Is it just my associations based on my own childhood, or does anyone else get a somewhat (for lack of a better word) "gloomy" feel from the 6th gen, in contrast to the 5th at any rate?

I guess it would just seem that the 5th gen was really fueled by 90s culture, with games generally being upbeat, colorful, and lighthearted and mascot cartoon characters en vogue, which I guess would reflect the economic prosperity and general relaxed social climate at the time (in this sense, one could argue that the Dreamcast had more in common with the 5th gen than the 6th).

In contrast, the 6th gen is when lots of games started to have dimmer, darker palettes, generally going for more "tough" aesthetics than the prior generation (even in kids' games; just look at the Jak & Daxter series, for example, or how Mega Man started to become more focused on anime drama than ever before). This sort of seems to reflect the machismo culture that arose in the 2000s, as well as (and probably due to) the more sober climate that came about post-9/11 once the paranoia set in and the war began.

I've always argued that anything that could be said about Capcom at a given time could be said about the entire industry at that point, and just compare their mid-late 90s fare (Power Stone, Marvel vs. Capcom, Mega Man Legends, Rival Schools, early and cheesy RE) to what they were doing in the following decade (DMC, Onimusha, Mega Man Zero, Chaos Legion, RE4).

I dunno, I just always feel inclined to play 5th gen/Dreamcast games when it's sunny outside and things are going all right, but generally reach for my PS2 and GameCube when it's overcast and rainy in the middle of a long week.

Nintendo for one went into a renaissance period. Though in the 5th gen they were able to float by on their own games despite the PlayStation trumping them largely due to making third party devs fuck off to the latter, when the PS2 hit and started to blow up as huge as it did, they knew that they had to go into maximum overdrive--not only with first party development, but also and especially second party publishing. Thus, we had franchises that hadn't made it to the west finally being localized (Fire Emblem, Custom Robo), new IPs everywhere (Pikmin, Eternal Darkness, Golden Sun, Kuru Kuru Kururin), and new takes on existing franchises (Metroid Prime, Kirby & the Amazing Mirror).

Even if it didn't work and as a result we got the Wii, at least a bunch of really cool games came out of it back then.

The real reason why the sixth gen was great is because we got games.
A huge amount of games for every taste, games with good mechanics, good looking games(not necessarily technically impressive, just good looking in general), fun games, games with great stories, new mechanics, shovelware which could still be a bit fun to play, relatively bad games which still had that something making them unique and somehow still enjoyable despite the flaws.
The graphics weren't too advanced yet and we couldn't bitch too much on how real the games looked or which effects or resolutions we had and what not, so the entire scene, both developers and games, focused more on the gaming aspect of games.

It didn't matter which console you preferred, you got what you wanted and had a huge choice on what games to get for the console you picked up.

I honestly never got the PS2 hype. Maybe it was a thing where you had to be there at the time but I grew up with a gamecube and got an Xbox in 2005. Kingdom Hearts 1&2, FFX10 and 12, Silent Hill 3 (played SH2 on the Xbox, found it better due to the flashlight not being jaggy as all hell), MGS3, Killzone, all the Jak games, Most of the R&C games, Katamari, and most of the Sly Cooper games. Never tried Ace Combat. I played the demo of one of the most recent Armored Cores and liked it but never picked up the full game. I played Okami at a friends house and never got passed the 8 hour long tutorial. I heard Godhand is good but mostly from people who loved Bayonetta and I wasn't a huge fan, I thought Bayo was good but is massively overhyped. ZOE was fun from was I played at a friends but never got around to ever picking it up myself. I would pick it up but the HD remaster is shit apparently.
