Lots of easy irrelevant content as you blast your way through to cap level which is where content matters.
At cap, mediocre to good content with glaring flaws which might or not kill the enjoyment in the game for you. If you stick it out, it's still an alright game to spend some time in every day. Find someone to play with.

It'd be better to just go play for free on one of the vanilla or tbc private servers.
A lot of stuff has improved over the years, but the core game was much better then.

The "base game" is the Battle Chest which includes every previous expansion except the latest, Legion. You can buy that for like $15 and play the entire way until Legion. You still pay the sub, which the battle chest includes too (you don't pay the first one).
There's no restrictions if you buy the battle chest, you can party with Legion players, you can chat, mail, use AH, join guilds, the lot. There's also a F2P version up to level 20 iirc, with none of that, of course.

Vanilla is the base game.
He means you should spend half a year levelling up on a poorly coded private server that will get shut down halfway through.
Retail is Blizz' own servers.

I'm enjoying it more than WoD. Not sure how much that says, but fuck it, I play WoW in spurts.

OK so vanilla WoW is basically the base game as it was back in 2004, and you might even consider the first 2 expansions to be part of vanilla, too.

Then the third expansion, Cataclysm, changed the entire base game. Environments get destroyed because some big dragon wakes up and wreaks havoc. They use it as an opportunity to advance the sub-plot in each zone of the game.

Retail refers to the WoW actually being sold by Blizzard. Vanilla usually refers to private servers running original WoW pre-Cata.

The story isn't too amazing, especially when compared to Warcraft 3, but it's still nice to play through Vanilla to see what's changed. Post Cata zones can be really boring because they dumbed down the difficulty since Vanilla, so getting to see the aub-plot progress goes a great way towards not falling asleep while you level up to 50.

If you can find a guild with people you like, and you can find your level with raiding, then it's still worth it, otherwise avoid it like the fucking plague. I don't know how anyone can enjoy WoW casually doing just LFR, world quests and relying on the premade tool for group content.

Is it too late to get into raiding? Are others too far ahead with the grind?

I don't think i can play casually anymore, last time i raided seriously was in MoP, after that i tried to play alone when my guild broke, but it didn't felt like it was worth it.
