When fps started up, most gamers thought FPS was for low IQ drones who were of course drawn to extremely simplistic gameplay. Games appealing to the lowest common denominator has been steadily happening ever since.

DOOM is as close to "objectively good" as games get. Even if you don't care for the genre, you have to respect what it did for it, and the impact it had on gaming. Chances are you're probably lacking a lot of context for not having been around when it came out.
