Or.. lets just talk about Dragons Dogma anyway, I love DD threads and it's been a while.

I always liked the Magic Archer class, and I never really got the hang of the mystic knight. Maybe I'll give that class a try next time.

Play the game without changing gear, without doing any side quests and running past all trash mobs that you can avoid.

You'll eventually run into a hard stop where you do 0 damage to enemies because the game uses linear stats and not percentual ones.

If you don't grind levels and gear you can't finish this game.
It may not feel like it because the animations are flashy and you perhaps even have fun with the wannabe-Shadow-of-the-Colossus gameplay, but this is not a skill based game at all.

Also the fact that you can carry a shit ton of healing items that you can use from a paused menu defeats all "difficulty" there is.

It was alright, but not nearly as good as it was hyped up to be.
Same with RDR for example.
Shame it'll never get a proper fleshed out sequel though.

There's a mod that unlocks all items for all classes, so you can equip a warhammer and a bow on the same character. Makes playing warrior way less tedious

I liked fighter because with a good shield you're practically unstoppable and you have on-demand invulnerability with dragon's maw and by using swords you have a great selection of elemental weapons

I don't regret playing it. It's a game that has a unique feel and can be pretty at times,
but for me the complete dumpsterfire of a story, the dumb mechanics and the disjointed game design that makes it feel like an MMO framework re-purposed as a single-player game just ended up frustrating me.

If you just want to dick around in a generic medieval fantasy scenario with some cool looking animations though, go fot it.

My only issue with the game is that stat scaling is horseshit for certain classes even though they specialize in a certain category. For example, you'll do horrendous damage as a magic archer if you didn't play for the longest time as a sorcerer to boost magic damage stat, since MA has complete horseshit scaling for it.

I don't know what Gothic in particular has anything to do with it.

But even back in 2000 the Gothic devs knew that making an rpg entirely reliant on gear and levels is dumb.

In Gothic and Dark Souls you always at least a small amount of damage.
This means that even if you don't get every power item you can still finish the game.
Sure, grinding gear and levels makes these games a lot easier, but it's not required.
The only thing you actually need is your own skill.

Not in DD however.
You absolutely have to switch to better gear and level up in order to progress.
Skill does pretty much nothing.
And if you've got trouble you can always just grind healing herbs.

you can only carry as much as your weight allows, and even an infinite amount of healing items wont let you kill something much higher level than you as you will be doing shit for damage to it. tough enemies are also capable of one/two shotting you unexpectedly or disabling you with status effects too.

For regular golems, you just unequip your staff and punch them

I find pausing to look through the menu to be a huge bore. I know people dislike Anodyne, but it usually ends up being significantly more engaging. I always keep about three of each type of curative, but I save them for a bailout.

I tried this out when I started feeling like fighter had too many absurd limitations. Had to keep switching out to daggers for platforming shenanigans and to the bow for flyers and fruit trees. It got silly. Moving Castle sucks.

I played the PS3 and PC version and the frame rate is all I noticed. Looks like a 1:1 port otherwise, no bells and whistles added unless you're talking about mods.

I like DD but the game doesn't look that great and the animations are mostly bad.
