No arena, no story, basically it's just doing missions which can sometimes be 1v1. There's also analog stick controls iirc but I'm not a fan of that control method, personally.

If you can get past the early 3d graphics 1 is the best place to start desu.

The core gameplay is the same throughout the series but past that it varies. Some have a story with missions that you complete and some only have the arena or missions without a story. Like Forumla Front is arena only without a story and you are free to build whatever mech you want without money being a constraint.

It is a game designed in such a way it expects you to carry over a save from the previous game along with moeny and so on.
Otherwise you're left to the wolves with not enough money to build a design to pass all but one mission. And good luck figuring that out as a newbie.
