I wouldn't say it removes "half" the gameplay, since the top screen gameplay is really fucking easy and not hugely diverse

but it definitely makes the theme of the whole game weaker, since the point is that you're suppose to be co-operating with your partner instead of just moving them to a pin

Both are shit.

Played both and loved both, but if you can try DS first and maybe Android later or right after it, music quality is way better and it looks way better overall.
Can't really go wrong with either honestly, i get why some people can't get into the DS controls
