This is the one thing I hate about the end of last gen. The consoles got smaller and quieter but the build quality suffered. The Xbox 360 E and PS3 Super Slim both feel pretty cheap, but it's really just a means of pushing them as streaming boxes that play games.

Also the SS is a top-loader, and if you're not careful with the cover you will probably break it or mess it up

My roommate works for GAMESTOP and they still have "a good amount" of them as well as a lot of Xbox 360s (but since they're the 4GB model they don't sell as fast).

You can also usually get them pretty easily off Amazon for some time after they're discontinued due to warehouses discovering additional orders they need to liquidate

I dont expect these things to work forever, and I dont want to hunt for one 10 years from now when itll probably be 'retro' and expensive again.

Already got 2 ps3s, 2 modded original xboxs, 2 modern 360s. Working on a backup Wii U as well.

If it has games that cant be emulated, then ill get a backup console.

Nah we lost a lot from the early years of film 1898-1907 but everything that has been commercially produced from 1907 onwards has been "saved" almost completely. Gaming is hardly getting any government funding and is not deemed culturally important still so I don't think it's hard to imagine that some consoles will cost a lot or you will only be able to play certain Top 10 ported releases.

Now that it's been a decade, the PS3 does have games. For real though the PS3 redesigns highlight everything that was wrong with the original PS3 as well as the 360

We've been doing a mostly fine job making emulators without any sort of government agency. Unlike an old film, which may only have a couple copies, video games are printed by the thousands, tens of thousands, even millions. Someone just needs to get a copy and rip the iso, or dump the rom, or whatever, and then anybody can figure out the emulation part down the road.
