One of the last good things to come out of Bioware, between this and Mass Effect 2. Personally enjoyed this more, REALLY had fun with the differing origin stories and character building. Does a better job of making your choices feel like they have real consequence in a single game than Mass Effect did in three.

Only shit I dislike is the huge amount of DLC that had to be attached to it, between the Warden's Keep, the Shale thing, Return to Ostagar, and then all of Awakening, and then the retardedly difficult Flesh golem thing and the Morrigan DLC I find it exhausting to replay it 100% multiple times.

That said I have never actually played it WITHOUT all the DLC, would any other Anons comment that the base game by itself is perfectly fine or do any of the DLC really make it for you?

We were nearing the end of active work on design content for Dragon Age... there was still a lot more bug fixing/polishing/ and fill-content generation ahead but the core plot/writing and level design was finished. My work was rapidly shifting into that of reviewing what the team had put together.

Discussion on Dragon Age 2 began around this time and looking ahead I knew that I wasn't going to be satisfied with what Dragon Age 2 would be. Party control/tactical combat are huge factors in my enjoyment of a role-playing game as is adopting the role of the hero (i.e., customizing my character). I was fairly certain Dragon Age would transition towards more of a Mass Effect experience, which while enjoyable is not the type of role-playing game I play. Could I be the lead designer on such a title? Certainly... though if I were going to work on a game adopting a set-in-stone protagonist I'd rather work on something lighter, like a shooter.

Through a series of circumstances it was decided that with my not wanting to participate on Dragon Age 2 it was time to transition in a new lead to finish the Dragon Age console versions and ramp up for Dragon Age 2. I moved out of an active lead role though I stayed on for several months performing quality assurance and helping with the transition. I completed the game several times during this period and racked up the second or third highest bug totals... so, still busy but doing something quite different.

After this was over and the content locked down I took a sabbatical. When I returned to work I was hoping that there would be a new project lined up for me.

There wasn't, not really. I did some high level design for a potential new project but a few months later I realized that, given cutbacks and other things that it really seemed unlikely that the project I had been 'assigned' to was ever going to materialize. I can't/won't go into any other details other than to point to an old entry I made about this and reiterate: "I'm not the same person I was when I started, and BioWare isn't the same company. "

So I quit, giving a couple months notice to finish up my obligations on the new/hypothetical project and then in early September 2009 I left BioWare.

Great game. Triggered toddposters and CRPG purists are the only ones who dislike it.

Daily reminder. It has an expansion pack. It's great, arguably better than Origins base game in some areas. It's the last bit of good Bioware content that was ever made to boot.

Really boring, mediocre RPG. Combat is like a point and click adventure game. Story is a by the numbers yawn fest. Awful graphics and art style even for 2009. Can't be arsed trying again/10.

Like I said, I couldn't bring myself to finish DA3, but I am curious: how big a role do DA1 characters and the original Warden play in it? I don't care for most of Inquisition's companions (never got to Dorian and never saw anything special about Solas, Cassandra was fucking pure waifu material though but not enough to keep me invested), but DA:O's companions were part of what made the game for me. Do Morrigan/Leliana/Alistair at least get justice, those were the big three.

The Warden is in it (in terms of sending a letter and you meeting his family), and if you romanced Morrigan she is confirmed for actual best girl (so as a Morriganfag, that was nice). Leliana is a main character, and so is Morrigan later in the game.

Inquisition used a lot of DA:O shit, and it's a big reason anyone gave a shit about it.

I still love it. And it hurts me so much. I honestly thought it was going to be a milestone for future rpgs, the first step down a path to greatness.
Don't get me wrong, it had many flaws, I'm not denying that. But it was a decent first step.
A next gen improvement of old-style rpgs, a bit simplistic, true, but if the sequels could make the gameplay deeper and more detailed, branch choices even more and so on, we could be on the way to something spectacular.
It filled me with so much hope.
And of course, we all saw where it went. Instead of focusing on the good stuff and improving the bad, they fucked the good ones, kept the bad ones and added a ton of shitty ones.
Which is why the ME (which I'm not that into, but from what I've seen around here and other places) and DA experiences are so different.
In ME you have a mostly ok game, with ups and downs in the sequels that until the later parts of the final game -not counting Andromeda, obviously- where you explode in rage, as you get a big FUCK YOU AUDIENCE from Eaware.
In DA, you gradually see everything falling lower and lower, every step of the way, consistently getting further and further from the original charm, making what you have inside you at the end, be not seething rage but bile. Bile and contempt.

Honestly the only dlc really worth doing is awakening because it continues the story.

Warden's keep and Return to Ostagar are okay but really their purpose is for extra unnecessary items so they are easily skippable, the Golems of whatever dlc with the hard boss is nothing special either.

Morrigan dlc creates more questions than answers so not really worth doing and Leliana's song is good if you like Leliana but doesn't add much to the story either.

