does ff14 actually let you just be a person? I've been looking for an MMO that just lets me be a humble person doing dumb tasks. WoW tries so hard to be epic and make you le commander that changes the tides, it's boring.
>>
>>379409525
Outside of the main story quest, yes.

The main story quest itself is gay and you can skip every cutscene. If you skip the entire main story you will basically feel like you're just an average joe.

Also, the crafting system is top notch and highly addictive.

I don't want to be an average joe

by all means have the option

But I don't play games to re-live real life. I play them to experience fantasy situations I'd never actually experience otherwise.

I want my characters to be beautiful, charismatic, brave, competent. I want examples I can strive for, not mediocrity that only exists to tell me I'm "just fine how I am"

I don't want to be mediocre. I want to be the best. I want to see what the best are like. I want to emulate that. I want to experience it first-hand in my fantasies so I can know what I'm missing out on.

That's the whole point of a fantasy.
Not to tell me I'm good enough already. I don't want my ego massaged, I want to be challenged.
>>
>>379409525
I play XIV and will tell you that the entire game is about you being the legendary chosen hero. You'll need to slog through the entire set of 300 something story quests before you can start up crafting or gathering. The story is generic chosen hero safes world. They are selling a $25 item to skip the story up to the start of the new expansion.

Crafting is fun but can get a bit tedious as you'll need to level every crafting job to the ARR level cap of 50 to get all the crafting skills. They all share gear so it isn't too terrible. You'll need to fully finish the storyline as certain areas of stormblood are unlocked from quests if you want to do gathering.
>>
Want the perfect MMO for a true roleplayer?

Pretty much just take Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash and put it in vidya form.
>>
>>379410152
>Not to tell me I'm good enough already. I don't want my ego massaged, I want to be challenged.
Isn't that the whole point, to be an average joe being challenged, instead of the chosen one having your ego massaged

See, that's why I like playing Runescape so much. Most of the questlines you're either just helping someone, fixing your own fuck up, or some other ridiculous shit. At no point does it ever feel like your the "chosen one". Most of the time it just feels like you stumble into the shit that quests have you do.

>Sure, EVE Online has its Luke Skywalkers—the hot shots leading vast armadas and flying death-defying missions to turn the tide of PvP wars—but they got there by fighting, lying, stealing, befriending, or buying their way through a simulated society. Becoming a hero is meaningful in EVE because the community itself decides what's heroic.
And he's right. You want to be a hero? Earn it.

>>
>>379413361
You arnt the chosen hero. You are just one of many warriors of light. Its not clones of yourself, its other characters in the game as well as all the other players.
>>
>>379412967
Pretty much. At some point they decided to make a character creation system, and intended to give you the option to walk around on stations and everything.
The problem is just that the players don't give a shit about that. They just want more numbers to crunch, so the devs abandoned that part and just left the character creation system in.

Hell, they even removed the jukebox (in-game music player, included a lot of really nice ambient music tracks as well).

So don't even bother downloading the game to make your waifu, because you won't ever see her.

Same actually goes for Elite Dangerous.

Thing is, the vast majority of girls and gays are perfectly fine with dolling up their female characters as well.
Games don't need extensive male features, they just need a good selection of fashionable outfits/styles for the girls, not just plate bikinis.

That said, the Vindictus guys do look pretty nice when customized.

>>
>>379413571

You understand "slightly less chosen one" is still pretty much the same as being "the chosen one", it's just sucking your dick slightly less to make sense of the other players, and even then the storyline CAN'T be played with other players. So they are hardly ever even recognized as something that exists, except by the mother crystal. And that happens once. In the entire game.

Exactly. Making all female outfits conservative is exactly the opposite problem of having women run around in only skimpy outfits. Everyone should have the opportunity to run around in full armor or dressed as sluts as they like. Even WoW had one or two good armor sets down at level 20-30 and then you had to spend 40 more levels dressed as some kinda clown with mismatched everything

They might not need them, but they are certainly appreciated. I played Vindictus extensively purely because I used it as a husbando generator, and put up with the pay 2 win garbage for it, aside from the good action gameplay.

