Why is this series so shilled over here?
>>
>>379370747
Because it's a good series
>>
It's one of the best JRPG series, it's fun, it feels good

it's like saying, "Why does everyone recommend getting pussy"
>>
>>379370908
but I thought /v/ is gay
>>
>>379370747
the real reason is because of its le hardcore gameplay half based on luck. they see this as challenging amongst most games because you either have to use buffs/debuffs or just have luck. the story makes it as a weaboo fantasy with le random demon and edgy crazy xD stuff in it.
>>
>>379370747

Why does anything bitching about weeaboos feels like trying to deflect their own nerdy shit at this point?
They're often based on Western and South Asian themes, conceptual God and Satan/Lucifer are often the big bads, what part is weeaboo other than

I finally started it up after being a persona only fag for years. It's nice I miss the coziness that games like 4 had, but the writing feels much more confident and the game is very much less hand holdy.
>>
>>379376019
I'm planning on getting either 4A after being in the same boat as you
I would get 4 first but its E shop only in Europe and E shop prices are always shit
>>
>>379370747
Personally I love the series because it's mostly pure gameplay. The dialogues are not intrusive and the constant change and customization of party members keep thing fresh. I'm also a mithology fag so that helps too.
>>
>>379370747
>over here?
What where the fuck are you from? Reddit?
That game is shilled because it is still the best SMT there is and everything after has been a shitty half assed copy that brought nothing new

All affinities did was turn people to hama and mudo in the first half of the game until they become negligible - affinities don't affect press turn weaknesses which is the only reason people fuse elemental weaknesses for
they need more physical spell types or to create some dual types like Grandia did

yes, but you're still using a shit ton of mp for negligible damage: in many cases it's better to just pass or use a different attack, so it's kind of a wasted slot.
>>
>>379375887
That is one of the worst tattoo designs I have ever seen.
>>
>>379370747
Because it's perfect for /v/'s "hardcore" crowd.

It's not as braindead as trash like FF or DQ, yet it isn't nearly as complex as other series like SaGa, it's kind of an underdog but it isn't truly niche like Metal Max, it's got some nice role playing and route systems but it's still extremely simplistic compared to series like Growlanser or Langrisser, it's the perfect middle ground for /v/.

It's a good series though, don't get me wrong, with a nice main theme based around the world's various mythos and cosmologies and an actual RPG series as that, but it's not what /v/ makes it out to be, especially when they tell you shit like
>>379374561

>>
>>379380475
>How complex does SaGa get?
Depends on the games, the GB trilogy is fairly simplistic, the SNES Romancing trilogy becomes a lot meatier, especially Romancing SaGa 2, Frontier goes back to the GB trilogy but mixes it with the Romancing ruleset, Frontier 2 polishes Frontier's new standard systems while reintroducing old GB standards like weapon durability and also adding many other things like channeling which later became staples, Unlimited is on another plane of existence from RPGs and would require a thread of its own to be properly explained but it did polish and add many things that would be used later, Minstrel Song is basically a Best of the Best remake of the first Romancing game that adds and polishes most of what used to be in the series until that point while also introducing many new things, the DS remakes do more or less the same thing to SaGa 2 and SaGa 3 but are much simpler, Scarlet Grace is another Unlimited in spirit in the sense that it does things its own way but also uses many revisited systems from previous games and makes a few elements less complex than most other games, mostly because they wouldn't work with the new main system so they had to be redesigned completely.

If you want the most complex games, Unlimited, Minstrel Song are the most complex ones mechanically, Romancing SaGa 2 and Scarlet Grace are the most complex when it comes to non linearity, routes and cast, Frontier 2 is the one that requires the most in terms of long term planning since the game is entirely made up of points of no returns so it forces you to maximize your yields more than other entries, all the rest varies.

Meh by mid to late game that damage is so small you can practically ignore it
>>
JRPGs are already an awful genre when it comes to game mechanics, but the only ones that aren't based on braindead grinds is SMT. SMT games are usually smart enough to realize how big of a part grinding plays in JRPGs, and works to make it as engaging as possible. Which is why you have the Press turn system and its precursors/successors which increase tactical mechanical options given to the player. It's one of the few JRPGs where buff/debuffs actually make enough of a difference in the longrun to always have them on for big fights. Enemies aren't just boring fodder, but also capable of hurting you a lot and you have to think, figure out the best way to stop them using the previous two mentioned things while also taking into account any special attributes that they may have. Negotiating and fusions add a whole new depth to managing both the party while also potential enemies in a battle. Within the games themselves this further extends to level design where they are smart enough to realize that the JRPG formula isn't conducive to vertical level design at all so they go all out on the horizontal aspect with clever labyrinths filled with all sorts of items, teleporters, effects, etc.

