This is my favorite movie of all time. I remember buying the special dvd way back then and watching it everyday before I go to school and before I sleep. The music, visuals, characters, all just had me for some reason. I memorized every line and wanted to make that sliding holster. I kept rewatching those special documentary things with Paul Schrader. I love Goodfellas, Raging Bull and all that but Taxi Driver is still the best to me.

The whole movie is a great character analysis how Travis is detached from society. He only sees his world from the view of the Taxi during the night. He seriously starts going off the rocker when he gets rejected by a girl after taking her to date in a porn theater.
Just from this action he starts his personal war against society which should make the viewer realize that Travis has some sort of a disorder or has been left out the normal social conventions thanks to being in the Vietnam war. Him attempting to assassinate the political but failing and going after the pimp is just because of him failing at the former not because he is a hero. The final shot implies that there is something left in him that he can crack anytime.
Also Herrmans soundtrack really supports the film creating this somber tone to the whole thing. This is the most basic level of analysis of the film so be welcome. also i made this in two minutes so tell me if i missed something out

Death Wish is one of the great movies of the 70s imo. Very raw and powerful, and unlike some of the other vigilante movies it inspired, it doesn't make you totally say "yeah, killing bad guys is awesome!" - nor does it give you the catharsis of "now Bronson's gunna get they guys who raped and killed his wife!"

IMO I still think it makes it a little too easy to root for him, though he goes around and provokes people into trying to mug him and he splatters their guts all over the place.

The sequels have different flavors of good/bad.

Death Wish 2 is a pretty vile movie. I... kinda like it, but there's a point where its misogyny and women-hating start to make you feel extremely uncomfortable. Kersey's daughter Caroline starts to recover from her rape... only to be raped again and again! And murdered! And the maid is raped! And has her head bashed in! Call me a "prude" but it's too much slime.

It's one of the closest examples of wide-release grindhouse/exploitation that I think of at the time. I love the soundtrack, though the film itself is like lying face-down in a gutter for 90 minutes.

Death Wish 3 is slower than I remember it after a recent rewatch, but it builds and builds and builds in ridiculousness to be some solid fun entertainment. It is like watching a Capcom beatemup come to life.

Death Wish 4 the Crackdown is... the Crackdown. Pure schlock.

Death Wish 5 I never watched all the way through but this scene is gold. Probably the best in the movie.

I don't think the ending is "a dream" in the sense most people mean. I believe the whole film is "dream-like" or maybe hallucinatory from lack of sleep. There was a great interview with Paul Schrader where he talks about how Taxi Driver doesn't take place in NYC proper, it takes place in a dream of NYC. He goes on to talk about his own isolation, insomnia and addiction problems and so on. To me the whole film is sort of a fever dream

I didn't get Drive. It had a fantastic soundtrack. Some of the shots were breathtaking (the elevator, the getaway, the beach with lighthouse and some others), but as a whole... The second act about corruption is pretty out of nowhere but considering he lied about the fact Luke wasn't aiming his gun at him and seemed willing to surrender but he guns him down anyway says something about how he's a hypocrite because he took down corrupt cops. Third act is definitely about how sins of the father affect the son and we are what we come from. Luke's boy leaving on his bike and going to be by himself to make his own way like his father definitely gave me feels.
