Very boring platformers with lackluster combat, which is made up with great characters, music, and 10/10 fap material.

Love them all. I really enjoy the gameplay and dungeon design, which doesn't seem like the popular opinion here.

Might also be very unpopular but outside of art and music HGH is my least favorite, because it feels more closed off and the level design is mostly linear. Still love it tho.

Pretty good. Makes up for generic gameplay with characters and writing.

Good writing, great music, likable characters with fap appeal.

Gameplay is meh outside of Pirate's Curse or the GBC original, which are just okay.

Never played one, Is 1/2 Genie worth getting on the Switch?

Every game has so much potential that goes unfulfilled. RR had that layer jumping mechanic which could have made for amazing dungeons, but they use it on like two overworld areas and that's it. PC actually stepped up its game by the end but the build up to Shantae being fun to control takes way too long.

HGH is fun but there's not enough of it, tons of abilities go underutilized.

They're making character dlc but what they should be doing is putting out a level editor. Just let us move around some blocks and basic obstacles/enemies, maybe an option to limit how many transformations you have access to, and the ability to share levels and we'd be able to have a grand fucking time.

I want a good level for spider shantae god dammit.

I really like the series, got the first three games on 3DS and HGH today on Switch. It's certainly not amazing gameplay-wise, but it's competent, fun and greatly enhanced by the world and characters.

They're all extremely mediocre and only get a pass because of waifus and good writing.

I actually own a copy of the original Shantae and even as a kid I didn't think it was anything special. Pirate's Curse is the closest the series has come to escaping a 6/10 in my book, even if it means it was just a 7/10 instead.

Mediocre. Also something about the cast rubs me the wrong way. Like the only two characters I can say I like are Shantae and Rotty. Everyone else is insufferable.

It's fine, camera is too zoomed-in which leads to cheap shots and the occasional leap of faith, graphics and music are already great. You can pick it up on the 3DS eShop.

They each have their merits. The first game is a technical marvel on the GBC and comes off as Castlevania II: Good edition ft. waifus. Second game is mediocre but has cool sprite art. Pirate's Curse is a great platformer with the Metroidvania template, and is the best in the series at pretty much everything. HGH is also good, though it is fairly short and feels underbaked in the writing department.

Pirate's Curse is the only one that I'd actually call good. Half Genie Hero was a total mess.
But I like the characters.

Half-Genie Hero is absolute trash.
Incredibly shitty level design, no balancing work done so you have to intentionally gimp yourself to have it not be mindlessly easy, redundant transformations, have to completely ignore the bat form in order to not break the game, lazy fetch fetch quests to pad out the already meagre content in these short, linear fucking levels, boss patterns are bottom of the barrel "avoid slow projectile then mash attack" with no challenge.

On top of all that, it was delayed by two years and the main campaign still feels fucking rushed and unfinished thanks to how much worse the fucking level design gets after the desert level.

Half-Genie Hero is terrible game and anyone who thinks it's anything above mediocre at it's absolute best is a fucking retard with no taste.

Fuck Half-Genie Hero.

Yes. There's 8 animal/monstergirl TFs and a few misc. TFs as well. Lots of cute designs and animations. Constantly utilized. They only really feel unnecessary during boss battles which is a shame.

It's personally one of my favorites but it definitely has that retro game feel. It's a huge metroidvania with no map, requires a lot of backtracking and exploring, you basically have to master each area, especially if you want to 100% it.

They're terrible. The fact that this series has gotten away with being a colorful platformer that becomes unbelievably dull in the first half hour of each game is appalling.

They're not on par with a genuine Metroid or Castlevania title, but I'd say they're all a good time, definitely above shovelware and the average modern indie game. Even Half-Genie Hero is fun, despite being below series average in terms of content. /v/ acts like the series including gratuitous fanservice is some desperate attempt by the developers to cover up the flaws, but truthfully the cute girls are just icing on the cake.

Risky's Revenge is (imo) the worst in the series, but iirc, it's also the shortest, so don't feel too bad. I'm sure you can muscle through it if you look up a guide for where you're stuck at.

Did they make it so the bat can't fly horizontally forever, trivialising nearly every single platforming section unless you intentionally avoid using it?
Did they completely redesign every level past the desert so the second half of the game doesn't go by in a blur due to how short and easy the levels are?
Did they replace the fetch quests with actual content that isn't "go to spot X, use transformation to bypass obstacle and pick up item that's five metres away"?
Did they add more levels or areas in the existing levels that give you a reason to use more transformations so that you don't have forms that are completely useless?
In short, did they completely redesign most of the game in this hard mode?

I can believe that the magic balancing and boss patterns could have been fixed but HGH's problems are baked right into the core of the game and can't be fixed with a little tweaking. You'd essentially have to remake the whole campaign.

And I apologise if it seems like I'm being antagonistic towards you. My vitriol is directed towards Wayforward and this game, not towards you.

The first game on GBC is a technical marvel. WayForward was pulling some Rareware level shit for that one.

1/2 genie hero is a soft reboot of the series, so its an okay one to start with (though series veterans were annoyed by this).

I would recommend starting with Shantae GBC, but that is mainly because I'm a purist who likes to start from the beginning.

Of the 4 existing games, Pirate's Curse is best.

that's one of the double edged swords to crowdfunding. if they'd set a budget that included all of the features they wanted, they might have struggled to get funded. you can tell they wanted that $1.1M with the full voice acting and animations and stuff.

but because they didn't rake in the dough like MN9, they had to deliver a finished game with less content.