I will definately not touch a game without a good male character generation tool. I need a fine dress-up tool for both genders; and it's ultimately what drove me away from BDO.
Could have gone through all the shit and grind for multiple characters had they simply bothered to not make the character creation just a very limited version of Vindictus', which is honestly sinful giving how dated Vindictus is to begin with and how much they ripped off from it.
They could have tried a bit more knowing there was little else to go on with the game on the long run.

Kind of, but really, the permadeath and REAL organizations ( not slapdash red team with quirky name ) would make this quite a bit different. GTA:O is ultimately about shooting each other in the face while driving cars around. It's fun, but it's not a persisent MMO world like EVE.

I tried BDO as well but it felt clunkier than Vindictus and I didn't really like the style much.
Vindictus may be old, but the gameplay is solid and the outfits (for males and females) is impressive.
Sadly, everything else about the game is pretty bad, and BDO just felt like it was only the bad parts of Vindictus, with some more bad parts thrown in.

Anyway, what other husbando games are there? I've always been about waifu generators myself but I want to try my hand at making husbandos as well.

Weirdly decent article.
But yea, too many of these MMOs are too focused on some stupid story that you're meant to experience, so EVERY player ends up being the superhuman badass world saver, and at that point it just becomes idiotic when EVERY player is meant to be "humanity's last hope" or whatever.
Which is hilarious considering MUDs and older MMOs had already addressed this problem, then Everquest (and eventually WoW) had to make it all about this saving the world shit.

>Sadly, everything else about the game is pretty bad, and BDO just felt like it was only the bad parts of Vindictus, with some more bad parts thrown in.

That about covers it up.
Vindictus without any storyline to hold it together, worse gameplay, and an open world full of enemies that provide absolutely no challenge but are simply raw walking level walls.
>but muh pvp
I sure do love me being one-shotted at random by invisible people with p2w camouflage in a perma-pvp stats that I can do nothing in any way whatsoever because they have better gear earned purely through RNG.
No redeeming qualities.

>Anyway, what other husbando games are there?
Not many, really. Someone might say FFXIV, but there is no real MAKING of a design there so much as hoping one of the mostly premade things clicks your fancy.
GW2 has a very decent character creation tool, assuming the kind of graphics are your thing, I guess. Tera sort of work, but. Ehh.

honestly eve has what you're looking for, it's a fucking great game if you're looking for the financial/manufacturing/economics side of things. i played it during my business undergrad and i came to the conclusion that ALL business undergrads should be forced to play that fucking game.. i learned more in it than i did in 4 years of undergrad, at least with regard to "general concepts." obviously eve lacks a lot of the complex financial transactions that the real world integrally builds on top of, but for the manufacturing optimization and shipping simulation you can't go wrong

>TL;DR:

In terms of overall registered users, yeah sure. But I think active players or subs is a better way of doing it. RS never went past 120k. Since my initial point is about today's MMO market, it's not even close to top 5 (WoW, FFXIV, ESO, GW2, B&S, BDO) does better than EVE and TORtanic atm though.
>>379415103
>The concept of mass appeal means that nothing that has specified and become niche and very refined can be popular.
WoW got popular from refining things, Beatles got popular from refining various musical ideas of their time, Avatar became best selling movie by refining tech new at the time, etc. Usually the innovator is never as popular as the refiner.
>Popularity and money produced are typically, but not always, inversely proportional to quality.
Reeks of bitterness and childishness. There must be SOME reason why nobody wants to play that one thing you think is good when the difference is that large.

Yeah I gave GW2 a shot (the husbando part at least) and I appreciate the style of it. Didn't really come up with anything good looking in FFXIV, but everything about that game makes me wonder if I somehow got a totally different version from the rest of the world because it's one big disappointment all around.

TERA does go with the shirtless/exposed abs style pretty well but it's hard to make really nice characters, both males and females.

More games need Saints Row level of customization, really.

This, tired of everybody having their own little story about how they're 'the chosen one'. One thing I've seen a lot of is on survival game servers like rust, reign of kings, and player driven things like Mount and Blade's persistant world mod, a lot of players mainly kids, choose to be serfs/slaves that you give orders to do. Since I'd play in a group, these people would come up asking if we'd take him in, then they become our servant and go farm shit and RP their role.

