GB Micro + Flashcart is an awesome handheld gaming setup. Games that use the triggers are a bit tougher, but I still managed to get through Mega Man Zero 1-4 on it, and I had never played those games before.

Since the two best games have been mentioned (Mother 3 and Astroboy) I'll get some underrated games.

Scurge Hive: basically a isometric metroid game. Very good graphics and sound. Has a ds port.

Nah, golden sun is genuinely patrician.
It's not hard to shit on Camelot for its reliance on archetype and yuge text walls, but its the best type of archetype. From a design perspective the battle system was genuinely class and mechanics grabbed your attention so

It's the same mash A/spam your strongest attacks bullshit as the rest of the bottom of the barrel JRPGs. Hell, your PP regenerates just by walking around so it's even shallower.

>It still stands out from every other weeb bait franchise.
Even shit like Tales is better because those abortive anime characters still have more personality than the Golden Sun cast.

Worthless changes. You'll play it once and get bored. Then years later you'll replay the SNES version and go "fuuudge, what did I do?" Trust me on this one. The smaller resolution and millennial font isn't worth the charm it lost in porting over. This is the real reason people complain about Link's voice. It's because it's unnecessary and ruins the atmosphere.

I love my GBA
It's one of those systems where you can just pick up any game and you get decent satisfaction out of it, even the fuckign licensed games.
People underestimate just how many games this little bad boy has. And since it had the SNES ports of the best it had a great library from the start.
Also, fuck the SP

>>

>>
>>379304690

Because the DS Lite has fucking terrible buttons.
>>
>>379295029
Emulate and speed up, dongus.
>>
>>379304371
I'm starting from the perspective that all JRPGs are ass, with game design as interesting as drywall.
The system in golden sun had a flashy arcad-y bent, and the djinn swapping and psytricks or whatever are more interesting than anything in say, FF1-6.
>Even shit like Tales is better because those abortive anime characters still have more personality than the Golden Sun cast.
It's irrelevant because every anime plot ever is just corny nonsense, golden sun remains palatable in that it didn't just go full edgelord.

As far as rpgs on the gba go its gotta be near the top. the only ones that come close would be ports like the shining games or phantasy star or the ys series, maybe sword of mana for its combat system.

Did Advance Wars have proper missions or a story mode?
I own a copy that my friend gave me, but the only thing I can play are tutorial-like missions, and there are something like 30 of them. They're so long-winded too.

I just want to play the game that everyone says is great, but I don't want to go through eight hours of forced tutorials. Old FE and FFT never had this shit.
>>
>>379304753

Agreed. This system was like the SNES got another generation of games for it. There were so many great games, and even the low budget shovelware was better than what most consoles get.
>>
>>379304753
except the SNES was better system than GBA and all the ports were downgrades.

YAASS, even got a screenshot of the J version, so poison n roxy are in it
>>
>>379306040

I like to play on the actual hardware, not on a phone or pc, and my flashcart can't speed the game up.

>>379308316

Even if I never played the first two?

>>379308813

Yeah, it has a proper campaign. You just have to get through the tutorial shit first. After that, there are minimal interruptions in missions, and the text is mostly just before and after.
>>
>>379310264
Yeah but the rub is the GBA also got genesis ports (and wonderswan), feels like the only stuff that is missing is maybe chrono trigger and the streets of rage games.
The shit even got another donkey kong country

I recently played all three Mother games back-to-back because I was concerned that I would be missing out on important plot elements.
I can say without a doubt that you can play any of them in whichever order you wish. None of them 'continue' the plot of the others in a traditional sense. They all follow a different cast of characters in different times and locations.
You won't understand the motives of the main villain in Earthbound if you don't play Mother, and similarly so in Mother 3 if you haven't played Earthbound, but everything else is self-contained.
The connection between Earthbound and Mother 3 is the most significant, so you can skip the first Mother if it's too old for your taste.
Don't let others convince you that the first one is not worth playing at all. In many ways, it's one of my favorite games in the series because of how charming it can get. If you end up playing one of the Mother games and liking it, try out the others, but don't feel that you HAVE to play them in any order to have an understanding of what's happening.

