I will say that Automata used the OST much better than Nier did. The dynamic soundtrack was amazing, and really helped set the mood. Nier's soundtrack, while excellent, overused tracks alot especially Emil's Sacrifice, which lost a lot of its weight by the third time hearing it.

Its true that both soundtracks are quite different, but I believe Automata is better through its allocation of three unique singers and calm/medium/dynamic versions of each song.
Production is much better. For example, I could listen to radiant light all throughout the game compared to getting sort of annoyed at hearing hills of radiant winds so much.

Even without side materials there's a whole shitload of implied stuff that is really easy to miss if you're not the kind of a person who notices little details or pays attention to weapon stories. All side materials did is confirming the most popular theories, the only twist that surprised me was the whole Zinnia/Number 9 deal which cemented 9S as Nier of Automata given that he even had his own Shadowlord in some sense.

Zinnia is the one who created YoRHa android line and the idea of fake human server on the moon to boost the morale of androids who were utterly losing in the war. But he saw that his plan wasn't ideal so he shelved it.

Number 9 is initial prototype of 9S who found out that they were made from machine cores, went utterly mad, corrupted his plan into YoRHa we see in the game then murdered the entire satellite base.

9S has a cool custom AI as he jump around like a crazy monkey on steroids spamming his Pod like a complete madman and disabling your systems with hacking. A2 has that crazy minigame that ends with 9S literally breaking her OS and corrupting her item screens. But if you're overleveled you can literally destroy both of them with a few A2 attacks or a single spear 9S throw.