JRPGs have some of the most boring and straightforward gameplay in gaming. SMT understands the limitations and qualities of a JRPG thus works to optimize those particular aspects of them instead of trying to be something else that ends up being inferior.

Affinities are a big factor in the damage you are doing AND recieving. Alice gets completely shat by physical damage unless she drains/repel/nulls it. Instead a demon with +5 fire affinity gets really low fire damage even if he isn't resistant to it. At a first glance they seem to only affect spell costs, but in truth they are your defensive stuff, and that's why they are so hard to power up (you literally must grind fiends for them)

>>
>>379385084
Affinities in IVA have absolutely nothing to do with the damage you receive. They are literally the exact same as the +X you get on the MC's skills by repeatedly upgrading the skill. They simply make their respective skills stronger and/or cheaper.
>>
>>379375562
I hope for SMT HD that Atlus uses both skill inheritance rules and skill affinities.

>>
>>379385352
They have zero to do with the damage you receive. Someone with +7 physical and physical resist will take the exact same damage as someone with -5 physical and physical resist as long as their stats are the same.

>damage you are doing AND recieving

>Spoiler

It's the Deep Sea of JRPGs, it's not for everyone.
It takes many basic core mechanics and conventions from previous games, such as multiple MCs, non linear gameplay, sparking, channelling and so on but everything else is really its own world.
Imagine a game where every actor, enemy or party members, has unlimited HP, there's no WP or TP like previous games, characters don't grow at all unless you finish a main quest and you need to apply panels, which are awarded to you based on what every single character did during a quest, the map is basically a huge chessboard in which you can interact in various ways like classic tabletop RPGs(there's even Detect spells which work more or less like D&D), all spell can be casted outside of battles and they have a completely different effect on the map, there's no random ecounters and all enemies have their own behaviours, much like previous SaGa games, but in this one they introduced ecology, which means that when you kill monsters you actually interact with the food chain, making some monsters stronger or weaker if you kill their predator or prey, some monsters might also become nearly extict as a result, while other families thrive and evolve, then there's the Wheel, forging, scavenging, mechanics unique to certain MCs and a whole load of common mechanics.
It's basically /tg/ makes a JRPG, it's amazing, but not everyone can get into it because it's unique even in its series and really hard to get into it.

>>379386335
All character routes have some fun stuff, the only one that doesn't have any unique stuff in terms of mechanics is Judy's story, but she has some unique party members and it's the only MC in the game where you can play with her full family, so Joseph, Roy etc. which all appear in other stories, she also has access to many strong characters like Armand and starts with a Forbidden tablet, Judy's story is the best if you like to use magic.
Laura's quest is interesting because the narrative point of view isn't her, but Henry's, and she has one of the best personal boss and some unique equipment.
Ruby's the most important quest lore wise and she can use the Tetraforce freely unlike other characters.
Kurt has the Gauntlet, which forces you into some unique solo battles in real time, which is a good challenge, he has one of the more challenging scenarios in the game really.
Mythe can forge anything since he is a smith, he has some panels in his own story that nobody else can get, which is nice.
Armic has the toughest quest since he has to buy certain specific items in order to progress in his own quest, you'll meet many members of his race around the world with whom you can sell or barter items, and that's unique to his story.

They're all good really, it depends on how much you like the game.

Sorry to ask but new to the series and have a question. Getting into my first SMT game, soul hackers (tried SMT1 a few years ago but dropped it). I'm a few hours in and have to ask, is negotiation really just rng? I try to constantly talk to demons and it seems like pure chance they join. Sometimes they ask shit like if they could see my weapons which is bullshit as I know they will just run off with them. Is there some strategy to it I'm missing?

About 3 or so hours in, going to the astro museum to look for carol j after getting the doll for victor, liking it but not in love instantly like I am with some other jrpgs. Also yesterday someone told me to describe hitomi as "sexy" to get lighting magic and holy fuck, thanks. That shit is powerful, I almost feel bad using it.

>Shilled
Do you even know what that means?
>>
>>379388431
I think the actual luck stat influences negotiations in SH
Also "sexy" hitomi gets even better due to learning Almighty skills as well
>>
>>379388431
There is always an element of RNG. Typically there are personality types and how demons react depends on that type and also the demon itself. By playing the games a lot you learn the different personalities of demons which makes it a little easier to tell what they will do or how they will react.

I can't recall how much of that is true for Soul Hackers though since it's been ages since I played it. There's more RNG in some than in others. You just have to experiment and try to remember what different species and demons with similar speech patterns say in response.
>>
>>379388431
>>379388717
Soul Hacker Negotiations are reliant on a fuckton of factors, most of them are pretty out of your control, but some RNG is always there.
It depends on stuff like the moon phase, your alignment, what demon types you have with you at the moment, what your stats are, and there is even some arbitrary conditions like having a ton of money or magnetite on you.

I think Int and Luck both make negotiations all around easier too