Not everyone wants to be the hero. The world needs ditch diggers too. (it also helps the ones who do play the hero to stand out in comparison.)

Do you not understand how mass appeal works?
Let me put it simply.
In order to make the most money, you have to appeal to the average person.
In order to appeal to the average person you have to BE average.
Not good, not great, just average.
Because good is subjective, and what some people find amazing others are going to hate.
Dragon's dogma is a good example.

honestly man, you can try out all of the core systems with a F2P sub (the trial??? i haven't tried F2p personally). it locks you out of high level ships and skills, but you won't get there anyways if you're just starting. it really gives you a feel for the game imo.

obviously as you play more you have more opportunities to expand your operations and get into crazier stuff, but you can do some really fun stuff on the trial. i recommend "exploring" in nullsec, which is like flying around looking for these randomly spawned "treasure chests" in player owned systems while avoiding gankers, pirates, and security forces. you can make big $$$ and do it alone, and it's really fun to boot

The following isn't even nostalgia, I am well aware that RO has always been a giant, pointless grindfest and I get that I was simply more open to those back in the day. (Even though I still would play the shit out of a rebooted vanilla RO)
But that MMO did some good shit on its economy and class design nothing else has managed to replicate (and its new owners have made sure to violate to death.)

>Mite b cool.
>Unique if anything else
>Go out of tutorial
>Have to walk my way to Alberta

>Unaware there was a fucking direct ship to it
>Oh shit auto-aggro high level enemies
>Run like the winds
>Reach Alberta
>Have to run all the way to some other sandnigger city to deliver a package
>Christ no ship this time
>Repeat process
>Merchanthood!
>Oh god I am so weak what do I fucking do
>At least I have this cart
>Walk around prontera checking what shit's selling lately
>Stems?
>Search up nearby area for easy stem farming
>Painfully farm stems one axe swing at a time from tentacle rape radish things
>Set up my garbage-tier stem shop on the street corner of a non-overcrowded spot

That's pretty much what I've felt through it myself. I do not understand the amount of hype it generates.
And this is not a "I am a bitter old man and games are unfun!! >(((((" /v/-tier shit, but more like... In a practical sense, I sincerely do not understand why people have grown as attached to it as they have. FFXI and WoW had their reasons to survive despite their flaws.
FFXIV seems to do everything wrong, from game pacing, to unrewarding progress, to altogether dull gameplay and just terrifyingly weird character models with cero design qualities and somehow it manages to stay afloat and with burning passion from its crowd.
Happy that people have a place they enjoy to play in, don't get me wrong, but I just don't understand it.

This would be a great post, if it actually made sense in this context. WoW has the most content to do of any MMO, while offering it's specialization point (endgame PvE challenges) in piss easy versions and the hardest the genre has to offer versions. WoW isn't on top because it's average, it's on top because it offers something for casuals, regular players, AND hardcore players.

This isn't just about mass appeal, it's about an entirely different approach and people's opinion to that.

You could do all kinds of amazing things in Fonline.
I also used to run a thieves guild that employed pickpockets in hub areas and tricked people into revealing things they shouldn't to rob their tents or ambush them and their friends.
Not really lucrative of course, but a lot of fun and we gained quite the infamy.

Unfortunately that's all in the past as most of the fun stuff has been "fixed" after endless whining from all the players who don't know what roleplaying is.

Long gone are the days were GMs would put you in prison for 10 minutes after you committed a crime, so other players can laugh at or insult or throw cow shit at you.

You can still hold stand-up comedy competitions in the bars though. At least that they couldn't take away.

Well put. I refuse to believe the waifus alone manage to keep people playing (especially because only the humans and cats look good).
There's no real sense of exploration, a very bland art style (aside from some traditional FF influences), very basic combat and crafting, and downright uninteresting rewards for playing.

The weirdest thing is that they fucked it up with FFXIV originally, then didn't really do all that much better when they launched it again, but for some reason people suddenly did take to it.

