Fighting doesn't have to mean a huge battle or fist fight. I imagine it being like you keeping a burglar out. If you didn't push on the other side of the door the burglar would enter. It's not a fight but it can still be exhausting and is a power struggle.

He could probably destroy the pillars if Zelda hadn't kept him in check. But If I remember correctly, those pillars had to do with the guardians and not Ganon. Could be wrong though. Also Ganon wanted to take over Hyrule. Makes no real sense in leaving it.
