What MMOs have good grinding or even no grinding? What would MMOs play like without levels?

There is no such thing as good grinding.
>>
>>379366432
How so?
>>
Since everything is server-side with MMOs, you can't have sophisticated AI or other things that require computation. Hence the shitty gameplay, making levels necessary as the only meaningful way to progress in the game.

>levels necessary as the only meaningful way to progress in the game

>what is gear, crafting, and real-life skillfulness
How cool would a sandbox play without leveling? Everybody would find their niche in whatever they enjoy instead of being forced into half-classes. Sandboxes should provide gear through crafting and trading instead of linearity.

Also, if shooter MMOs have the netcode for 10 rounds per second, we can afford some high fantasy combos.
>>
>>379366147
Good grinding only exists if you LOVE the mechanics, and world of the game. Otherwise its a job you don't get paid for. Search around anon find an mmo you can love even if it isn't popular.
>>
>>379366147
Maybe it would be like Monster Hunter? Its hard to keep people interested without time sinks, which are typically grinding.
>>
>>379368107
It's mainly about PvP unless the game has NPCs constantly trying to pirate characters --

What is grinding, without danger?

What is crafting and upgrading, without loss? Korean games do this through RNG, but it should really be skill-based: "play well, keep your gear".
>>
>>379368776
I think a lot of older MMO's had equipment drop on death as a common mechanic, but new MMO's never do that because equipment can take so long to get, people would quit if the gear they took 5 months to get was lost.
>>
>>379368910
EVE has loot drop, and you can just buy ore on the market and craft it through blueprints.
>>
>>379367117
>real-life skillfulness
Nonexistant? There,s a reason one button rotation macros, bots and add-ons are so succesful. There is no meaningful skill in MMOs, the ceiling is about as low as it gets
>>
>>379366203
>runescape
>no grinding
What game did you play? Have you never maxed your agility? That's the most tedious grind in the world.

EVE has skillful gameplay. A lot of it is about out-flying the opponent a la Jets Online.
>>
There are no good MMOs yet
>>
>>379366147
Realm of mad god. Easy to max lvl, easy to get gear, but if you die - you start over again and loose all loot
>>
>>379369132
I don't think they even need to let you build your own settlements like eve, just have premade ones that when a guild occupies it, it becomes populated with various QoL NPCs, make PvE about harvesting resources(this includes murdering certain bosses/monsters) to repair and craft gear, then have two kinds of servers, a "cold war" server where wars and alliances are only conducted by the various player run guilds/clans and a cyclic server where the capitol cities can throw a wrench into player diplomacy by declaring war/peace/cease fire with each other.
>>
>>379369890
>start over and lose all loot
But that's not deep -- just punishing.
>>
>>379369994
AKA, other characters aren't out hunting for PvP, etc..

>>379369948
EVE settlements.. are just "make house and drop it in space", plus bonuses for activity in a zone.

I guess it would be like Guild Wars 1 where there was a lot of horizontal progression and the fun comes from figuring out builds that work. But even that had its problems.

>What is a sandbox?

The mechanics MMO's use have always been SHIT. virtual slot machine and perpetual grinding for grindings sake.

Has any one ever wondered how much operant conditioning effects you in real life when you have been playing grinding games for a long time?