In MMOs of yore becoming powerful and/or rich needed actual effort and communication between players. Average Joe is where everyone starts and can be, people can find their niches, whatever...
But if you wanted to be more than that? You better buckle up for a real adventure and if you actually succeed all of the player base will know your name.

This is what fags like you and devs don't get, average Joe creates the stakes and makes the spectacular person actually amazing. Even the average Joe actually has to set up his shop and communicate between players if he wants his fishing business to succeed.

I really wish I liked MMOs more than I do. By all accounts I love the idea of grouping together with thousands of players to explore vast fantasy landscapes and have great adventures.

But generally speaking they're too mechanical. Ive played DnD for years and I understand a game can't offer that level of insane freedom but at the same time because it's a game there's a very clear BEST way to do just about everything that will no doubt be organized into spread shits that even if you don't follow yourself everyone else will be.

Your hunter or archer or mage just becomes an exact carbon copy of someone elses and yes it does depend on individual skill but no player really feels unique

I feel like they missed the mark describing SWG. The Cantina's and Med-centers had plenty of people playing the game their own way. Tumblers letting medics practice, doctors outside spaceport dispensing buffs with their Droid for tips. Scouts and Rangers setting up camps in the wilderness for hunting groups. They weren't stealing Death Star plans, they were killing giant lizards for hides. Smugglers could hide spice from storm troopers, or shoot their way out, hoping no Imperials popped into pvp mode and wastes them (if the deadly troops didn't first)

Sure you COULD become a Jedi, but the grind was so brutal it felt like an accomplishment... Then they made it a starting class... So much wasted potential...

I have my own reasons for disliking FFXIV, but this is kinda disingenuous because BLM skill usage in FFXI was just spam whatever nuke the enemy would be potentially weak to along with potential buff/debuff. The enemies also aren't as mechanically intricate as FFXIV's. FFXIV BLM has the same rotation for each fight, but more intricate rotation with changed timings based on what the enemy will do. FFXI's idea of hard was a simple boss with so much HP that it can take hours to kill. FFXIV's idea of hard is a boss that requires near perfect coordination and skill with multiple phases each that has multiple things happening at once that need to be circumvented.

You're missing the point dude. The amount of effort/work to go from "like everyone else" to "Server superstar" is the same amount of work you can put into real life and be successful, which actually has more meaning.

Yet, not everybody is. A lot of people are just fucking average in real life. And if you design a game where you are average unless you are exceptional, it just mimics reality. Basically why put so much effort in a game to achieve what you could have in life?

It's pointless. Games are fun, and fantasy is fantasy. Having it be achievable through easy/quick means is part of the charm for them.

Fuck your buckling down and pulling up your bootstraps in videogames. They aren't meant to be realistic in that regard, there's enough bootstrap pulling bullshit you have to do in life
>>
>>379423000

That seems extremely reachful. FFXI's bosses are entirely dependant on proper coordination with everyone in your party, not only for timing of add kiting, to AOE ranges, MP/HP management through a lengthy fight, aggro-management and a lot more that simply doesn't take place in FFXIV because what you avoid is the boss' gimmick, and not the actual gameplay related factors.
Giant death circles of doom or "deal enough damage before your whole party gets wiped" shenanigans aren't the same as "being coordinated"; it's just having prior knowledge of what the fuck is going on or not / being retarded or not.
Ultimately has nothing to do with being COORDINATED; it has to do with people doing the macguffin correctly or wiping to it.

I played like 4 Years of Ultima Online, some Silkroad, couple years in EVE Online and alot of Wurm Online.
Funnily, all 4 of those you have an impact as a player. People can curse your name and your presence alone can make them shudder if you do it the right way.
Todays MMOs are all boring and there's no real player interaction outside of "lfg" and raids.
The most fun I had was holding people ransom in EVE and raiding a Corp bank after they trusted me enough.
Ultima was fun for breaking down houses. Harrassing others, etc.
Silkroad had some engaging PVP when raiding player trade routes
AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON WURM.
I wish there was a better Wurm Online out there.
>>
>>379407338

A good article for a change.