>Yeah, it has a proper campaign. You just have to get through the tutorial shit first.
Thanks for the info. I'll try to power through them. At least I can see from the tutorials that the game has some depth to it.

I really, REALLY recommend softmodding a N3DS and using the best GBA emulator (which I forget the name), it's so good. Fuck.

Sounds great. I'll give the first one a shot, and if it isn't my thing, I'll move on. Thanks.
>>
>>379312630

tfw I have about 20 different 3DS systems, and ALL of them have too high of a firmware to mod, except the one I gave away to my little brother.
>>
>>379312810
Look up Tomato's modded rom of the GBA port. It's the definitive way to play the game, including a better translation, and you get the Easy Ring at the start which gives the option to get more experience from enemies and reduce encounter rates. From experience, it's even better than the official Earthbound Beginnings release for the Wii U.
If you must play it on the GBA hardware, your next best option is to buy the Mother 1+2 cartridge on eBay for around $15 CAD. It comes with Mother 1 fully translated. If you go this route, don't touch Mother 2 on the cartridge--it's buggier than the SNES release and I believe it's not even fully translated past the beginning of the game.

It really is a lovely series. I hope you have fun, Anon.

That was my shit back in the day. Probably put more time into that than anything else on my GBA back in Middle School.

>>379312810
Remember that the first one is a game from the late 80s. There's no shame in peeking at a guide if you need to. There are a few less than obvious objectives.

Original guy here.

Mother 1 can be pretty rough if you are not used to similar 80's jrpgs. It can be quite difficult if you don't grind and pretty cryptic, it isn't really linear. Earthbound is much easier and linear, its easier to play in general. All three games are worth playing but M1 can be a bit rough for a newer player. Also I suggest playing Earthbound before Mother 3 as while they're all seperate Mother 3 has a plot point that is from Earthbound.

Well not without a prior entry point already made. Unless you had made a entry point on 11.3 or older for 11.4 you're fucked. Old 3ds on 11.4 can't do soundhax sadly.

The nes version of Tomato's translation is pretty choppy. The nes version has a smaller character limit meaning lines were cut down. For example, "Redneck" is still "Wally". The gba version had a much better character limit, it's why Tomato choose to translate that version.
>>
>>379313895
>But that's wrong
Except it isn't. I have both the Mother 1+2 and Mother 3 cartridges in my collection right now. The only game that isn't translated is the Mother 2 portion of Mother 1+2, like I said.

My current collection includes: Tactics Ogre, four Mega Man Zero titles, Yoshi's Island, Gradius Advance, two Klonoa games, and the two Fire Emblem titles. I also have Final Fantasy IV and Harvest Moon, although I'm a bit less inclined to recommending them.

>>379289683
>>379289778
Cima: The Enemy was a strange one. You very much need to get used to how combat works, because if not, you will get absolutely murdered by the bosses. Other than that, it involves finding lost characters on a map and guiding them to the exit. You can also send some characters to pick up supplies along the way, including the young ones to go to areas you can't visit yourself. You can end up sacrificing characters if you want (and suck at the game). Everyone has a morale and so helping characters, especially killing enemies near characters, will up their morale. Letting allies get hurt lowers it.

Other games have done the idea better since then, although it's not a bad attempt on the GBA.

>>379291080
Starfy is easily one of my favorite DS games.

Well sorry then myself, hard to tell tone from text alone. The old 3ds can't use soundhax on 11.4 but from my understanding it works perfectly on the new 3ds. Soundhax is easy to use to, just look up a guide and you should be good to go.

Unfortunately nobody bothered translating them because the SNES versions already were translated. The iOS version of SMT1 is a fully translated port of the GBA version, but there is still no way to play translated on a GBA.
