Now hear me out, slideshow infodump cutscenes are fucking awful and they show up throughout the series so its hard to single out 4 for something theyve been doing wrong from the start. Aside from that the acted out cutscenes are much more to the point and advance this journey of the end of snakes life. Its trying to pull you at every turn into watching everything come unraveled for this character youve followed for 20 somesuch years. Shadow moses manages to not be cheap by actually engaging the player in small ways like the memory thing with otocon or piloting the old busted rex. The game stopped worrying about sensible continuity and bent every story element towards telling this story about snake. You may not enjoy the particular story but i feel they were very effective at telling it and trying to tug at heart strings

I'm glad I finally managed to find someone saying MGS4 was great. I got introduced to the series with MGS4, stopped half-way through act 2 and went off to get the older games. Played through the main series and then restarted MGS4 from the beginning. Things came together and it seemed like it was a hectic, but good balance of finishing the story of Metal Gear Solid and the story of Snake.

Then MGSV came out.

A lot of Gen 7 games, especially the later ones, ran like complete and total garbage even after making tons of sacrifices to visual fidelity. Games were never even hitting 30 FPS anymore, were running at sub-720p resolutions, and ran with textures compressed as far as they could possibly be. I really have no problems with games from this era being remastered, it was a terrible time.

You can call it cheap playing off nostalgia but the game does a good job with its references to previous points and that fearure where just tapping the button to see flashbacks may seem simple but its a genius easy way to bring the players mind back to all of their own memories throughout mgs.it manages to constantly remind you this is a journey youve been on for a long time while simultaneously not being pushy about it. Little things like that matter in a game but ive always been huge on the "its the little things that count" line of thought

Yeah, but someone has to warn you that it takes a huge departure from what you're probably used to in the first 4 games. It's story is conveyed via audio logs only, the cutscenes are more random goings on around MB (there's still story cutscenes, just not giant long ones with stock government footage over exposition dumps) and gameplay takes the center stage.
