The fun part for me was exploring the digi-world and fighting random digimons. Also, the arena was nice and I liked interacting with the other humans in the game.

Having to grind in the training room with those mini-games just killed the game for me.

Next Order got an official English translation. And it's vastly superior. It's closer to the PS1 Digimon World but superior in everyway.

It's got raising Digimon, exploring a very sizeable world to recruit Digimon to your town. These Digimon actually add new buildings/facilities to the town.
It's one of the very few games that is a true sequel. It took the previous games formula and just made everything better.

Because you spend two hours in a gym savescumming only to get an hour or even less to actually run around with your Digimon unlike the original Digimon World. It was awful tedium compared to the first game since you could at least progress there without a Perfect.

I'm on Chapter 3 of Cyber Sleuth and it's my first Digimon, do I wait for a Digimon to reach its max level to evolve or should I just evolve it as soon as their evolution I want is available?

Evolving in Digimon is extremely malleable. You will want to do it as much as possible to gain new skills and stuff.
There's a benefit to waiting, I don't exactly remember what it is, but basically, digivolve whenever you feel like it.

I think the overlevel benefit stops at a certain points so waiting to max is a waste.
