I just finished the series earlier this year. dragged my feet with 999 until I got the first ending, awesome game. Didn't like VLR until later in the game, I was shitting my pants for the last few parts.

Don't listen to the edge lords complaining about how it fell short. As a newcomer to the series you don't have the emotional baggage attached to waiting for years on cliffhangers. It's a decent game with a budget, and time constraint problem. Play it, you'll have fun, shake your head at the characters, and laugh. Try not to have any of the games spoiled for you too.

Were people actually salty about Kyle not showing up? It was the last thing I actually cared about, it felt like a throwaway line in VLR, like Uchi thought he had to justify his existence for the sequel. Clover and Alice's fates are much more disconcerting, since they were ripped from their timeline with no way back, then ZTD comes and goes without a word. (Though, looking at the timeline, they were kidnapped and drugged three days before the Mars Test Site, and since Akane and Sigma were there with memories of VLR they presumably woke them up before they got sent to the moon. The lack of a mention at all still bugs me.)

I felt like I was supposed to be disappointed but I enjoyed every second of it It was the first time I felt something like that, like seeing a clown car crash into a pie truck, you can't help but stare at the catastrophe and enjoy the thing you're witnessing, I don't know man, I really don't know how to explain it, it's too bad people started lashing the game afterwards when they realized it wasn't that good because a blind experience of ZTD is a once in a life time feeling, and I know I'm not the only one that felt that way.

I felt the same way, but I put a lot of it down to how the game gave me hard nostalgia for corny PS2 games like God Hand and Code Veronica. Somehow the graphics really emulated that style.

After playing through VLR on PC when it came out and getting hyped up I tried getting into ZTD, but the contrast of writing and presentation was so huge that I just couldn't stop cringing at every scene.

It's been months now and my memory of VLR's fun-factor is fuzzy at best, so I think I'll go and give Zero Time Dilemma another chance

There's the obvious choices like Ace Attorney and Uchikoshi's Ever VNs.
Hotel Dusk recently got a spiritual successor game called Cold Chase, but if you haven't played Hotel Dusk's sequel, Last Window, I would reccommend checking that out first.
That said, I don't know if Cold Chase is any good.
Professor Layton is a possibility if you like puzzle solving and dumb plot twists.

If I remember correctly, you only directly stare at the water when the lights are off. I'll admit, this one has bothered me, but it's small.

That Dio tells you them when he has no reason to? He's not a perfect henchman; he's arrogant and kind of stupid. I always thought that him telling you the codes reflected his personality. Also, I think it was implied somewhere that brother knew that the AB game was a trap, so he never instructed Dio to be extra careful with the codes or anything like that.

Akane was willing to sacrifice human lives for the success of the project, so it makes sense that she would give people a deadly virus. If your problem is with the science of people not noticing that they're on the moon, I'm really not qualified to know if the explanation is realistic, but it makes enough intuitive sense and the game is science fiction.

999 and VLR are both great in different ways. 999 started out with a simple premise and built up to something much bigger. VLR took the conclusion that 999 established and ran with it as far as possible. I really like the expansiveness of VLR, but I can see how many people prefer the more concise 999.

I actually agree. Had ZTD never existed, at least the series would have ended on a high note, and we would have made our own finales, with a bunch of fan theories and stuff. At least, in my eyes, it would have stayed untainted and a great franchise to recommend to people.

Having to make one of your characters suddenly actively stupid to make the plot progress is terrible writing in my opinion. Not to mention, why would Dio give a different code each time?
This is also the start of the "ah fuck it, let's jump to another timeline lol" trope that I really dislike since it cheapens every "hard" decisions you're supposed to make (that was amped up to eleven in ZTD, making it even worse).

For the moon thing, I can give you that. I guess it kinda make sense in the context. But my gripe is how awfully convenient it is that the virus actually has all the symptoms needed to make people believe they were on the Earth. I always feel like Uchikoshi goes way too far to try to justify everything in his games. I remember him apologizing profusely in a Q&A because he had forgotten some minor plotkey related to Seven or something, that didn't bear any importance on the overall story.
It's been some time since I played the game, but I remember being equally "meh"-ed by the story behind K and Luna as well.

Well yeah, different strokes. I usually like the story more when there is one good twist or idea that is well worked and thought, rather than the pile of concepts they tried to cram in VLR.
Also, I was pretty sure it would be completetly impossible to give a proper ending to the series considering the clusterfuck VLR brought to the table, and ZTD proved me pretty damn right.

There are still some things I don't quite get about the trilogy.

Shifters can't truly die, right? VLR makes it seem like "death" is just a momentary setback, and they can re-enter timelines afterwards. So why did Sigma and Phi break down emotionally when the other dies in ZTD? ZTD was a complete disappointment, but there was so much fun to be had with characters like Carlos and their time travel antics. I played through the first two games just in time for ZTD to come out, so I can understand why people who had been waiting for the conclusion for a long time and seen it be cancelled and revived and all that would feel more strongly about it.
