If Xbox is gonna do it, this would be the year. Surprise announce that Scalebound and Crackdown 3 are well in development and will come at this year and that they aren't shit. Don't even bring up anything Kinect, for the love of god. Scorpio needs to have a lower price than PS4 Pro and not be shit. If they can pull all of this off, then they've got a chance. If you're a fan of Japanese games then it's a snowball's chance in hell. Xbox has neither the reliable support nor the history to make that happen, Sony has straight up gloated about Japanese support for this E3, and Nintendo's actually got a system out with some promise this time around so it'll probably get something. If MS wants to drop a bomb like Scalebound being uncanceled or a third Jet Set game being exclusive then they might ruffle some feathers but short of that I can't see it happening, and it's not like multiplats will impress when PS4 gets them too. I honestly think the best cause of action would be for, funny enough, when you go into combat, the game turns into Pokken. Something like that but with a lot more depth in it, would have to do alot for every single pokemon, types, etc, there would still be that strategy that comes with turn based, you would just need to change your style up a little.

Pokemon purists would spit at the idea of changing the fighting formula, but I can assure you that using a pokken like combat system over a turn based will always feel better, no matter how much you hate pokken, actually controlling your pokemon you caught and moving them around is far, far superior then clicking on on ember

Comparing what I got in FF15, with what I got from Bravely Default, I'd rather turn-based stayed. Active combat games almost always get dumbed down to ensure accessibility to the casuals anyway. Part of the problem is the current "professional" Pokemon scene where the intricacies of the battle system are wholly rooted in it BEING turn-based to begin with. I'd say spinoffs like Pokken Tournament are about as far as Nintendo would be willing to go in terms of messing with Pokemon's structure as it is, lest they lose a gargantuan proportion of their playerbase.

Believe me, I've also wanted an active battle system in Pokemon ever since I watched the anime when I was a wee kid, but my gut tells me it won't have the long lasting fun/mechanical depth the current turn-based battle system has.

I really think you're over estimating how many people play Pokemon 'professionally' I think that is a small playerbase and nothing compared to the larger amount it would pull in if it went full pokken mode. I know /vp/ makes it seem like everybody and there grandmothers knows about all the stats and blabla side of Pokemon, but at the end of the day, most people just like do turn based etc and move on, that is exactly why Sun/moon is casualized harder then ever (as if pokemon needed to be casualized any more)

Forcing Pokken combat in a 3d game would upset that small group, but they would get over it, because you would learn how to play pokemon 3d battles 'professionally'

Nintendo/gamefreak need to grab pokemon by the ear and force it into the future, kicking and screaming, the 'hardcore' pokemon fans will see the light

Battles don;t bother me. it's something about the style they go with that bothers me. The series has changed in so many ways but I still feel like that every game since Gen IV has been the same game just slightly rearranged, right down to the character archetypes. And when they do add something it's terrible like Megas, "Interdimensional" Pokemon with jacked up stats that ruin the meta or Gen 1 pandering like Alolan forms.