Shale is cool and unique gameplay wise but I think Alistair, Morrigan and Leliana are the best party members.

solas created the veil, before that the fade and the world were the combined reality of the "world".
he was one of the evanuri (elder "gods" of the elves). they weren't really gods, just the most powerful of their kind. they were huge powertripping cunts and they killed the most kind one of them, mythal, who was very close with solas. so he tore it all open and imprisoned those morons forever.
corypheus' orb was actually solas', he gave it to him because he was weak when he awoke so he would activate it, but he didn't anticipate that corypheus had found immortality, the plan was that corypheus would die when using it and solas would be able to close the veil again.
which is exactly his plan now, but the orb is destroyed. he admits that what he did was a mistake, and now wants to find a way to combine the worlds again, but tells the inquisitor this will definitely destroy the known to them world. and he has plans to fuck up the evanuri once he combines the fade and thedas, but we don't know them, because he leaves on his quest.
there's a cliffhanger about finding new allies because solas has spies everywhere and he has got to know everybody in the inqusition, so we'll be going there to find people he doesn't know

It's not for revenge. The Evanuris dying is just the secondary plan that is necessary. Main goal is restoring the former elves. He considers everyone currently alive to be "tranquil" in his eyes, and nobody alive can ever reach the potential of ancient elves. Splitting the world was the biggest mistake of his life because he doomed everyone else, not just the Evanuris cunts. And in his eyes this must be fixed even at the cost of everyone else on Thedas dying. His people are more important than anything.

It's not really for revenge, per se, but more that he realized he essentially committed what's close to an eventual genocide of spirits and a completely corrupt system of power that is leading to time and space being ripped apart in either sides race to conquer the other in the mage-templar war.

It won't slaughter everyone in the waking world, just a lot of people. He sees it as a means to restoring what once was since both worlds are inherently corrupt and rotting. Metaphorically, him amputating the inquisitor is similar to what will happen to the world in order to 'fix' it.

It's the classic "drown one boat to save the other" moral dilemma in his eyes, and he's taking the path that will lead to the least deaths possible

Honestly while DA2 is infuriating because your companions are catty cunts who won't stop fighting, the whole series is pretty decent and /v/ complaints grossly exaggerated. Combat itself only gets better and more fun unless you prefer fiddling with the tactics screen. The bosses especially are really well done, especially compared to the ME series.

Of course there's always that BIOWARE QUALITY but that comes with the territory of playing any Bioware game. Give it a shot, see if you like it. They're free if you pirate.

Vivienne is an ice-cold bitch that's savage as fuck, Sera has her heart in the right place but is ignorant like the general masses of Thedas. The party banter between Viv and Sera is always fantastic.

Alistair's a great tank and has a dry sense of humor. Merrill is naive but adorable and the best overall mage companion in DA2 without question.

I think you missed the whole "I feel so inadequate that I am trying to suicide-by-cop and cover up my crippling existentialist world view and lack of control over my life by whoring myself out to the highest bidder" part of his personality. Once you give him something to fight for he's arguably the most loyal and reliable friend to the Warden. Blackwall is about mid tier, I'd say.

Vivienne is an uncle tom mage who has the personality of a plank of wood, Sera is dumb as a stump and doesn't have her heart in the right place at all.

Alistair is fine, just not that high tier. And being the best mage companion in DA2 is a really low bar to set

Well, on less than nightmare, just wearing massive armor generates +20 threat at fight start, but obviously no one plays on anything but nightmare.

This is why you always pair Arcane Warrior with Blood mage. Blood boil alone is 150+ threat in a 15m AOE. As a reference, warriors taunt, buffed with the threat modal is 300+ threat. DPSing an enemy from 100-0 is 100+ threat.

Then attacking skills like fireball (30+ threat), all the cones (15+ threat), and hexes (5-25 threat) are more than enough.

The main issue is that with AW/BM you'd very likely wind up as tank (though you could just be a mediocre dps). This means that you drop alistair from the party, and for me Alistair kicking darkspawn dick in his brother's armor (King Cailain's armor from the Ostagar dlc) is really neat.

The best party comp is 2h warrior PC, Ali tank, Morrigan with hexes, buff modals, and eventually an off heal, and finally, Wynne as healer+haste carrier.

Ali is a great tank, especially because he has the templar final skill of instamurdering mages anywhere on the map. Morrigan is there mostly for bants, she never really did anything useful (except early game, spider form isn't atrocious and can kite low level enemies), wynne is GOAT. Heal, regen, AOE spirit healer heal + vessel of the spirit mean you just don't die.

Finally as a 2h warrior, you have very reliable dps thanks to indomitable which makes you immune to cc, and with things like sunder armor and killing blow, you're really good at making things blow up. The champion knockdown and party rally are pretty sweet (more RP wise than anything), and the berserker passives are good to just have in the background.

I wish there are other games that lent themselves to this kind of party/theory crafting.

Not a moralfag, no, but to take another character I think is similar, the hound from GoT consistently says he loves killing. There's a difference between being a true sadist and making the most of your situation. But is he a moralfag? Fuck no, he outright says in several situations that killing someone might be the quickest and easiest option. That doesn't mean that's all there is to that particular part of his character.

Morrigan does something similar by saying how she loves to be alone and trick people who try to be kind to her, yadda yadda, when it's very apparent that she desired a friend and didn't realize it.
