I'm new to the series and don't get the whole SMT vs Persona thing. Aren't they both pretty similar in a lot of ways, right down to using the same demons/personas?

That said, I kind of want to give older Persona games a try, or maybe some SMT games. How do Persona 2 IS/EP and the SNES SMTs hold up?

Some hardcore SMT fans reject modern Persona because it's too otaku-bait.

Some newer Persona similarly reject SMT because it's not otaku-bait enough.

In actuality both are extremely similar and usually have their sets of strengths and weaknesses. Both, for the most part, are worth playing, as is basically every other MT spin-off you can get your hands on. If you speak Japanese, you should definitely look into the obscure stuff too like NINE or if... Shit's basically all good but Rondo.
