Previous years and tournaments you saw the same people in top 8 because they were good. That shows repetition based on they were good and after a while others got to their level and could manage to win.

The games still worked and the better player to use that system would win.

because it's shallow and stifles creativity. Not to mention that the balance patches can be drastic enough to make your character choice extremely volatile rather than reward character loyalty. Every season they just switch which 5 or 6 characters you see in tournament because they only let a handful of characters have consistent damage and confirms at once.

Not to mention that the game feels extremely random because of v-trigger cancels out of full screen nonsense, and every situation in neutral, offense, and defense only has one specific answer. Everything in SFV is a constant state of rock, paper, scissors no matter what character you play and that's why you see consistent results from certain players. Specifically ones that aren't afraid to take risks and go ham. Just compare Nuckledu's Guile in USF4 to Dieminion's. The latter's was much more clean and calculated in that game and got more consistent results as well. In SFV its the opposite because crazy players perform better on average.

All in all the problem with the game is that the characters are streamlined and homogenized to reward a very specific playstyle because of the simplicity they're striving for the game to have. Not that I liked USF4 either, but at least you saw varying players all performing well while having their signature playstyles and characters.

Tbh Wong sorta falls into the best characters. He picked Rufus before he was deemed good because he wanted a goofy rushdown so he could get away from Chun-Li, he waifus Storm, and he said he was maining Karin way before she was announced.

Maybe this is a good way to put it:
Two guys, A and B play a game.
They play Super turbo, guy A wins 80% of the time. Guy B can rob some wins with lucky dizzies and good reads.
They play third strike, guy A wins 60% of the time. Guy B can play more eccentric and have more comebacks.
They play SF4, guy A wins 90% of the time. Guy B just can't deal with Seth.
They play SFV: guy A wins 50% of the time. Guy B gets a lot more wins by winning the wakeup guess of throw or attack.

These numbers aren't supposed to b accurate, its just to show that different games have different levels of skill involved in determining winner. People are upset about punk winning because it almost seems fradulent, the game is too casual and doesn't reward the better player. Responses like "well if daigo was better he should have beat punk" doesn't really make sense because very few players have a 100% win rate, in any game. It just seems like punk is winning more often than his apparent skill level shows.

Personally I think he's real good at consistency and composure, he might not be the best but he has plot armor.

There are a few simple factors for the reason why results aren't very stable.
- Balance patches semi-frequently, sometimes with large changes
- A game that rewards setplay
- A game that doesn't punish defensive options heavily. Jumping in general just doesn't put you in THAT bad of a situation
- Base matchups matter more than in 4
- Input lag

So you have a game that's easier to play with the tradeoff being less ways to fake out or pressure your opponent. As gay as Focus and Parries are, they allowed for creative exploitation of their opponents. Because there are less options to get past opponents, character matchups and thus your bracket become super important.

All SFV proves is that removing options is a bad way to make a fighting game. GG has the right mentality in that it made the game slightly more accessible, but the game still has tons of options and thus character balance is far less of a factor over player skill.

1. Make pokes better as a whole
2. Improve hit/hurtboxes in general they're bad as fuck in SFV
3. Add 1-2 more defensive options.

All of these are musts because they're required for play style variety. SFV is a shit game because of input delay and how everyone plays each character the same fucking way.

In SF4 we had so much more variety love or hate it. People played characters far differently then one another. I cannot tell people apart in SFV besides who wins consistently by just having better reads at the end of the day.

All Balrogs look the same play style wise almost all Uriens do. Its just such a boring fucking game. I wish it was more defensive. First game in awhile where Bison does damage and has a super fun moveset and hes reduced to the same strike throw game everyone else is because its not worth being defensive.
