigantic economic and management simulation with a joystick.
I thought about that answer some time and i realized that the developers did not understand why people played X3 and they were pretty much detached form their fan base. So i knew that X Rebirth would be a massive blunder for me and Egosoft. And well it went just as i expected.

The lack of creative UI design in all the Endless games makes me want to puke and gauge my eye out. And the most infuriating part is that most people praise it for "its clean" UI.
People have forgotten how thematic and creative UI design worked in the old days.

So they thought "If they have a joystick, they can't use a keyboard or a mouse at the same time"?
What a shitty uninnovative approach. There are joysticks with loads of buttons, so why not?
>>379549287
You mean like the clusterfucks they called UIs in the early 2000's? Yeah, I loved having my screen full of notifications and shit I didn't need in my face 90% of the time.

>>379528421
Nothing like diablo

It's not even space WoW, you literally just spend 3x as much as the other guy and then hit f1+orbit to win

inb4 all the exceptions to the rule hurr durr eve combat is actually fun you only press f1 to win 90% of the time not 100% of the time!!!

Everything in eve is great, except the combat with is completely shit and should've been redone literally a decade ago. To this day the shitty combat system is the biggest thing keeping me from playing the game again
>>

While I agree with you, I think PvP is played by manually using the mouse to adjust the course of your ship. If you orbit, you're playing wrong.

The only decent space game I've played in the past 3-4 years is probably starsector and even that only in the past month

It's amazing how awful the genre is

Every time I think a game might end up being decent the devs completely drop the ball.

Too bad you can't pilot destroyers or capital ships in that game.
>>

If you play strategically, you can use cover and place yourself where you're at an advantage even in a Dreadnought
>>

Well it was more about "you got a fast ass with a BB and you will hit something with it, because joysticks..." The statement still baffles me to this day.

>>379549287 (You)
Well i played many games out of 2000 and non of the UI ever bothered me. I like having organs and creep on my UI when playing Zerg. Or having metal and wires when playing Terran. It adds to the immersion.
The UI in all the Endless games is the hard opposite its just clean black and withe blandness with no character.
And the main problem is most games nowadays just have a generic bland "clean" UI. It feels like every UI designer visited the same html 5 design course. Games should have a creative uniqueness to them and even by removing something like thematic UI they loose some of that.

Well when you're fighting against a speedy ship that can easily retreat with a lil teleport, it's obvious that the solution is to throw even speedier things at it. It helps that the Wolf is very shit at dealing with things that arent in front of it.

I heard some reviews about how buggy it is. Is it fun? What can I compare it to? Is it truly Freelancer with capital ships?
>>

yeah the sprites are not that great.
I once made a mod for that game myself but i think it does not work anymore and most of the good tools like a boundary drawer for sprites are not supported anymore.
My mod added a gigantic space Bismark with turrets and all. It had no Shields but tons of armor. Two salvos of all the main 150mm guns killed an onslaught.

That's partly why carriers were added. Now you have things that can counter the harassment Wolves can pack on you. You can also load up carriers with bomber squadrons that fling a ton of slow unarmed bombs that can utterly destroy massive ships. Be warned that point defense can shoot them down.

My favorite space games that I have been playing on rotation:
1. Freespace 2 with Freespace Open installed. This is fun arcadey space sim action, unlike most modern space sims which focus more on Newtonian physics and complicated unnecessary features.
2. Starpoint Gemini 2 - picked this up last month when it was free along with the Origins DLC. Pretty fun.
3. Starpoint Gemini Warlords - very fun and am looking forward to improvements
4. Everspace - a fun roguelike in space
5. Rodina - fun little space game, from an ex-Bethesda developer that was on the Oblivion team
6. Avorion - little fun game where you build your ship and explore
7. Drox Operative - Diablo, but with spaceships, and inside a 4x game played by the AI
8. No Man's Sky - I actually boot this up from time to time, it's still fun.

Thinking of purchasing Empyrion Galactic Survival, anyone play that game? How is it? Worth playing?

Empyrion is kind a nice because its straight forward with its building but also it feels a little cheap. If you want more of a simple and rewarding progression and not much building take Empyrion. But if you want more building and grinding and an unstable multiplayer take Space Engineers.

What game lets me board a ship, fly it somewhere, get off and do shit like getting resources, and possibly sneak into another ship and take some poor folks out with good combat? Though I have to maintain my ship, and maybe do regular ship on ship fights. Something along those lines or similar.

Remember, FSO itself doesn't really make any noticeable changes, you need to combine it with other mods for it to be noticeable (they just wouldn't work otherwise)

>>379560320
Maybe that's the reason, maybe I didn't install much more than that. I could have sworn there was an installer which had additional graphical enhancements.

I mean, it's entirely possible you did get that one and just fucked something up, I'm just spitballing here.

Whenever you do try again, if you weren't aware of it you should use www fsoinstaller com

It's ridiculously easy to setup. Have gog copy of fs2, run the installer, get however much or little you want, run the launcher with the mod/s you want (MediaVPs being the graphics update), and you're good.