Hate this fucking shitty uninspired design where everyone gets to be the chosen one in a game with fucking millions of people playing. But seeing as how every MMO nowadays is a glorified single player game with mute people running in the background, instead of being a social and cooperative experience with atrition and focused on an adventure filled with moments of risk-vs-reward ponderation, I'm not really surprised they are shoehorning stories that would only work in a single player game in this garbage genre. Even the itemization from these games reveal the shitty mindset since everything is character-bound nowadays, which makes no fucking reason whatsoever.

Every MMO out there is the exact same shit. You're the special snowflake, now rush this padded out quest chain up to the very last level and do the same scripted dungeon that is also instanced because we want to create safe spaces where no one can be bothered by other players so you can grind for gear in order to run the dungeon that you're already fully able to run. Don't forget to come back in a few months when the next patch makes your current gear lose all its value so you can do it again!

They should downright delete these fucking shitty quest chains and let you level up however you want, either through killing whichever mobs you wanted or crafting shit, being a thief or even a murderer, an alchemist, a store owner, things like that. And no you fucking faggots, Final Fantasy XIV isn't this game, it's just a shitty wow-wannbe that we already have by the thousands. It does have a nice occupation system but the game is the still the exact same quest-chain instanced dungeon grind garbage where everybody gets to be a champion and never dispute shit with other players/get pked.

Pretty sure both of you are missing the point.
Both extremes are stupid. "Struggle until you have to make a life out of the game to make it worthwhile" is as bad as "lmao shining star so I can forget life existuuuus kawaii chosen one time escapism!!!"

The point is to give choices and freedom so people can immerse themselves in all ways to a degree.
A storyline to follow that gets you higher up if you want to go for it, or remains grounded if you prefer it that way.
A world you can interact with beyond "push F to gather" and "Push B to kill", and actually becomes a pleasant and entertaining activity even if it is something basic.

You personally may enjoy some sort of low-effort-high-reward shit because your life is horrible and tedious, other people may simply not.
Or maybe exactly because they do, they'd like to live a version of their lives with slightly modified things, where they can immerse themselves in a setting with different lore, and fantastic things, without having to undergo a task so vastly different from themselves and their own personality they can feel no attachment to the writting whatsoever.

TL:DR
Choices good.
Railways shit bad.
Utter sandboxing shit bad.

But the bosses attacks ARE part of the gameplay mechanics. All that other stuff you do in FFXIV as well. Deal enough damage before your party gets wiped? You can't do that in FFXIV since it's dependent on dodging shit a lot but in FFXI this is kinda what you're expected to do. the fact that you think having to ACTIVELY dodge stuff is sheer prior knowledge and not the simple straight forward mechanics of FFXI show how little you know about either game.

No kiting? Coordination in FFXIV? Dude actually play the game before you shit on it or at least know what you're talking about. FFXIV has a lot of bosses like A8S where it becomes a multi boss fight and kiting is super important. Coordination isn't the spam and occasional switch of FFXI, it's the insane amount of mobility required for the more modern MMO mechanics that are in FFXIV.
>>
>>379424413

Then that is understandable, and I agree with the sentiment.
It is what made FFXI hard to keep up with. It may have been chill and enjoyable to do with friends, but lord help you if you didn't play as often as they did.

Kind of but not quite. When they were trying to add the "Walking-in-stations" stuff all those years ago the game was broken as shit. Lots of stuff was really poorly balanced, sov mechanics were terrible and the game was well overdue for a rewrite.

The community were vocal about this so CCP changed their minds, put "walking in stations" stuff on the backburner and instead spent 3-4 something years balancing ship classes, re-doing module tiers, changing some core game/sov mechanics, getting rid of shitty POS code and replacing it with Citadels and adding DX11/12 support with a new graphics engine.

In the end it's paid off for them. Maybe one day they'll add more on the walking in stations bit, maybe add a common room for your corp members to hang out in or space bars but for now we just have to wait and see.

