I beat the Spider boss that was mission three, took me almost seven tries but I'm stuck at the encounter where you put the Pride of Lion in the statue at the room with the fountain and you have to fight the black thing that shoots spikes out.
I beat God Hand and vanilla DMC3 a few months ago pretty smoothly but I am getting absolutely destroyed in this game.

This might be a big reason why I was able to do God Hand and DMC3 a lot more smoothly, I was used to being able to cancel out of anything but in this game once you commit you have to follow through.
The camera is pretty awful though.

It's not that the game is intentionally hard, it's just that there are some awkward design choices stemming from it splintering out of a Resident Evil project. From inception, it wasn't even close to what it was and gradually morphed into the action game it turned out to be, but some curious remnants from it's original blueprint remain and make it less natural to play whereas DMC3 took what DMC1 was and finetuned all the aspects of the game.

I just recently bought a ps2 controller to replay all my classics, and quickly found myself getting my ass kicked in the normal and easy difficulties, as where my 14-15 year old self used to play on max difficulty. The skill caps for games these days, save for things like Dark Souls, just pales in comparison to current gen. Old Gundam games were hard as shit. DmC 1 hard as fuck.

All guns doesn't really fly in DMC2 DMD, enemies will just Devil Trigger and you will have your shit pushed in. There guns become mostly for the usual juggling and linking together your style meter between melee encounters so you can keep it going and not have it fade away.

The only enemy in DMC3 that even comes close to being a threat are Lusts and that is purely because of Lustercut. There is a reason why people like DMC1/Ninja Gaiden/Bayonetta. They may not offer the same combo freedom as DMC3/4 but the enemies are much better, and fun enemies can add a lot to a game. Just look at Bayonetta, literally no enemy in DMC3/4 comes close to Grace and Glory in terms of intensity and enjoyment of combat.

I don't agree at all, almost every encounter is diversified with Lusts and Sloths to make sure you're not only fighting cannon fodder Prides, and even in numbers Prides can land a hit on you.

And I really don't know what you mean by "so many tools to get out of any tricky situation", in DMC1 a lot of attacks become easily avoided when you master the i-frames on the jump.

Lusts move around a lot but hardly attack, sloths are practically harmless. You can get hit but only if you're being stupid/impatient. There's no feeling of enemies actively chasing you out to fuck you in the ass with the only exception being the hell vanguards who are very predictable. You attribute a level of aggressiveness to DMC1's enemies that simply isn't there for most of them. The only really standout I remember is Shadows.

DMC1's enemies are closer to DMC3 than they are to Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden. Hell people like to bring up Grace and Glory in Bayonetta but the fact is most enemies telegraph their attacks with a shimmer pretty well in advance in that game.

The levels and story suck ass in Bayonetta though, to the point that it actually hurts the game significantly. Which I previously would have thought impossible in this genre until I played this game.

I'm not asking for Shakespearean dialogue here, but at least contextualize why I'm fighting and where I am in a somewhat understandable fashion. Ninja Gaiden's story is mostly pure ass but at least I feel a sense of progression and sort of understand what's happening. In Bayonetta, fucking anything goes. Not only is there a LOT of story and exposition in Bayonetta, it's so poorly written that it basically turns into pure nonsense. The game has this "DUDE ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN" attitude that also carries over into the level design. There's zero rhyme or reason to the game and it will just throw you from one ridiculous scenario into the next, to the point that you lose any grip on what's happening and you just stop caring.

I think Bayonetta's campaign is straight up bad, it completely disregards the concept of setup and payoff; which is the bread and butter of any story, even if said story is just pure gameplay and level design.
