I feel like they didn't even attempt a story and went real hard with the gameplay mechanics and the open world, neither of which were very impressive. Like frankly in my playtime with it the game did more to annoy me than it did to impress or entertain me. It's super flawed in my opinion. That said if I was younger and could endlessly grind it with the slight character progression the game actually rewards you with it'd probably be my GoaT.

If they rounded it out into an actual RPG it'd actually rate higher, but being a fairly linear objective based game with no actual end doesn't really hold a high appeal for me since it reeks of intrinsic and repetitive boredom with little or no reprieve.

This reminds me of when I played Zelda II endlessly as a kid. All the time, all day, every day.
And beat it. Before I had even learned how to read properly.

I just systematically visited every square in the entire game. Spoke with every NPC. Visited every square in the game again. And spoke with every NPC again. And repeated it until I made progress. Until I eventually beat the game.

I still love Zelda II. It's a surprisingly good action game even to this day I'd argue. And the world as simplistic as it may be, still manages to present a sense of scale.

Can someone explain to me why people would gladly visit countless caves that all look the same in A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time or whatever, only to get a few rupees, bombs, and or arrows. And only occasionally a heart piece of you were very lucky.

Dungeons were always an overgrown compromise born out of technical limitations. Imagine integrating all the dungeons from LoZ into the overworld. It'd be a nightmare to navigate because you can only see one map screen at a time.
BotW took what was useful and ditched the rest. The connected puzzle rooms are now spread out to serve as a quick break from the exploration gameplay loop, and the spatial reasoning puzzles were concentrated into solid 30 minute experiences.

Caves were great because they were a natural part of the world with no set item inside them. This makes them way more fun than shrines by default.

Dungeons don't need to be long but they serve as a thematic end point of a certain area of the overworld. It's that feeling of being in the deepest, densest and most dangerous part of a location that made them superb. That was lacking in BotW.

The game would have been a 10/10 if it had a caves, around 30 shrines and about 8 short dungeons.

I love this game and my favorite zelda is alttp because of exactly that. 13 fucking dungeons, the later ones you can play in many different ways.

I loved the sense of atmosphere and getting lost in a labyrinth with puzzles around every corner and never knowing if a group of tough enemies would be beyond the next door.

BotW is fantastic. I hate all 3D zeldas besides OoT, MM is fine since it is its own game but still ehh compared to the classic formula. I love the sense of exploration in a vast unkown world with puzzles around every corner. A world with tons of encounters and never knowing just how tough the next one might be. A world that has tons of atmosphere and sweet spots to find.

To me BotW is the only 3D zelda that compares to alttp. The dungeons arent suppose to be the draw, thats why all the puzzles were given to korks and left as more physics and movement oriented affairs besides nabooris. Shit you even turn a dungeon on its side much like how you alter the rooms in the forest temple.

My 2 favorite zeldas are the best of their kind. One a focused albeit formulaic at this point adventure game, and the other a true open world.

When I was halfway through my game I was never breaking gear because it was all soldier or above and eventually royal. Almost every battle, about 80%, would end in my throwing away my unbroken yet worn out weapon for a new better one.

Only lizal shit breaks quickly at that point and thats because you are getting high tier base damage very early, compared to other weapons.

Shit it got to the point where I would stock up about 3-5 weapons that were about to break just for combat purposes. Basically free ranged attacks with tons of impact

I don't know about that. I visited the cave west of Sapphia's Table in the Gerudo region countless of times during my playthrough. For its Edge of Duality and assorted Gerudo gear.
I was very happy to have found it. And of course, there are tons of places all throughout Hyrule I kept revisiting that I was happy to have found. This just happens to be one of my favourites.

And there is no need to twist my words or anything. Because for as much as I like the fact that I found it and revisited many times. It's not as if I ever "needed" to do it. I just chose to do it. Because it's awesome.