Mabinogi is the only game that managed to capture that feeling for me
I was jealous of people above me, and they were so much stronger it almost felt out of reach

But if you keep at it, you steadily make progress constantly
There's no level cap but at some point you're more than strong enough, and only keep getting better the more you play

So I recommend that game, though the weeaboo graphics might turn you off

Biggest negative despite what I just said is that the game hosts CONSTANT events, and you really do feel like you miss out if you don't do them...can burn someone out fast. But it's a very unique MMO, genuine freedom. You don't have to fight anything to level up, though of course you do level faster by doing combat

also not all scams are spamming local chat in Jita. Everyone and everything is so untrustworthy in that game that one guy is literally Space Famous for being trustworthy. There's no such things as friends in Eve, just mutually beneficial contracts.

A lot of newb Eve players think that the game is run by the dozens of Corp/Alliance bosses that own space but realistically it's the handful of incredulously wealthy station traders that call the real shots.

Goons (Something Awful forums) learned this the hard way. After 6 something years of bullying 60% of the game into working for them a half-dozen anonymous wealthy station traders basically bought everyone under them to kick in their shit.

Ah yes, I heard that once, and I completly get it.

>Anon, it sounds like you are just a public nuisance, not an "engaging antagonist to other's playtime."
That's part of the fun.
Not him, but I remember back when HellMOO was more popular and had actual open PVP, there were assholes hated by everyone who would just go out and fuck up as many new players as they possibly could before the NPC police forces could ever even react.
Another tactic was booby-trapping popular newbie grind spots or even rest spots with explosives just to be dicks.
Eventually people and admins literally put fucking bounties on their heads and started rewarding people for killing assholes.
There's nothing wrong with a game where you can get ganked by someone way stronger than you, that's the point of creating a game that relies heavily on player interaction, and having that interaction allows organic systems and gameplay to develop on their own.
When you make a game where YOU can be the big bad cunt that makes life hell for everyone else, that can be genuinely enjoyable.
It can also be easily exploited to the point where the devs strip it out from the game and heavily restrict PVP.

I really wish this stupid meme would die. First of all, Eve recently implemented a free-to-play option. You're limited to the three smaller ship classes but it's more than sufficient to get started in the game without paying, and you can easily make enough to buy a subscription with in-game currency. Secondly, the whole "second job/spreadsheets" thing is the most overblown shit ever. While it's helpful to have automated spreadsheets for calculating profits when you're doing station trading or manufacturing they're completely optional. I make billions of isk a month (a sub is about 1.3b per month right now) just by spending 30 minutes a day updating my market orders and manufacturing jobs on an alt I keep at the main trade hub, no spreadsheets used. Anything more than that I make goes to having fun blowing up shit on my main.

No. Your character's skills do have an impact on the effectiveness of your ship but once you have all the basic skills trained the difference is in the 5-10% range which is more than made up for by skillful piloting, counter-fitting, etc. For example recently I killed someone who had been playing much longer than me who was flying an Eris (tier 2 destroyer worth about 50m just for the ship, no modules included) with a Kestrel (tier 1 frigate worth about 5-10m fully fitted) because he was fitted with short-range blasters and I kept him at range with a web, afterburner, and warp scrambler. Here's a video that exemplifies the importance of skillful manual piloting:

They recently redid the tutorial and although it follows the stupid "you is da hero" shtick this thread complained about (It's the only instance of it in the game, though) they made it much more accessible. With it now having a free-to-play option that isn't time limited there's no reason not to at least try it and see if it's your cup of tea.

if they're not themepark mmo's they're often stuff like planetside 2, where the dev's really didn't get some of the design decisions with the original planetside,

and they copied battlefield-esque classes, rather than a more flexible-inventory system
>>
>>379431656
Oh right. What's the afk stuff about, anon? Do I have to wait before I actually get to play so that my character can touch himself and learn stuff?
>>
>>379410152
The point isn't to emulate real life. It's to keep the game interesting by making you just a part of the world.
You SHOULD be able to a powerful character that has a huge influence on the world. But that should be because you're a really good player than invested time into the game and its community.
Not because you spent 3 days questing to capped then had the game stroke your ego and tell you that you're CHAD THUNDERCOCK, SLAYER OF GODS AND DESTROYER OF PUSSY because you cleared the same easy premade content that everyone else and their mother did as well.
