i still haven't finished it, i really like the characters (besides zidane who is flat as a board) and the "learning abilities from equipment" mechanic is really cool
the story is so bland so far though (i got partway into disc 2), disc 1 just seemed like i was going to random places with no purpose and i haven't felt engaged at all by the plot
it doesn't help that the game is so goddamn slow, kinda reminds me of pokemon diamond in terms of sheer glacial pace
i do want to finish it eventually

I do appreciate the writing and the milieu, but this game is rough to go back and play.

The writing is actually fairly horrible even for a simple adventure.
By far the best part of the game is first two discs as it focuses on a huge, fairly comfy adventure. It's like first Grandia in this sense, with wonderful locations, nice music and cute characters. When game decides to actually kickstart the story on third disc, it ends with a big wet fart because Kuja is a terrible antagonist, Garland is painfully boring and Necron is something straight from FF4 judging by the level of retardation.
Plus virtually half of the cast is given practically no motivation to stick with the party at all, Amarant being the worst case.

Yeah battles are much slower than in 7 and 8. Field map screens load times feel fast, in 8 they feel so slow. But only played PAL versions myself. FF8 isn't either properly done for PAL, in-game minute is 50 seconds but that game doesn't have anything like Excalibur 2.

Game has at least my favorite vidya character.
