What would have happened if the N64 used CDs? Would the PlayStation have become as popular as it did?
>>
the N64 would've been too expensive for its target audience for a long time.
>>

it would've retailed for at least $350 at launch.
>>
The competition would've been more even. Newer devs would go to Sony while established devs would've stuck primarily with Nintendo.
>>
a lot more multiplats.

It's hard to gauge this since two of the main draws of the N64 was better load times and better graphics; all thanks to the cartridges. Had it been CD based it probably would've looked the same as the PS1 and got FF7 but that's about it.
>>
>>379255940
cartridges didn't affect graphics at all.
>>
N64 would've had higher res textures and cleaner audio since they could fit.

>better graphics; all thanks to the cartridges

The hardware is why the N64 had SOME better graphics. It's was simply more powerful and capable hardware.

Doubtful. The main problem 3rd parties had with N64 was Nintendo's tight control on cartridges. They probably would want the same for their CDs had they used them
>>
Considering Sony basically invented them, it would have been impossible. Kind of like blu-rays today.
>>

Sony didn't invent them. They joined Phillips to license the technology from an American company and then develop the digital audio standard. Bluray, again, is not so much a technology invented as a standard defined. HD-DVD was literally the exact same technology as bluray, just a different standard.
>>

I said basically. When you and one other company are the only ones in the world developing something, you kind of have a choke on the market for it.
>>
>>379258476
they could've created proprietary discs like Sega did. It still would've been way cheaper than using transistors and internal batteries.

And since the N64 had higher bandwidth the loading times would've been way quicker than the PS1's too.
>>
>>379258089
It also couldn't into textures well or direct access memory so a CD having more storage even as a regular CD wouldn't help as it couldn't load enough quickly for it to matter as well.
>>
>>379258920
4kb texture buffer, would be so slow to load a PS1 style game it would be a room at the time or you'ld still be waiting on it to load the decor.
>>
>>379254178
it would have been great
