Jrpgs are more mainstream now than ever. The ultra moeblob waifushit games are more niche than other jrpgs, but jrpgs as a whole are less niche now than they were then. And niche waifu games are nothing new (see: Thousand Arms).

JRPGs are a product of hardware limitation. Once we had consoles and computers that could do so much more, people started to move away from them.

And the main reason why is because they're boring. They're just menu navigators. There's no depth or skill or strategy involved. The entire JRPG mechanic was innovated and maximized to its fullest potential decades ago.

That's why modern JRPGs play exactly the same as they used to in the 90s. They add fancy animations and timers (FF13, etc) to mask the fact that they're just turn-based menu simulators at their core. Modern JRPGs lean entirely on the presentation layer nowadays instead of actual gameplay, because there isn't any.

The genre was always niche in the west until FF7, which sold partly because of its technological marvels. Nowadays, all the condolikids play are military shooters.

It's funny that people keep parroting this as though it's true. Nips were making action rpgs before turn-based. Even into the "golden age" of jrpgs you have games like Terranigma and King's Field that were among the best Japanese made rpgs on their respective dated, limited systems, at the same time that you also had turn-based jrpgs thriving on those systems. Turn-based jrpgs were made because people liked them, it's as simple as that. If they didn’t, every game would have been like Terranigma, Mana, Ys, Tales, etc.
